View Full Version : Why EB Games didn't hire me

Last month I complained that EB Games didn't hire me because they said I didn't have enough retail experience. Well I just learned that it was because of my lack of videogame knowledge!

EB Games has an ad in the new issue of GMR (actually they have ads in every issue of GMR since GMR is their official magazine). Anyway, on page 49 of the September issue (#8), they have an ad where you could buy pre-owned gaming systems for only $19.99 each. And they have photos of the three systems along with their names. I've heard of the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Dreamcast but the NINTENDO PSX is new to me. I guess since I never heard of a Nintendo PSX, I have no right trying to get a job at EB Games.

:hmm:

Man, a Nintendo PSX must be a really oddball system.

Wouldn't that be a SNES CD unit?

Quick, everyone, EB has Prototype hardware for only $20! LOL LOL LOL

For about a year period (when they were still just Funco, if I remember right) I had them giving me an application like every week. I would always help the customer quicker and with more knowledge than they did, so they wanted me on staff. I still don't work there, haven't even tried for a while (that and I don't have a ride and I HATE the bus).

Maybe they're selling PSX lookalike Famicom clones.

I was wondering rolenta ..when you went for the job did you ask to buy a Nintendo PSX,or what it looked like?

I may know why they didn't do any hiring that day..

Thanks, but since then I was offered a reporting job with the local newspaper. However, instead of taking that, a friend gave me a job working on his website (www.sageontheweb.com). I'm making a lot more than I would have at EB Games; I work my own hours; dress however I like; don't have to deal with the public; and NO POLITICS!!!!

Not enough experience? LOL Hmm....maybe you should show them a couple copies of your resumes (books)

For my interview I brought a copy of Phoenix; a CD containing a G4 show about Atari in which they interviewed me throughout, and Ralph Baer as a reference. And the kicker is that I had about five years of retail experieince before I became a programmer.

Anyway, do you really want to work for a company that clueless?

Of course not. But after being out of work for two years, I was at the point where if I had to take anything, I might as well do something that I at least enjoyed.

The lady who takes care of me at my local EB is great, she really is -- always friendly, polite, suggesting new things I'm actually interested in, always calls on my pre-orders, and knows what she is talking about.....recently, I came in with a bunch of pre-orders to take care of me for the rest of the year, and when she realized she had missed one, she added it herself so I was plesently surprised by getting a call the day it came out. :)

The point? She's also not afraid to poke fun at the company, some of her bonehead co-workers, and the retail/gaming industry in general.

When I told her the story about what happened to Leonard Herman at EB last month, she said she'd try to work up the chain so some day SHE could send him a personal apology letter along with free games for life. :D

I'll be in there next week to get my Madden 2004 and Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII when they come out. I'm sure someone has already told her about the magazine (I get it also) but I can't resist the temptation to rub it in. LOL She allready knows what a bunch of idiots she works for. :-D

Just goes to show there are good people in any line of work.....
