I bought one for xbox360 and modded it quite a bit, and built a couple for old systems.
If I had more cash maybe I'd collect them, but I doubt I'd get much use out of more than a few.
I really only like the Namco Noir panel layout, too, so there are currently only a handful of sticks that I would even want to play on.

It's funny that this thread popped up recently because I just modified a T5 PS2 stick with a PSX Dual Shock PCB, Seimitsu LS-58 and Seimitsu buttons. It was my first arcade stick mod and I finished it today. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. Works beautifully. I can honestly say I've been missing out big time. Just waiting for my plexi and artwork. It is going to be Darius themed, with art I photoshopped together. I mainly play shmups, so the stick is an ode to my favorite ship, the Silver Hawk, and the swirling backgrounds of the series.

I absolutely hate joysticks. I started my video gaming on a NES pad, so anything else that isn't a controller with a D-pad and regular buttons doesn't feel right to me. Hell, it was well into the PS2 generation that I would even accept analog sticks, and that was only by force (though now I can't see how I ever did without them), but a straight joystick can to to hell. Though if I had the cash I would collect them, just for completeness, and for friends that like joysticks that come over to jam on my shit.

Yes, I collect any and all joysticks.
Right now there seems to be a sentiment in the gaming that it's either a JLF, LS-32, or nothing.
However, I am attracted to a number of "inferior" joysticks for their historical and sentimental value. I'm looking to collect a JLW, older seimitsu sticks, Wico P360, and the Nintendo joysticks found on the VS sitdown cabs.

Not intentionally so much, but I keep 'em when they end up in my hands. I think most I've gotten in lots or as gifts, but I'll occasionally buy one in the wild if it's cheap and a decent brand. The big problem with sticks is their size, but I also don't really use them much, most often preferring a pad instead. Probably my favorite is the Namco PlayStation arcade stick. Just a really solid, basic stick that's great not only on the PS1 and PS2 but also for emulation (particularly MAME) via an adapter.

Theyre better for fighting games more than anything else, also bullet hell shooters at times.

The thing about joysticks is that historically, most of them suck.
Hundreds of joysticks were made throughout the 80s and 90s for various consoles, and most of them failed at delivering what they were supposed to: the arcade at home.
Most of them were small, cheap, and mushy. I mean, look at this:
http://www.gameoz.com.au/images/detailed/3/Super_Advantage_Super_nintendo_arcade_stick.jpg
The button layout on this is atrocious, and I'd say the joystick probably uses rubber pads rather than microswitches.
If you press a joystick in a direction and it doesn't make a clicking noise, you can probably disregard it.
By the way, a proper SNES arcade stick would be the Capcom Power Stick. 100% authentic arcade parts from the period.

SF 2 was released in 91, SNES in 1990, so they could have updated the stick, only first year model would have been bad and made the update look worth having.

They did not suck. They were good for the times. Not until tournaments got so big did people start being so serious with micro switches and all that modding stuff.

I disagree with that. There have been microswitch based joysticks for a long time. I even had one for the NES. The reason they weren't popular at first is because they were more expensive to make.
Also, microswitches themselves didn't dominate the industry up til the early 90s. Before that, leaf style switches were more common. And I've never seen a commercial home joystick that used those.
Things like the SNES advantage might be taken on their own merits as decent input devices, but as a kid I hated them because they existed in this middle ground between a standard control pad and an actual arcade stick. What I dreamed of was this:
http://www.retroist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/championship-joystick-ad.jpg
EDIT: looks like I wasn't the only one.
Nintendo did release an updated SNES joystick with a more SF2 friendly layout, the Score Master.

Not true. I picked up an Apollo 8-button clicky arcade stick that has a 15-pin PC port plug. Using it with my Atari 5200 via PC adapter cable is an awesome gaming experience.

Are they like x-arcade sticks, where there's a standardized connector and different cables/adapters for different systems?
I've only used them to play in the store that used to carry them, and all we ever played there were arcade fighting games.

The gameport can support several more than that through multiplexing. The Microsoft sidewinder's I have make great emulation pads and they support 10 buttons.
There's actually a pretty good history of PC ports for fighting games, especially SNK stuff.

Yeah I collect arcade sticks.
Mostly from 16-bit to current gen. Although I had a lot of 8-bit and prior (even PC XT) back in the day, though I no longer have them. Have quite a bit now, including exact duplicates for 2p... however these are my favorites overall below. I tend to prefer larger, heavier sticks for home use.
I started on arcade gaming first. Didn't get my very own console til the NES. Took some getting used to with a pad. Then I got hardcore into vs. fighting and shmups, so a stick was the natural choice.

Nope. They take up too much space to display and collect. I can see having a few that you use but anything more then that is just going to sit in storage. I also barely play any fighting games this generation, same with shooters. Even when I do play retro games of those genres I always prefer a D-pad.
I always looked at them as a gimmick, trying to bring the arcade into homes. Now the elitist pretend like sticks give someone the most potential but ill still kick they're ass with a D-pad.

