Winning Eleven 7 should arrive on my doorstep sometime this week. I can't wait till November for the PAL release (Pro Evolution Soccer 3) so I thought I'd splash out.
I tend to wait to make sure I know a game will be compatible. For example, with F-Zero, there are problems using it on a PAL machine with Freeloader as the menus don't appear - you have to pretty much guess what you're doing. An Action Replay is the answer there, or a Jap machine.
Or in my case with that game, I'll wait a little while.
I was going to get Viewtiful Joe on import but I'll hang on a little while longer now.

Dracula X: Nocturne In The Moonlight, Strider Hiryu 1 & 2 and Gradius III & IV. Of course, the last two's future in the US was in doubt when I bought the imports.

For me it was Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting for the SNES. I bought it for about $98 back in the early 90s and NO ONE believed that it existed until i let my neighbor play. I guess he spread the word because hours later i was one of the most popular guys on in the 'hood :P

The GBA, and a few games to go with it.
I was going on a really long road trip, and I needed something to keep me occupied. Not too bad of a price either... $120 for the unit, mario advance, and f-zero.

Street Fighter 2 for SNES. I bought it for $99(!) at a mail order place :P
Then later on I was actually in Japan, and on the streets of Akihabara lo and behold, it was Street Fighter turbo. I bought it, and also on that trip I picked up Mario Kart, & Legend of Zelda for Gameboy. I hadn't heard of any of these so Mario Kart was the most amazing discovery.. and it was months later when it finally showed up in the U.S. :D

Ikaruga for Dreamcast. The thing is, though, at the time I bought it, all signs pointed to "no U.S. release".

Taito Memories Gekan and Joukan for the Japanese PS2. I didn't think those games were coming to the U.S. ever, so I imported a ceramic white slim PS2, and those were the first two import PS2 games I ever bought. I've been hooked ever since...

The first 3 Gyakuten Saiban games on the DS. We just couldn't wait, and since you could select English in it, why not?

I actually went to Die Hard Gamers Club's physical store in the LA area to pick this one up. I think it was about 120-130 total. It was also a treat to see the legendary store advertised in the EGM mags.
As for me the first import I got was an 8bit famicom with what I consider "Legend of Kage 2" (Demon Sword in the west). A few years later it was Super Mario Bros. 3, with a couple of other famicom games in between and thereafter. But those 2 were the most notable. It was pretty cool to play the infamous SMB 3 a year before it came out stateside... thanks relatives from overseas! =)
