View Full Version : What are your buying habits?

I was having a conversation with a friend about are different habits for buying for our collection. She almost exclusively sticks with one or two consoles while I will buy games for almost anything if it catches my eye. I know their are also people out there who only collect rpg's or specific niches.
I personally don't stick with one console or genre. I like to pick up interesting gems from were ever. I also have been known to buy games for consoles I don't own. As an added bonus It helps motivate me to add new consoles to the collection. On the flip side I bought a dreamcast lot with 4 controllers VMU's and rumble packs and until recently I never had a game for it. With the Saturn I picked up I bought it without any games and I was just lucky to find that someone forgot to take out Sega Rally.

I"m sorta like you except I tend to not buy games for systems that I don't have. I sorta buy in phases. Lately I've been favoring the 16-bit stuff, but have been really thinking about getting back to my Saturn collection. If I find a good deal, no matter the console or generation, then I tend to jump on it.
Also, I've been really into buying portable consoles. I'm trying to acquire EVERY variation of Gameboy micro. I've got 8 so far...

The only reason I'd ever buy a game for a system I don't own would be to sell it as it's valuable enough to bother so I can afford something I do want. Back in the 90s and early 00s I did the collecting thing and a sad period of having to let most of it go stopped me from doing it again. I buy now what I will play and I will buy some stuff I wish I hadn't been forced to sell to get it back which I may or may not ever put a solid push into but it won't go unused. I still will pick up stuff I can flip to buy games and things I want if the value is there, but it's not a mission.

I use a complicated strategy based upon highly involved mathematical formulas.
It is difficult to explain in words on a forum like this, but basically, if I spot it and do not already have it, it enters the collection.

I primarily buy games that I liked as a kid and unwisely parted with or ones that I was interested in but couldn't buy at the time. When going through 2nd hand game sources, I'll grab just about anything if it's priced cheaply enough. I grabbed Doom, Star Wars and Virtua Fighter for 32x at a charity store because they were dirt cheap. I don't have a 32x and never plan to get one, but they're cool to have around.

I tend to go looking for games for one to two systems at a time, however what I end up buying tends to be somewhat random. Lately, I've been big into getting original Playstation games, but when I come upon a game I want for another system that is priced well, I won't pass it up. Unless I'm already broke.
I don't buy for systems I don't have, as I'm not currently planning on buying any more. This could change if I came upon a well-priced cache of TG-16 games or even possibly N64 games (which I stupidly sold off a few years ago).
TL;DR - anything really, as long as it's a good game

I prioritize Sega games but Saturn to be specific. Then genesis , dreamcast master system etc.
Anything under $5 I usually get if its not a sports title.

I'm much more focused than I used to be. I no longer buy games for systems I don't own or care to own and I don't buy games for systems I do own if they don't interest me just so they can sit on a shelf.
My wallet is happier, my wife is happier, and my game room doesn't look like that spoof episode of hoarders.

I don't like sticking to any one system for a long stretch of time, be it playing or buying. I like to constantly switch it up between all the systems and eras. With my buying, I just nab up whatever I consider a good deal when I find it. I sometimes do get on little kicks, like when I bought almost every TwinBee game within the span of a few months, but that's more getting into online shopping when I'm looking to buy specific things (often imports). I like shopping in the wild to just take me wherever it leads.

On the one hand I could probably say my buying habits are all over the place since I have 15+ systems and consoles. But I will buy most games at the $10 or below price and almost anything $3 or less. I also buy stuff regardless if I have the system or not. Not only is there the chance that I'll one day own the system but that cheap game may go up in price to the point where it would be more beneficial for me to sell it than keep it. But when I do get a new system I tend to start buying more games for it than my other current systems, just to build up a nice mini-collection so I have a variety to choose from when I want to play that system. Right now I buy most stuff for the 360 since it's my system of choice but I still pick up chaep games for my PS3, Wii and all my other systems when I come across a good deal.
I just stick to the NES. It's what I know and what I grew up with in my gaming hey day. I have several other hobbies and commitments so I really don't have time for much else, eventhough I'd really like to repurchase a Dreamcast.

right now I'm repurchasing games that I used to own, but in the future I see myself collecting for systems that as a kid I only owned a handful of games for being the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis

There's really only 10 consoles I buy for. It keeps my buying habits at bay, and I'm happy with what I've got.
Cart-based:
NES
SNES
GEN
GB/GBC (I play them on my SGB or GCN GB player)
N64
Disc-based:

I paired down my collection a few years ago to focus on systems I play more often. Still more than enough (10-ish), but at least I'm a teenie bit more focused. These days I rarely buy anything I don't have the intention of playing, although if I see 2600/Inty/Odyssey2 games I don't have I'll usually buy it if it's cheap, just to fill out the collection.
Arguably the bestest Bomberman that there is tooNo argument here, Saturn Bomberman rules!

I primarily stick to picking up stuff for the NES, but I will buy the odd 16-bit game if I played it as a kid or it looks interesting. I also will pick up peripherals at a good price (I recently acquired a CIB Super Scope for eight bucks, which was awesome). Additionally, I will pick up materials related to older systems if I come across them at a good price. Currently, I have eight CIB Intellivision games without an Intellivision to play them on (I did purchase one, but unfortunately I can't get it to produce any video), and I got some 5200 carts recently, but I don't (yet) have a 5200.
I also have one lone cart for the Colecovision, which, to me, is reason enough to acquire a Colecovision console. :D
The NES is definitely number one priority for me, though.

Same here! i have traded most of my nes/snes games for saturn games. Saturn is really hard to find in the wild, and I believe it will go up in price over time, snes has really gotten pricey and not sure it will stay that way.

I try to only buy games for the systems I currently have and ones that I'll actually play. I bought a high end NES game once and when it arrived I played it for a bit and felt a bit deflated on the purchase.

I buy for pretty much every console. I try to purchase games that are considered "good," or ones that peak my curiosity. I never intend on collecting an entire set of games for any of the consoles.

I used to buy all the time. A couple years ago I sold off most of my collection because alot of it was stuff I very rarely/never used and I needed to pay rent.
Now what I do is I look for big lots of games that are being sold, buy them up, take the games I want to keep and trade/sell the leftovers.

I usually find lots of Saturn stuff in the wild. One place I go to is a used bookstore where they have a wealth of sub $5 Saturn games.

I'm fairly sporadic really. It depends on what I find for one of my systems that either I have been interested or strikes my fancy. So; no real structure to it.
