Forget the Neo Geo X this thing kicks it's ass at NEO GEO emulation and tons of other consoles and computers!
Any doubt check out Qbertaddict1's Youtube page for demonstration videos!

This is the handheld emulation device built by gamers for gamers, it is not a walled garden but an open sourced device.

Here is the Kickstarter, check it out and decide for yourself !

Is this a joke? Why should anyone donate to a Kickstarter so you can essentially manufacture yet another Dingoo clone?

Geez tough crowd. Joke? No not at all, I ask only you guys check the video in the kickstarter or even more so the playlist of vids I linked to Youtube, look at the Neo Geo and other emulation you will see clearly it outperforms Dingoo , Neo Geo X and others. I thought the NEO GEO X was quick cash in crap like the Sega ATgames handhelds but I have been monitoring development of this device since day one and thus far emulation looks great, very sharp, sounds awesome, it will be competitively priced too. You're welcome to be negative, piss on it, jump on me WHATEVER but hey, again, from my first post I have only asked you check out the links, vids and decide for yourself, I am excited about it and I think it has a chance of being pretty sweet for the retro gamer. Thanks for your consideration.

sorry if i sounded harsh. its just im kind of getting tired of all these emulation handhelds. theres so many you dont have enough room to shake a stick at. I think ill just get a PSP to emulate arcades games with. And theres ouya for tv gaming too. i think i may try that if reviews are great.

Ill watch more of those videos though, giga wing is a great shooter.

Thanks, trust me as owner of Dingoo / Caanoo / Yinlips / JXD devices with varying degrees of satisfaction I too was pretty skeptical at first, but I watched all of Qbertaddict1's videos (He got a dev unit) and every video I watched, the sound the performance, the sharp screen, aspect ratio etc, the plain look of the handheld seemed to betray the quality of the display and emulation, the unit will be competitively priced like JXD and Yinlips but it is NOT an ANDROID device so it is not using those emulators, it's already running a basic OS that runs many emulators form Neo Geo to SNES and PC ports REALLY WELL and development is continuing to port even more games, emulators and apps. I AM THE LAST ONE to start a post yelling the praises of some new clone or handheld etc, but following this right from development to speaking with some people involved I am personally excited as a classic gamer, everything thus far indicates this will have the competitive price along with the performance. Again, I could care less if anyone is convinced, I am just being honest and raising awareness and hopefully support for an item that I think is the closets I have seen to "getting it right" If any if you watch the kickstart video followed by the Youtube playlist videos (I promise you will think THAT is what I wanted from the NEO GEO X HANDHELD!!!) if after that you are not at least somewhat excited or at least interested than fair enough!

It says on the kickstarter page it can do older computer games so playing the actual DOOM would be great. And Deus Ex or Half Life 1.

I have 14 different emulators on my computer for console games and then KAWAKS. Ive been wanting a handheld just so I can access arcade games since I cant get the invidia to run MAME. So a handheld would be awesome to get different arcade games to play.

Definitely, it reads like the folks behind this thing are genuinely interested in making a quality product, they seem to be thinking everything through quite thoroughly. It's hard to imagine this thing being a missed opportunity like any number of promising but deeply flawed handhelds.

Man, I wanted to like The NEO GEO X, but I cant now after all of this. GCW Zero is the better buy.

Thank you for giving it a chance. My only motive was to introduce a upcoming emulation handheld that finally seemed to have a decent price with good performance, no gimmicks, I certainly understand initial response and skepticism to just blow it off after all the cheap chinese Android "gaming" devices and even quick cash in's from better known companies (SNK / SEGA) who seem more interested in passing any junk to the classic gamer, the effect is it has made many of us jaded. I would never of started this thread if I thought it was just another in a long line of let downs! I knew those who actually watched the videos, checked the specs and info would see the possibilities. For the record I own many devices from the OpenPandora to the Dingoo, I have been really let down by various portable "famiclones" etc, by the time the NEO GEO X appeared I had been bitten so many times I refused to let fanboyism get the better of me. From the start I thought UH, is this just a locked down Dingoo type device? For those that have been following it turns out to be pretty much the case lol. At this point I honestly don't think big or well known companies have any interest in releasing true quality hardware for the classic gamer now. When I started seeing vids and info on the CGW Zero I did not worry about the brand or company but instead focused on the specs and what I was seeing which was good performance all around, THIS is the type of product that deserves support, attention and funding. Who knows if it does well enough maybe the SNK , SEGA etc will see classic games deserve a modern quality product but hey if they don't then screw them we'll get our classic gaming fix on this.

