Hmm quite untimely but I'd assume it will have a collector value down the road.

Bingo. My friend bought one. The aes stick is crap.
I never understood who this was designed for. If you're actually interested in playing neo geo games, nothing offered with this thing sounds appealing. In fact, many people bought one with the intention of hacking it or keeping it sealed on a shelf.
The thing that I didn't understand, was the aspect ratio of the screen. widescreen and Neo-Geo aren't a match made in heaven. Should have had a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, like that GCW Zero thing. Who wants to play with their games stretched out ? Who wants to play with black bars on the sides ? Nobody really wants to do it eiher way, but with a widescreen aspect ratio, you have to choose between two crappy options.

I bet itll worth something to someone unopened.
I really wanted this for months but then I didnt get it, glad I didnt ultimately. But I wish similar better made console clones will be made in the future.

So does this mean that the time to buy one is now or wait until later to find it?

Some people are going to put it up on ebay for $500 in the next month, then when no one buys them theyll be going for $100 or less. Id buy a stick for $15 at most I think.

The whole arguement fans of this thing were making was that it was a more affordable machine to them than an AES, but um thats already what the MVS and Neo Geo CD are for, especially the latter.

This was one of my complaints as well.
If you want a more affordable Neo Geo experience, a consolized MVS is the way to go, ideally. I realize even THAT may be cost-prohibitive for a lot of people, but I think MAME would provide a better experience than the NGX. Just my 2 mesetas.

From what I understand the limited edition gold bundle has gone out of production. The stand alone handheld is still coming.

What about the titles on the Wii Virtual Console or any Neo games that are on PSN/XBLA? I know there's the SNK Compilation on Wii and PS2 though I've heard the PS2 version has issues. There's also the various anthologies and compilations on PS2 like Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Art of Fighting among others.
As far as the OP goes, I wanted a NeoGeo X strictly for the novelty of it but never bit because of the price tag. If it were half that price I might have been more inclined to pursue getting one.

The ps2 collection was awful with its rampant slowdown.

Wishful thinking at best.
The end was near when it was discovered that it was no more than a cheap chinese media player running an outdated version of Final Burn Alpha.
Since you can run the exact same (current version) emulator on a PSP or any number of devices the appeal of this system became nil.
If you buy one now, you are literally paying for the name.

Rumors of the X's death are greatly exaggerated:
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/25/neo-geo-x-production-to-continue-more-games-peripherals-on-the/
Now I know that many will still be skeptical, and I am as well, but I'm still glad to hear that it's not officially dead yet. For what it's worth, flaws and all this device has really rekindled my love for the Neo. I've been re-focused on completing Samurai Shodown 2 and Metal Slug and I have to say that the much hated credit limit has been part of the motivator for me, and my skills in both games have improved in the last few weeks trying to get it done on just 4 credits. I also really like (love?) the clicky pad on the handheld and couldn't imagine going back and playing these with a d-pad or analog stick. I've also had zero issues with the joystick and with a little fiddling on the TV I can get a picture that's comparable to the composite output of my actual AES (which really isn't THAT great either).
Here's hoping that at least a few game packs make it out before the doors really are shut for good!

I don't buy the death of it either as much as some fanboys of similar products would like to see it dead or those hating the problems or price of it(understandable on that stuff.) The real system to me is this years handheld. The last year thing was to bait the big fans with deeper pockets who want all the added parts, fluff and extra title. On Reddit a Tommo employee as talking up the thing for more games but not which, their support team and testing, intentions and asking for any bugs or issues they can address in firmware and hardware updates.
I'm still interested, but I do want to see a few of the non-dock issues the main unit has addressed, still wish it would also take more than 4 credits as an option, and allow for more games to run either they release or by other means.

I'm hoping that the update gets released, not just for the improvements, but to get the upgrade process out in the open to make hacking easier.
This thing is begging for unibios and more emulators.

I heard a PS1 bios was in it, some NEO GEO games were released in Japan for the PS1. KOF 95 thru 99, Samurai Shodown 1 thru 3, and Metal Slug. Even a 3D Fatal Fury game. I dont know if this has the power to do PS1 properly though.
