... So, today, I picked up a board game collection for the PSP, and I'm actually enjoying it.

It makes me wonder: Does anyone else think that digital renditions of classic board games sometimes get the shaft from gamers? It seems like gamers don't consider these to be "real games" or whatever. But I dunno, sometimes I find these better than "real" games. No strategy game can match Go, for instance.

Now to finish with questions:

1. Anyone know a good and comprehensive card game collection? Any platform? (I'd like these just to know the rules--it would make it easier to understand old James Bond movies)

2. Anyone who plays Go, what's the best video game incarnation you've played?

3. Overall, any favorite or nostalgic video game board/card games you'd like to talk about?

Actually I really do like some card and board game compilations. Just recently I bought Ultimate Card Games as well as Uno/Skip Bo for the GBA. Both are really well done with good computer AI.

In years past with the PC, I think the best collection of card games is probably Hoyle, who also make board and puzzle game collections which are also very good. I'm sure they're still making yearly versions today. I think I still have some of the older Bicycle PC games like Euchre and Solitaire that I've found in thrift stores or yard sales. Before we had the internet, some of these board and card game collections got a lot of play in our house and I still think these kind of games are great to play now and then.

I don't subscribe to the belief that these aren't real games to some gamers. Anyone who would think so is narrow minded in their definition of what gaming is. Casual games like these are still popular

I'm not too familiar with "Go" but its like Othello correct? My wife likes those games but its not my thing. I have the original Othello on the 2600 but I don't really play it.

Only in that it has black and white pieces and its played on a board.

Goldeneye 007 for the N64 BABEEEE!! No, no takers?.... Damn. Ohhhh, you said card games. Well that would be Sega Casino, exclusively for the, DAH-DAH DAH-DAH(James Bond trumpet solo), Nintendo DS. You get Craps, Roullette, and Baccarat (regular and 7-card stud) along with some others. That will get you your James Bond fix, just don't have too many martinis, shaken-not-stirred of course, or you might look like Daniel Craig's poisoned @$$ stumbling out of the Casino Royale!! @_@
Seriously though, 50 Classic Games for the DS is fine for your non-MI6-type players. Also, as cheap and frustrating as the AI can be, I loved Casino Kid for the NES when I was a kid. Save often though, you'll lose a lot more than you'll win. I did beat the Casino King with a royal straight flush when I was a kid, though. I STILL wish that photo would have turned out! These days you can keep hitting it with a digital camera until you get a clear, glare-free shot. Back then you had to take like 6 shots out of a 27-shot roll of 110 film and hope that ONE of them came out looking alright. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! I'M SCARRED FOR LIFE! Ok, not really, but it does still suck; last hand, million bucks, royal straight, NO PROOF. On second thought, screw Casino Kid. :onfire: Now if I want that level of frustration, I just play Slime Bingo or the slot machines on Dragon Warrior VIII. I still have to save a lot, but at least I get to buy Jessica a Gingham Whip after getting once-in-a-lifetime lucky like TEN TIMES! Man, either I'm a glutton for punishment, or just plain stupid. I think I'll go play some Dark Souls to cool down...buh-bye!!

I thought this was gonna be about real board games. I have a pretty good collection of 70's board games. King Oil, Lost Gold, Donkey Kong, Pacman, Cadaco's NBA Bas-ket, Jim Prentice's Electric Baseball from the late 50's., Skittles, etc.

I have a good size closet full of just board games.

I forgot about this but Nolan Bushnell got the name "Atari" from the game "Go"

I think most people dont care for them, like a ton of people (like myself) who dont get why sports games are so popular. Just save money on the electricity bill and play the physical real thing with your friends.

A lot of people only enjoy playing board games or card games with other people, playing them by yourself isn't as fun so these people only play other games instead.

I still play video game versions of these games occasionally, Monopoly or Risk are ok to play every so often. I've played a video game version of Stratego as well, and of course Battle Chess is still a fun chess program to play.

I've got friends who are HUGE sports fans that don't get why video games are so popular. You learn to respect that others don't necessarily think the same way you do.

BTW, I'm a video game sports fan, have been for 30+ years, and its because they're fun. Just like, to me, some video board and card games are fun.

However I don't get people who love FPS's, RPG's, or hack and slash action games. To me they're a waste of electricity. Go outside and play some soccer instead.

On the flip side though, sometimes your friends aren't available or they don't understand/aren't willing to learn the game.

Sid Meier said it best: "The whole point of a video game is that you don't need another player."