The directional input is only a small part of it, though.
Using all of your digits to press buttons is much better than just using your thumb. It's like comparing a microswitched computer keyboard to the qwerty keypad on a phone.

What systems can those big ones be used for?
The ones above natively support PC, PS3, 360 and Saturn. I've got adapters for use on other consoles.
I like them the most because they're the closest to a real deal cabinet in terms of mass produced sticks. TEs, the smaller Horis, Qanbas, etc etc etc are nice too for portability/travel. However for a dedicated home console setup, bigger and heavier is better imho.
I also collect arcade machines (mostly japanese ones) and those Saturn HSS-0130s are nearly 1:1 duplicates of a real SEGA Astro City arcade machine panel.

Thanks for the info!
The blue adapters took me a bit to figure out too but they're Dreamcast to PS2 (not the console, but the PC hardware) adapters. I'm guessing they're used for the keyboard/mouse stuff like typing of the dead if you didn't want to buy the official keyboard. The cable at the top is actually one of those serial cables that goes from the back of your DC and can be plugged into your computer for homebrew, save backups, stuff like that.
Really, out of the whole bundle the only thing I could make out was one of the sticks so I think I really made out at $43 after tax for the lot. Just need to find an extra AV cable so I can sell the extra system/controllers.

My answer to this question is "No."
It's just not economical in terms of space, so my preference is to just mod a stick I already have--just grab an MC Cthulhu (http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/46572/the-official-cthulhu-and-chimp-thread-try-our-new-dreamcast-flavor), switch out the stick and buttons for ones more to your liking, do the necessary soldering and construction... this one stick becomes the only stick you'll ever need.
(If that sounds difficult... it isn't. I know nothing about electronics and I was able to mod this stick just following guides I found online. It's not difficult)
For 16-Bit consoles, I just don't care. Most home ports from this era weren't arcade-perfect anyway, so why should the controls be? Besides, it feels more nostalgic to play with a six-button Genesis controller than with an arcade stick that I never owned as a kid, especially as I sadly never got to go to arcades much.
For anything from the PS1 to more recent eras though, as well as emulation, I'm a lot pickier since the adaptations tend to be more arcade-accurate, at times even being straight emulations. I mean, I can play Fatal Fury Special with a D-pad, but it just doesn't feel right.
This is only for fighting games though. I honestly can't see how people play shmups or platformers with anything other than a D-pad.
kedawa
02-25-2013, 03:58 PM
I'm the exact opposite. I refuse to use a control pad for anything unless I absolutely have to.
I started out on joysticks in the arcade and at home, and those twiddly little thumb controllers have never felt right to me.

As promised, here is a picture of my finished PS2 Hori Tekken 5 stick mod. It was a rather expensive endeavor, but the finished product has truly exceeded my expectations.
I only used the cable and the case from the original stick when all was said and done due to input lag with the Hori PCB on my converter for the original XBox, but that's fine. I went with the T5 because it was affordable, I intended to modify it from the beginning, and I love the shape of the earlier HRAPs. Unmodified, it was not a great stick. (Sorry there's no shot of the internals, but I forgot and didn't want to take it apart again)
I photoshopped the artwork using a cool painting of Jupiter's clouds from deviantart, pictures of a Silver Hawk garage kit, and the logos of course. It took some time (especially the rocket exhaust), but it came out awesome. The picture is a bit blurry because I took it with my phone, but the artwork is super sharp in person.
Now I just need to avoid getting addicted to stick building!

Tuna Sashimi indeed. \m/ Thanks for the compliments guys!
I collected seriously for about 15 years (from around 1995 to 2010) and most of it now sadly sits in climate controlled storage. I used to have it all set up ROD-style, but we moved to a smaller place because I went back to school. I have a 4-drawer particle board dresser filled to brim with peripherals. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it all. However, I still have the ability to play almost everything I need to with a combo of an XBox 360, a softmodded original XBox, a chipped PS2, and an NES and Vectrex with flash carts. Still, there are things I will never sell if I can help it. I'm sorry I'm digressing a bit here, but my point is that the custom stick is the first time since I bought my modded Duo-R from D-Lite ages ago, or got my Vectrex from my groomsmen that a gaming item feels truly personal. It may even be more personal because I built it to my own specifications. I highly recommend building a stick as a project for anyone who has an interest in a genre that can benefit from it.
Oh, and the Epyx 500XJ for the Atari 2600 is probably my favorite joystick of all time other than the one I just built. It was so before its time. I only had ever used one with a Commodore 64 at a friends house back in the early 80's until I purchased a pair of my own a couple years ago.

KBM Championship Joystick (SNES)
Super Advantage (SNES)
Capcom Fighting Stick (Sega Genesis)
Neo-Geo Kidney style sticks x2
Sega HSS-0130 (SS, modded for PS1/PS2)
Street Fighter 2 Anniversary Joystick (PS2/XBOX, modded for PC)
Neo-Geo Stick MOTW Edition (PS2)
Hori Real Arcade Stick 2 (PS2)
And I tihink that's it.
I play most current fighting games with my HRAP2 using a Pelican PS2 to PS3 adapter (works with PS3 and PC)
Nice collection Genei. How do you like the kidney style Neo Geo sticks? Is there any difference or advantage over the regular AES arcade sticks that come with the system? That's all I have so I don't have a lot to compare. Also I'm incredibly jealous of your Mark of the Wolves stick. Very nice.

