Super Mario 64 - I get caught in an infinite loop when trying to enter the 30 stars door

Hi there,

I recently started playing Super Mario 64 again and have enjoyed every minute so far. As many of you already know, in order to open the 2nd star door you need to have 30 stars. Well, today I've finished collecting 30 of them and wanted to open the door. That's where the infinite loop starts. Mario opens the door using the star power and I get a message saying "Reacting to the star power, the door slowly opens". However, the door does not open - Mario takes one step back, opens the door using the star power and I receive the message again. Restarting the game does not fix the problem either.

This reminds me of a creepypasta story i read one time on encyclopedia dramatica. dont know if i could go and find it again, but ill try.

Have you ever gotten to that point in the game with this particular cart? It could be a glitch i nit or bit rot.

With the exception that my story's real and not really creepy but annoying.

Nope, I have completed the game once but this is a completely new save file.

Have you tried the really obvious - like going through the first star door, in to a level and coming out again, then trying the door? Can you get any more stars (it's been ages since I've played it). I had a similar problem, years ago, with a different game. It was (apparently) fixed by doing something like that (vague, I know, but years of heavy drinking have taken their toll)

EDIT: Oh - and any stuck buttons on the controller?

Thanks, that did the trick. I entered the first world, exited from it and now going through that door works.
