I recently picked up the much maligned Kid Kool for the NES at the Flea Market. While the game play and design has significant problems that hurt the overall game experience badly, the ability to jump super high and far as well as to skip across the water with keep bringing me back. Kid just soars when he jumps if he builds up enough speed, which plays horribly with the level design and upward screen scrolling, but, regardless, is a thing of beauty from a game that cost me $3.

What other retro games out there have unique/noteworthy jump mechanics?

Metal Storm for the NES has an amazing gravity flip mechanic.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (U.S.A.) with Luigi and Princess and the ducking charge jumps definitely has some noteworthy jumping.

Bananan Ouji no Daibouken or Banana Prince for the Famicom has an interesting bean stalk growing ability that helps the hero catapult through the air.

Duck Tales on the NES was defined by Scrooge's pogo jumping.

Kid Kool, known in Japan as Kakefu Kun no Jump Tengoku: Speed Jigoku, lit. "Kakefu's Jump Heaven: Speed Hell", was both blessed and cursed with its jumping.

The Bonk series on the Turbografx-16 has the spinning jump, which works o' so well with the TG-16 controller's built-in rapid fire toggle.

I'd be hard pressed to list (recall) games that use the double jump:
Muramasa: The Demon Blade on the Wii is the only one that comes to my mind at the moment, actually.

Jumping Flash! has the 'look down' mechanic when you jump, as well as triple jumping.
