View Full Version : Rarer Legend of Zelda (NES)?

I don't know if it's very common knowledge, but there were two versions of the Legend of Zelda (GOLD) released in the US. You can tell what version you have mainly from the save screen, if it just says "Continue, Save, Retry" and that's it, it's the old version. If it has a red box around those options, it's the newer revision.

Is one of these versions rarer or more sought after among collectors, or it doesn't matter? I was just curious.

I see to recall having the first edition gold one he was talking about, and something happened to it -- the battery went dead, I think, this was a long time ago and I was just a kid -- and had to return it to Nintendo. My next copy was the newer gold plated one.

Although I thought the old version only had TWO options? :/

Correction: The newer version has a red box that says "Hold in the Reset button when you turn off the power" on the save screen, not around the "continue, save, retry" options--my fault. The old version just has the three options, that's it.

I was just curious becuase I've had and played quite a few different Legend of Zelda carts throughout my childhood and beyond, but I've never come across an older (without the red box) version until just now, when I recieved it in a lot I won on eBay.

Both have three if you die, but only two if you pause the game and hold "Up + A" on controller two (save w/o dying). :-D

I Also had to do this. I was pissed too, I was like 6 It was like a month after playing and I was on like on the 5th dungeon, and bloop! no more Zelda. Good thing Nintendo gave me a new one!

The LEGEND OF ZELDA carts always had battery problems. I think Nintendo addressed this at one point. My original copy of it would lose the saved data if I pressed the RESET button at all, even if I was holding RESET while turning the POWER off (as said to do so by Nintendo). However, the data wasn't lost if I just hit the POWER button and that's it. So for many of my batter back-up games, I never held the RESET button. Some I did, mostly RPG's. But games like Tecmo Super Bowl? No RESET.

I wasn't aware of different versions. Did they do the change over around the time they changed the Nintendo Seal of Quality from that circle to the oval?

I have both versions and on both it only saves if I hold the reset button. Most odd.

If I'm not mistaken, there is another battery backup game Nintendo released that had a similar variation... is it Link? Dragon Warrior? Star Tropics?

Hum, two versions of SMB3? I got the game for Christmas the year it came out, so I wonder if that was time to get the fixed version......the version I played first was a rental copy on the first week, though, so that much have been the original run.

Is there a list of all these variations online or something... I wanna sell my nes duplicates and I just wanna make sure they are indeed duplicates!

Is there any way to tell these variations apart?

Yes. Go to the square on teh first level where you have to match up a picture of a mushroom, star, or fire flower. Toad will say different things depending on what version the game is.

The older version kept the cooler sounding japanese level names in the ending, too ;p

Is there any way to tell the difference by opening up the cartridge and looking at the innards?

All these years and I never knew about this. Huh. That's pretty interesting to say the least.