I don't collect arcade joysticks per se, it's just that I started playing video games with the NES, and the gamepad made my hands hurt. Plus, it was different than the arcade controls at the arcade, and I wanted consistency; I hated how I played with my fingers and wrists at the arcade and played with my thumbs at home. Fortunately, there was a cure: On my birthday, when I finally had enough money, and my mom took me to Target (Or maybe it was K-Mart, but I think it was Target) where I was united with my greatest companion:
http://www.atari2600.com/ccp7/media/ecom/prodxl/NESCON0022LX.gif
...and I never touched a gamepad again. Not unless I had to, anyway. When the SNES came out I was in hell because there were no arcade sticks for it. I never saw an SNES Advantage, and wound up dropping $90 on that C&L Controls arcade stick because it was the only SNES joystick I'd ever seen. It wasn't until later that I found an SNES Advantage and started using it as it's more practical. But from then on, I would not get a game console unless I could also get an arcade stick for it.
So, my collection comes out of necessity rather than novelty. Here's most of what I've accumulated over the years-

Nice collection XYXZYZ. Is that a TurboGrafx controller in the bottom right of the picture? I'm still trying to track one down. I imagine it would make most the games on TG more enjoyable. Also, what is the white controller in the top right? I don't recognize that. It looks it has two sticks?

That is an official TG16 joystick, I got it on eBay though I don't remember if it came with the TG16 console I bought or if it was a separate purchase. It is a nice comfortable joystick, comparable to the NES Advantage. I see one on eBay now for $30 and one for $40, on average they usually go for about $40. The one next to it with the green buttons is a PC Engine joystick made by Asciiware, who also made the NES Advantage and as you can see it's basically an NES Advantage for the PC Engine.
The white joystick at the top right is a little Frankenstein project I'm working on. As mentioned above, I don't like gamepads and this is an attempt to make an analog arcade joystick for the Xbox 360 so I can play analog control games more comfortably.
It's an "Ultimate Fighting Stick", (UFS) a wireless controller for the PS2 and Xbox made by Nakiworld.
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z51/derkoi/joystick.jpg
It's the second worst joystick I've ever used, just behind the InterAct Shadowblade. The stick and buttons are terrible, but it has those little trackball-looking analog controls, which are half-sphere caps sitting on a normal analog stick. I've taken the board out of one of those Atari 2600ish Xbox 360 joysticks (You can see one on the shelf there next to the Super Mario Bros.2 glass) and wired it to the UFS, added LEDs, a Home button and a toggle switch for autofire. I had an old SNES Advantage that doesn't work (bad IC) so I gutted the joystick and drilled a small hole to fit the analog stick into.

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa56/XYXZYZ/projects/UFS_guts_zps4843a3fd.jpg
It works, but the analog stick isn't very comfortable. I picked up an old IBM compatible joystick at a thrift store and I like it a lot, I'm trying to figure out how to use it instead of the SNES stick.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa56/XYXZYZ/projects/IBMJS_zps10812a8c.jpg
Also, I still need to replace the digital stick and buttons with Sanwas or whatever. I haven't actually worked on this project in a long time, I need to pick it back up and finish it. But I just don't play modern 3D games enough to provide any motivation. :|

Thanks man!
The NG Kidney sticks feel kinda awkward if you're used to bigger/stantard arcade sticks mainly because of their shape and size. The kidney sticks are too small for me, but other than that they're fine. The buttons and stick are very responsive and feel very well made and sturdy. The original NG sticks are better IMO.
Sorry for the late response BTW, didn't notice your post until today.

I wish instead of collecting whole new sticks I could just get new cover tops plates. Itd be awesome and cheaper.

I bought a Pelican Real Arcade Pro for the PS2 from Gamestop a few years back, which was supposed to have "authentic" arcade parts in it. The stick and buttons were definitely arcade style, but they weren't of the highest quality. The buttons were actually pretty good , but the joystick used leaf springs which I don't like. I replaced them with a Sanwa joystick and button. I had to drill out a panel and use an adapter to make the Sanwa stick fit, but an American style stick from Happ would have fit without any modification.
Hey MarkMan....

You can do this already! A lot of people in the arcade stick/modding community do this.
Check this site out for starters: http://www.tek-innovations.com/arthobbies/

The only stick I have for consoles is the 6 button genesis one. I just took it apart and cleaned it so I could enjoy some gunstar heros action. A local shop has a saturn fight stick that I might pick up some time soon but i'm in no hurry considering it's been sitting on that same shelf for two years now.

Nothing fancy, but have always been a fan of the stick below. Happy to have finally gotten an import one boxed in nice condition:
