What is the BEST Battletoads game?

There are a surprisingly quite a few Battletoads games out there. And while Battletoads for the NES is the proverbial classic, its really not a great game. For a variety of reasons. Mostly because while its Beat'em Up segments are great, they are separated by some seriously obnoxious sections.

So out of all the games that bare the Battletoads branding, which do you think the best?

I lke the original. And because the Genesis version has the better graphics and sound of the two - and identical controls I will have to vote for that version.

My vote is for the Arcade version but that opinion is skewed because it's the only version I ever put any significant amount of time into. I never was a big fan of the Battletoads brand when it first came out and only very briefly played the NES version. I've never played the Genesis port, Battlemaniacs on SNES, the portable versions, or any of the Battletoads/Double Dragon releases. My first experience with the arcade version was through MAME but luckily for me and other people in my area, there's a mom n' pop retro store that has the original arcade cabinet to play on. :)

I completely agree with Oldskool.

The Genesis version is the definitive version of the Nes original. Better graphics, better music, perfect controls and it doesn't seem quite as nail bitingly tough.

The arcade version is REALLY good, but its a completely different game, and when I think of Battletoads I think of the original console versions.

I've only played the NES version. Honestly, before I got back into retro gaming two or so years ago, I never knew there were any Battletoads games apart from the NES one.

The arcade game is the definitive Battletoads experience. I was fortunate to play it back when it was in the arcades. Best graphics, violence, and sound out of any Battletoads game.

For me it's the Genesis port. Better graphics (though missing a few animations), sound, and difficulty level compared to the NES version. The Game Gear port is pretty bad, and the Game Boy version is terrible. You left off Amiga, but the less said of that one the better. I like Battletoads Double Dragon too, for the most part, but the Asteroids-style stage just kills the game for me. Battlemaniacs is pretty bad, it feels tired and it's kind of boring. The arcade version is alright, but I found it way overrated. You also left off the Game Boy exclusive game, but it's no loss.

I voted for Battlemaniacs. I played the hell out of the original NES game and loved it (even though it ruined me) and Battlemaniacs really felt like a true sequel; Similar gameplay with new levels, same brutally difficult but rewarding gameplay, and bigger and better graphics and sound.

Also, I'm pretty sure there's a 3rd GB title that wasn't included in the poll.

I'm gonna go with Arcade, that's one franchise that IMO never took well to home consoles. The SNES version of Battle Toads Double Dragon is pretty good, but the asteroids level just ruins the game.

At the risk of not sounding cool, I went with Battletoads and Double Dragon simply because it wasn't hair pull, not to mention controller break, frustrating. It was just fun.

The arcade version by a mile. This version has it all...crude humor, violence, amazing David Wise music,
polished graphics and "dat ass" on the Dark Queen :)
