When trying to play games with component cables, I get black and white wavy picture. I already enabling the various resolutions for it, but alas, I get nothing. The Xbox opening/settings screen and any movies I play work just fine, but with games, just crap. I also tested out component with my PS2, and it's just fine. The games I tried it with are:

Namco 50th Anniversary (no component support)
Fable: Lost Chapters (480p)
Atari Anthology (1080i)

All have the same results: nothing.

I looked around online, and apparently my Xbox was never updated:

Does this mean I'm SOL? And if so, how can I rectify it? Note: this Xbox is unmodded.

Are you using the official Microsoft Component High Def Pack?

Or the Official component cables?

I'm asking because many have found that if you don't, the result is terrible.

No, I'm using Psyclone. If it were a problem with the cables, DVDs would display the same problem too, though, no?

Puzzling problem

Namco 50th Anniversary (no component support)
Fable: Lost Chapters (480p)
Atari Anthology (1080i)

All games support component output. Not just the 480p releases and the handful of HD releases.

I've never heard of any Xbox Live updates that enhanced the video capabilities of the Xbox. But it has been years so I suppose I might've updated and not realized it. But if it did, I certainly can't find anything about it via a search engine which seems strange since an update that enabled progressive scan and even HD in some limited circumstances would've been big news with a lot of stuff about it from the time still floating around out there.

But I really doubt it.

So it turns out it's related to the dashboard: http://xbmcxbox.blogspot.com/p/update-to-xbox-dashboard-5960.html

Only problem is, I have the updated system, so that rules that out. I suppose it may be the cables, but I really don't know why it would work fine for DVDs/Dashboard but not games.

What's related to the dashboard?

What I see at that link is simply a list of games that included the latest revision of the firmware on disc that the user can pop into their Xbox to still get fully updated today despite Xbox Live being gone in order to mod their console with software designed for that revision of the console's hardware.

The link I supplied in the first post seemed to indicate that that guys component problems were solved when he updated his Xbox. I'm assuming the revision that is included on those games is the same thing, although I suppose I could be wrong. If it is, then I'm already updated, and I still have my component problems, and so whatever problems I'm having is entirely unrelated to any firmware revisions.

I don't know what that guy was talking about, but I imagine he was simply doing something wrong and finally did it correctly and just attributed it to a firmware update solving his issue.

Start over again by disabling any resolutions you checked other than 480i and see what happens (480i is carried over component just fine... it's not just for ED and HD resolutions).

I'm such an idiot. I, uh, shouldn't even have had 480i checked... All is well now. *sigh*

Thanks.

Are your 480i games displaying with it unchecked?

I don't recall unchecking a supported resolution. I just remember checking each resolution supported by my tv (I'd go check, but I'm lazy and it's hooked up via component to my SD Sony Trinitron these days so I'd have to move it to another tv to try progressive scan and the couple of HD games I own). It was displaying everything in my library just fine all the way from 480i only titles to the 1080i releases like Atari Anthology.

Atari Anthology looks great in HD. Particularly the vector arcade games.

That's just me being an idiot. I read "480i" and must have drew the rest of the lines and curve to turn that into "480p". Sigh.

There are component SDTVs. For those 480p has to be left unchecked.

Some Xbox games require an earlier revision console to use 480p. Notably Gunvalkyrie and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

The unmodded PAL dashboard however, does not even have an option for 480p. Whether or not a game is compatible holds no meaning.
