Some time ago I came across some Sonic design documents. Some of it is junk but every now as I dig around I'll find something interesting. Here is the original back and front design for what would become Sonic Spinball then titled Sonic Pinball.

I never really thought about this aspect of gaming.
I have always liked prototypes, because they presented a look back and sometimes showed an alternate history of what could have been.
After looking at your artworks, I realized they were the same concept, but in the physical design arena!
They really do look great. Thanks for sharing!

Where on earth did you get these? Because this doesn't sound like something i can hop on ebay right now and buy for a few bucks shipped.
Those are amazing.
And remember prototypes are one thing into showing you possible differences that the game could have had.
But the original art work in the designing area shows you exactly what was going through their heads from the very start on where they felt they wanted to take this.
I mean could imagine if he had one that did not show tails on the cover of sonic 2? Leading to the idea that they didn't even think about adding a secondary character in the game.

There are some early design documents in here with Toe Jam and Earl on the cover of Sega Genesis Wacky Worlds. I thought that was interesting.

These pieces are the work of Greg Martin. I'm sad to say that we have just learned that Greg passed away in 2013.
Besides Sonic Greg worked on a great many titles for many companies. You can view some of his work here.

Dan Maresca (Bronty) who knew Greg better than I did posted a thread with the news on Nintendoage.

Incredible body of work, second to none. This man's work is as vital/important to video game history as any game designers'.
