I was reading Masters of Doom (Great Book!) and it got me thinking of my early computer days.

I ran a (Warez) BBS called Forbidden Planet and my handle was Captain Zap. It was a typical Pirate BBS that had 0-1 Day Warez(I love the old lingo) for the Commodore 64. I started with a 300 baud modem and 1 1571 Disc Drive. Toward the end I was running a 9600(?? Is that right??) baud modem and had several zip drives daisy-chained. I had my own computer room and I swear it was 10-15 degrees hotter in that room. I was getting games from inside sources before they had copy protection implemented. Of couse now that I have a real job I buy all my games.

Who else on here was into the Commodore BBS scene??
Handle and BBS name?

Lets see if we have crossed paths before.

I guess the stature of limitations have run out so.. :)

I ran a WHQ from 1992-1994 on a C64 w/20M CMD HD, "Particles! BBS" (hence the name of my website). I was the HQ to the following groups: Device, DWI, Epic, Trance, Sunrise, Armaggedon (for a short period anyway), Electric Boyz, and some others I don't remember at this point. It was running off heavily modded C*Base software. I ran a BBS in general off and on from 1990-1997.

I ran the WHQ for a demo group called "Entity". My BBS was called "The Wrong Number", but was called "Splatterhouse BBS" way before that. Our sister HQ site was "Cyberspace" run by "The Pawn". I ran my BBS on a Lt. Kernal 20MB Hard Drive (alot for the c64!!), a bunch of 1581 and 1541 drives, and a 2400 baud modem. I started with just one 1541 and a 300 baud in the beginning however. I also used to be a regular at "Rekall BBS" and a ton of others. I'm sure many out there may still remember me. Oh, and I went by the handle of "Dice" back then LOL

My favorite game intro of all time is the C64 load-screen parody at the start of Vice City. I've always wondered how many gamers understood what the hell that was supposed to be.

I ran (sysop) "The Pirate's Cove" BBS on a 486 dx50 20 meg ram on Wildcat software for a couple of years in the early 90's. The big hit was DOOM. But all those damn kids had 2400 baud modems.. you know how long 4.4 meg takes to download at 0.2k a sec? A long time..

"Pirate's Cove?" That sounds really familiar... What area?

East Texas, though I had some people on as far as Germany.

Okay, that must have been a popular name, then. I pretty much stuck to the local Southwest Michigan area. Wildcat was neat, since it supported Ripscript. Let's see who remembers that stuff. ;-)
