Not sure if anyone has put 2 & 2 together here regarding these two games, if so feel free to lockerooni. I just tried SC 2 on 3DO for the first time last night and got hooked. I noticed right away that it highly resembles Mass Effect in various ways, I'll make a list.
1. Space Themed
2. Planetary exploration VERY similar
3. gathering minerals from different planets
4. Action RPG (in different forms of course)
5. different alien races with original names (of course ME having more depth)
6. Saving Earth within an entire solar system.
7. Conversation trees similar
I noticed other similarities but can't think of them at the moment, but those are just a few of the resemblances I've seen. I've played all 3 ME games in their entirety and have only played 2 hrs of SC 2. Lets discuss and add more to the list, and if done before....my bad ;)

More directly, mass effect 1 is a modernized version of starflight, a seminal pc space sim that has a fantastic genesis port care of electronic arts.
Star control 2, while a great game in and of itself, borrows heavily from the original starflight.
The first mass effect will really appeal to fans of those games, particularly if you play the pc version. However, me2 and 3 get further and further away from that original formula, and are basically reduced to shooters with branching dialogue trees. They're good for what they are, but me1 is the real masterpiece, IMO.
Of course, I didn't realize that until I played the pc version. The console version is buggy and slow, and just doesn't feel right for some reason.

I only played the 360 version, and I still think ME1 has the best gameplay of the series. Horrible inventory system (which I hear is one of the aspects the PC version improved on), and way too many slow elevator rides, but great gameplay.

You know I never thought of it that way but I've totally knocked off ME2 on PS3, have the 3rd on WiiU but haven't the time to barely touch it still yet and it too has that vibe. SC1 and 2(especially 2) was one of my most favorite DOS games in the day.
If you're up for it, and had no clue, you can get Star Control 2 for PC/Linux/etc free today, it is the entire game and you can optionally mix in released 3DO version assets too, but they had to call it 'The Ur-Quan Masters' (SC2's subtitle) because the name is still owned by someone. Just google the name I said and knock yourself out as it's like fine wine, aged to perfection.

Strange of you to say that, considering the original version is the XBox version. The PC port was reworked by a separate development team. It's also buggy on some hardware configurations (like mine), which causes CPU usage to skyrocket to 100% regardless of your settings. Since Bioware didn't make it, they won't fix the bugs. :\