Because that is how I feel about those others systems and I chose to give my honest opinion on them. In explaining why I think this device is better I point out the faults and disappointments of other offerings to date. Not too complicated really. I call them as I see them and if that means pointing out the faults of similar devices then so be it, I put my money into more than my share of them so it is my right to judge and if need be criticize them.

Perhaps that's how you feel, but you're still trash talking something that doesn't deserve it. It's a dedicated handheld with some pretty nice hardware inside that's just being used and form factored specifically for the NeoGeo. Yes it has some bugs, Tommo also on reddit has been fielding q&a and taking issues back to the coders for upgrades. They have a firmware upgrade on the way. They're looking to clean up the visual problems on the unit and in particular with the doc. They do have more games coming on those cards as well so it's not a one and done with the Ninja Masters 21st game on a card.

Sure you're into emulation handhelds, that's nice, but it doesn't require taking a crap on a decent handheld targeted to a specific market. The NGX is a rebanded dingoo of sorts, top of the line with the cpu and gpu on it for those style machines, and it has drivers a plenty hiding inside for other emulators beyond the NG which is a version of Final Burn Alpha. It's being worked on, and it's being worked on by those neo-geo.com forum hackers too. I'd still rather buy the NG than back yet another flash in the pan kickstarter as those projects in most cases go down in flames not making the cash needed or they go vaporware on people after.

If you are happy and satisfied with it GOOD FOR YOU! Seriously, why so defensive? I stand by everything I said 100%. I do not need to justify my opinion to you or anyone do I ? You are free to disagree or even point out any misinformation I have given (be sure to back it up with proof) but if you have some issue or problem with what you call my trash talking (I call it my opinion) that is you're problem not mine. I disagree with you that the Neo Geo X is a quality product, but I fail to see how this product is comparable in any way and therefore I agree that this angle the Kickstarter promoters are taking is foolish. People that bought the Neo Geo X didn't do so because it's yet another Dingoo clone like this thing. They did so because of the joystick and dock and the fact that it looks like an AES and is officially licensed by SNK. I don't think anyone who bought the X or is considering it would rather have something like this. The promoters would be better off simply showing why this is better than a Dingoo and going after that small niche market rather than wasting any more time attacking a product that is designed for nostalgia and regular consumers and is not even in the same category as this thing. I'm not sure how Kickstarter became a pre-order portal for junk like this, but I sure won't be supporting it.

Here is the thing. I am not "upset" just because I state my case and opinion and I presented you with the info. You and anyone else are free to like it, dislike it, buy into it or warn people not to. I only asked people to look at the info first before making whatever decision they want, fair enough? The same as the opinion and judgments I have made on Neo Geo X and many other devices which I have followed and researched since the beginning. I have been very impressed with the quality of the emulation I have seen on this device, my only motivation was to see that others who may appreciate it are aware of it's existence. Please by all means feel free to have you're own opinion of it and we will just agree to disagree.

Indeed, and the native resolution is 320x240. This is ideal for Megadrive and a number of other classic game systems. 256x224 will be a bit letterboxed and have an off aspect ratio, but it's certainly better than what you get on many other handhelds.

However, I still feel very little excitement at this announcement. There's quite a bit of a "been there, done that" feeling to this.

I think I would be more excited by some manner of handheld that included two or three complete clone systems within, ROMs running off SD, and the ability to output in various resolutions to a television. Clone systems may be inferior from an accuracy perspective in many ways, but there's just something about code running on real hardware.

I really think you guys should add a second analog stick. In the video on the Kickstarter it shows Doom being played and I'm sure a lot of the homebrew FPS' would be developed to work on this. I know I'm not the only one who would like to use a second analog instead of the four face buttons to aim.

Not just FPS'. First person adventure, twin stick shooters, etc.

I don't want to get into drama here, but if you're going for a moderately powerful handheld for retro gaming, why not go with a PSP 3000? Most of the emulators run silky smooth, the PSP's got that huge screen and you can easily get both the system and a large sized memory stick for less than it costs to get the handheld talked about in this thread.

Personally, I think it makes sense to get a PSP or instead go all out and spend the big bucks for the vastly more powerful Open Pandora.

Yes, what can this do that a Dingoo or a Yinlips cannot?

Great question. If I may, below I am pasting a quote from rdemming on Atariage which I think best answers your question (I do not think he will mind):

As an owner of the Dingoo A320 I'm following the GCW-ZERO already for a long time and I even preordered the special edition version a few months ago that are currently shipping. It is the first successor to the A320 that is truly a successor. There were many knock-off devices (A330, A380, GameGadget) but they added very little to the A-320. The GCW-ZERO uses a CPU from the same series as the A-320 but much more powerfull and has a GPU supporting OpenGL-ES aswell.

It runs a version of Linux (OpenDingux) thus lots of Linux applications can be ported with modest effort. There are already emulator for the 7800, Lynx and Atari ST. Probably Atari 2600 and 8-bit emulator are in the works. So it is a must for Atari fan too http://www.atariage.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/atariage/icon_razz.gif

It might not be as powerfull as the latest Android devices but this one is really geared towards gaming. I've heard that Android emulators often suffer from audio lag and have problems using real buttons. The CGW-ZERO has quite some community support so I expect quite a bit from this machine.

For more info go to the Dingoonity forum (http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-zero/).

The battery life is about 7 to 10 hours according to what you are running on the console.

$135 pledge gets a person a unit. Tell me, did you watch the Qbertaddict1's Youtube page for demonstration videos that I linked to in my original post? Because I think if you had you'd have been impressed with the quality of emulation. No lag like with many Android emulations and blows away commercial offerings from even SNK. When you have watched the videos and given a fair comparison in what you are getting new for the price without using custom firmware or hacking than I will be more than happy to accept your judgement. I don't think that is much too ask and all I have asked since the first post. Please give the device an honest fair shake, you of all people are known here for your knowledge of portables but you seem to be judging this one at a glance.

Also I am sorry but the Pandora, you are talking about a price range / category in a totally different price range you might as well suggest a low end laptop at that point and as an owner and user of an OpenPandora it is by no means "much more powerful" look at the specifications of both. Yes I realize this. The Pandora is e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e and this is not nearly so. Indeed it is a little laptop so a comparison isn't fair and I wasn't trying to even do that. The thing is that there are a lot of alternatives out there and I think this kickstarter and anyone championing it needs to clearly define what makes it better or at least different. One thing I would like to know though: how is Sega Master System emulation? I'd like something that could run everything with the FM sound also emulated. Hard to find a handheld that offers that.

The PSP has an awful dpad and and an unreliable analog stick. It's also too big to fit comfortably in a pocket

While all of these statements are true of the original model PSP-1000, they do not apply to the PSP 2000 and especially the 3000. I use my modded PSP 3000 almost every day in a variety of emulators. The 3000's dpad is NOT awful and in fact is better than any other Sony product including the PS3's. Never had any trouble with the analog nub either, and if you have trouble fitting a PSP into pockets, you need bigger pockets. The PSP isn't that much bigger than other portable devices. The 1000 sure was, but the 2000 or 3000? c'mon.

As I said all the emulation I have seen has been excellent, I cannot tell you the result of every single emulator as many are still being added, developed optimized but I ask again, if you will answer, have you watched the playlist of demonstration videos in Qbertaddict1's playlist I linked to? Because MANY examples are given, all have been excellent so far and I have no doubt the rest will be just as good simply because this devices was built for this very purpose of playing classic games which is why you need not hack firmware etc, please tell me IF you have seen the demonstrations thus far that this is NOT worth $135? Here is a new video just added by the way showing an example of PSP w/CFW vs CGW Zero:

Many videos have been done showing the quality of the emulation and various emulators! Judge for yourself but at least watch and compare BEFORE judging. Perhaps if one has an PSP already then they are happy with it but for the asking price starting at $135 for this new unit now how does it compare to the PSP?
Battery life 7-10 hours (depending on what is running), excellent emulation, low price, WATCH THE VIDEOS and tell me is this unreasonable or "unworthy" of support?

OldSchoolGamer I'm totally with you on the worthlessness of the SNES emulators for PSP. Sorry I prejudged it so harshly. I might be interested in picking one up maybe.

Let me ask a few emulation speific questions about that device.

What is the storage source? SD? Micro SD? Something built in?

Does it support:

NES and Famciom with expansion audio?
Famicom Disk System?
Master System with FM Synthesis?
GameBoy/GameBoy Color?
Genesis?
Sega CD?
NeoGeo Pocket Color?
GameBoy Advance?

also, do the various emulators support .png screenshot capabilities?

I will say this one last time PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch the playlist I linked to of demonstration videos. Famicom Disk System has a demonstration dedicated to it. I provided links and info that it seems people keep ignoring. HERE IT IS AGAIN:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_HMl00OlQX9DoItQPN2MemZkgn_eSd3e

I do not personally have a unit so I cannot give you exact specifics. I do not know anything more than the info found on the kickstarter page and what I have seen in the playlist of videos which is why I linked to them in my original post. From the beginning, more than once I have asked people watch the playlist of videos to show the quality of emulation. You may find some of your answers in them, some for sure but as for specifics like if the Master System has FM Synthesis I could not tell you as I cannot test myself. I recall seeing among several demonstrations, gamboy / Gameboy color / TG-16 & TurboCD / Snes / Famicom Disk System / The NeoGeo / Genesis / Mame / Atari7800 / Genesis / Amiga / Ported PC FPS.....

What storage does it use....that info as well as the devices full specifications, current features and a list of some just some of the current developers and more are all available on, THE KICKSTARTER page, again the one I linked to in my first post. So excuse me if I say this one last time, to be clear you are free to not be into it or support it etc. FROM THE BEGINNING I have asked only you give it a fair shake MEANING go to the kickstarter page and read all the info there, watch the playlist of videos to see for yourself just some of the emulators and ore importantly the quality of their performance. THEN TELL ME one of these brand new is not worth $135 and I will totally understand and accept your decision (even if I do not agree with it) Thanks. Now for your convenience those links ONCE MORE:

Kickstarter page with all kinds of wacky stuff like specifications / goals / The Team / Developers (important as they have done some kick ass stuff previously) / Specification (Like storage medium, features etc) OH and you can even ASK QUESTIONS and get answers direct form the Developers!:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gcw/gcw-zero-open-source-gaming-handheld

Playlist of demonstration videos showing several of the emulators and their performance:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_HMl00OlQX9DoItQPN2MemZkgn_eSd3e

I have tried to answer all questions from the beginning but do tire repeating myself or answering questions where all the info (and much more) can be provided from the links I supplied. Thanks.

P.S. @ Satoshi : Internal storage: 8 GB, most of which is available for applications and data / External storage: micro SDHC up to 32 GB or micro SDXC of 64 GB (SDXC cards must be reformatted before use) NOW PLEASE GO READ THE REST FOR YOURSELF....:)

Yeah this is really looking great. I hope it does catch on and so then as time goes on theyll release new versions and have great technical support.

Seriously, everyone. The videos real do prove the quality of the emulation of this device as well as can possibly be done without seeing an actual unit. The gameplay looks incredibly smooth and faithful to the originals.

I have done lots of PSP emulation gaming in the past, and was certainly also disappointed by SNES performance. That was years ago, though, so maybe it's better now.

The d-pad on this Kickstarter device looks amazing, too. Just what I want for classic NES and SNES emulation.

Lot's of people are mentioning PSP, but it's been my experience with the PSP that when the screen scrolls, it can look pretty crappy. Since tons of retro games have those kind of scrolling screens, I just think that the PSP doesn't have the ideal kind of screen for emulation. Plus, widescreen screens aren't where retro games should be played. I'm a 4:3 purist when it comes to playing games pre Dreamcast. There is SO much amazing stuff out there pre-Dreamcast, so why not own a really good portable emulation device with a nice 4:3 screen.

The thing is, I'd really need to see one of these in person to be convinced. I'd need to feel the D-Pad and see how the screen looks.

Other devices are oversized as well, but that doesn't make it acceptable.
I want something between the sizes of a GB micro and a DS Lite.

I have never seen an adult pull any handheld game device out of their pocket. Kids yes. Most people wouldn't keep somthing they paid $200+ for in their pocket. I don't even know why people think that portable or handheld automatically means pocket.

You're kidding, right? Many adults and kids walk around everyday with $200+ smartphones in their pockets. I know I do.

My wallet and phone say hi.
I suppose adults are supposed to carry around little bags and fanny packs for their gizmos?

Not sure if its been posted here but they announced a spec bump from 256 to 512 ram and internal storage from 8 to 16 gigs.

Honestly I'm not sure if they will make their kickstarter goal but I hope they do, seems like an interesting successor to the Dingoo style devices and a MUCH cheaper alternative to the pandora device.

Hope the analog stick is replaceable, the 3DS style nub is vastly superior to the PSP version.

Well they will meet their goal, they have bumped the specs and if any of you are still on the fence:

Must listen podcast!
Justin Barwick, the CEO of Game Consoles Worldwide, just completed an interview for the Geeks With Wives podcast. In the interview he discusses many things about the GCW Zero including the Kickstarter campaign, the hardware, the games, the cost, and more. Give it a listen and then let us know what you think.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, if I pledge $160 do I get a first run console or just a chance to own one by paying more when it comes out?

Second. I've read it like 5 times and I can't be sure.

Not a dumb question. I was wondering that same thing, as it's very oddly-worded. "This level of support or above guarantees you one of our first round of consoles shipped,..." I'll bet we're overthinking it, though.

I did ask them this exact question on their Kickstarter page. I'll post here if I get a response.

I had read that if you pledge $135 you get one of the first run units.

So if you pledge $160 you get the same thing?

Yay they made it earlier today!

I hope they make their stated goal for release in a couple of months. Seems that all they need to do is put production orders in at this point based on what I've seen on that guys youtube channel.

Also to answer the questions posted above:

$135 Pledge Level
-Guarantees a first production run console
-Access to official site/forums

$160 Pledge Level
-Guarantees a first production run console
-Acess to offical site/forums
-T-shirt with GCW logos
-Glass etched with the GCW logo
-Decal with GCW logo

Yeah its worded weird but nothing on the pledge list implies that one gets preference over the other. The only real difference is that your SUPER AWESOME for paying 25 bucks more for a shirt, glass, and decal.

While I'm still not 100% confident based on the wording (you get an early shot at...) I went ahead and backed it at the $135 level.

This looks like it might have enough momentum that they really keep adding features, like supporting the HDMI out and allowing the use of USB controllers, neither of which they have added yet but are in the works, supposedly.

Yeah, guaranteed a first run unit does NOT mean you GET a first run unit with that pledge. It could mean that you get ACCESS to the first run of units only. I wanna pledge, but I really need this to be clear first.

Great news!

They responded to my question and said they had gotten this question from several people. And they posted an update to their Kickstarter project stating clearly that you do, indeed, get one of the consoles for the pledge price. So for $135 or more you will definitely get a console.

This is all assuming, of course, that they do succeed in manufacturing the product. There is never a guarantee with these Kickstarter projects. Personally, I'm happy to take the risk.

Thatd be awesome actually. I bet they could get enough money to do it too. They just have to promise to make the best Sonic game since the Genesis era.

So that still didn't answer the question if the $135 gets the first run or not. I know that both will eventually get one.

Yes $135 gets you a unit. I never saw this as confusing personally.....

They met the kickstarter base goal and on route to the 3rd Stretch Goal adding more to final units by meeting higher pledge levels. YAY ! Here is yet another video and link to Kickstarter as it approached the final days !
