View Full Version : I've been wondering, what do the Japanese people think of the Startropics series?

I mean they were never released in Japan, hell I don't even think Japan has them on their Virtual Console. They're both fantastic games. So for like the only time in history Nintendo shafted Japan on getting a good game lol.

They probably say: "This is just a friggin' copy of Dababa!"

I know two guys who MIGHT be aware of this game's existence but even then I doubt it (and they're retro players too.)

If I remember I'll have to ask them about StarTropics next time I catch them. I have, however, talked about the topic of importing from the Japanese perspective, and importing overseas games is pretty much non-existent there. Surely that was to be expected haha. I guess the rule of thumb is, if it wasn't for Famicom they don't know about it and/or just don't give a shit. :)

Japanese gamers who are still into playing old Famicom games nowadays are most likely well aware of US/EU exclusives. Even back in the Famicom days, Famitsu magazine reported on US-only games like Spy Hunter and Legendary Wings. Most gamers probably never imported them, though there always has been a small Western game import trade going on in Akihabara.

I believe NES is not what importers in Japan are most interested in. I'm sure I've seen a few things like Advance Wars Days of Ruin and the backlit GBA SP by poking around Japanese sites

I just recalled that I was asked about that Mega Drive unit that's compatible with the actual carts but comes with a handful of ROMs programmed into it. But that's more recent...

Also it's a shame Rollergames isn't for FC either.

I ran into the one guy I had in mind that I wanted to ask... and he never heard of StarTropics before, hadn't a clue what it might be. Given his retro background I think it's a good indication the majority of them aren't aware it exists at all. =(

I'll have to show him what it is in the future then.

I've always wondered Japanese gamer take on North American/European exclusives for various systems. I wish I could stumble upon some Japanese forum or website even, where they talk about non Japanese exclusives and their opinion of them.

Im sure those who are still into the Famicom know about the games by now. Japanese gamers are not entirely out of the loop on western games, heck in an episode of Gamecenter CX they visit a Japanese shop that specifically imports American games only, so it does happen.

There's various weird ones. Among other things I might not have expected Japan to miss Run Saber, Ninja Five-O, that US exclusive GBA One Piece game, NES Strider...
