This past week, I finally got my first ex-retail standee, a tabletop model made to advertise Wii Sin and Punishment 2 (a game I own). What is a standee? One of those point-of-sale cutouts made to advertise a game. Most nowadays are pretty large, with lifesized characters like Halo's Master Chief or Duke Nukem.

My model was pretty beaten up, heavily sunfaded, and was missing a cardboard cutout object that stuck onto the main piece. It seems to be pretty unusual in that it uses both electronics and a motor to make it more eye-catching; most are just cardboard cutouts. Too bad everything was broken inside! I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and a multi-meter so it turned into a fun project sorting things out. The soldering for the electronics was very poor and it was grounding out, cooking the batteries and burning out both green LEDs for the eyes. Thankfully the LED dimmer circuitry was still functional. I corrected the poor solder work, tracked down new solder points, added a new battery holder, stole two replacement red LEDs from a dead SNK arcade board. Wallah! Fixed.

Here's a picture of the only other one I could find online:63156316

Does anyone else collect these? Care to share with a collector just starting out?

Nope. If I come across them i'd sell them. I don't have the space to display them neat and clean. I'm having enough trouble with all these collectors and limited editions this gen being so big and taking up so much space.

I have a few. I already referred to them as "Counter Cards". I mostly just collect the ones Working Designs put out, and I only need one more :( I have...

Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete
Vanguard Bandits
Growlanser Generations
Arc the Lad Collection
Resident Evil (GC Remake)
Xenosaga
Final Fantasy VI (GBA remake)

I think they're great display pieces.

I have just a few too. Nothing big and nothing fancy. I just have ones related to tri-Ace's games. And I'm not even sure if they'd all be considered "standees". What do you call those big cardboard boxes that are like giant versions of a game's case? I have a couple of those, for Star Ocean: The Second Story and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. But I do have traditional standees for Radiata Stories and a tiny one promoting the EB Games pre-order poster bonus for Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

Heh, I'm a big WD fan as well but don't really have the space (or money) for those standees. I saw that Lunar:TSSC one end last week at like $300+ and was like "WOT?!".

Yeah, that was pretty depressing.
