I inherited one of these from a guy at work:

Anybody know anything about it? Is there anything to know *other than* the fact that it's simply a counterfeit version of SMB 3? I emailed the seller just to ask if he knew anything more to pass it on. For what it's worth, he's a really nice guy (responded quickly to the email, said he was pretty sure it was counterfit and didn't want to try to pass it off as legit just to make more money).

I got a converter with it as well, which opens up the door to Famicom stuff on my NES which is sweet. I couldn't really get the game to come up well enough to play, but I did see the intro screens and they were entirely in English (I assume the Japanese SMB 3 is in Japanese?)

The legit ones are in Japanese, not English. I bought a legit one right at release, I just couldn't wait for the North American release.

You usually can tell if it's counterfiet or pirated by looking for copyright notice on the label. Just about all pirated carts don't include any copyright notice at all and many of them often have the ROM hacked to remove the copyright information in the game.

I have a yellow SMB3 game with no title on the label. I also have a red SMB2 cart as well and unlike SMB3, SMB2 is clearly a pirate because Nintendo never released the SMB2 in Japan in cart form, only in disk form. The later cart release was really Super Mario Bros USA, based on the USA version and not the original Japanese version which is a direct sequel of SMB1.
