"It's given people a lot of hope," Hamm said, referring to this thread on the Nintendo Age forums (which is either the site crashed or the thread was removed, the link doesn't work anymore. "People say that they never find anything at their Goodwill, well, the holy grail has been found there."

Unlikely. Finds like this happen every once in a while in video game collecting and every other pop culture hobby. It gets a little bit of press attention and then it fades. Some people might come into the market temporarily, never find anything particularly valuable and then they will go away again. It's a cycle and nothing to worry about.

I say good for her for finding it.
I wonder how the game got there, since it's in nearly perfect condition and complete I wonder if the owner passed away and his relatives donated it. I have to believe someone who held on to the game for that long and in that condition knew what it was worth and would not have just handed it over after nearly thirty years.

I'm not too worried about the effect that this or any other story will have on thrift store finds. They're already pretty well picked over, but persistence pays off now and then. I don't expect to ever find something as crazy as a complete copy of Stadium Events, but I'm happy with the nice deals I've picked up on occasion. A complete copy of Secret of Monkey Island, a couple copies of The Neverhood, a complete 32X, a 3DO, Gun-Nac, Mars Matrix, etc., all at very cheap prices. I can't complain at all.

Good thing my nearest Goodwill has been worthless for finding cart games.
I only found a few games total, and they were the likes of Jaws for NES, F1 Race for Game Boy and Cruisin' USA.

Hell, it's been pretty impossible to find anything of interest in pretty much every Goodwill I've been to in a decade. All the eBay resellers have seen to that. And it's sadly bled over to all the little indie thrift stores, too. I haven't made a decent find since well into last year, after checking a dirty box of Atari stuff in a flea market and discovering that three of the eight or nine games inside were Commavid titles (the three least rare games out of the six released, but still, pretty awesome to find all in one go).

It's no worse than when Yahoo and other news aggregates pick up on sealed Stadium Events and Air Raid and create a fresh crush of demand on stuff for the 2k monies.
People used to be able to request used games through Game Crazy. We had DP'rs who got Stadium Events through that request system for next to nothing.

This abd the post about this sounding fake now seem to add up. I am thinking this is fake too. Still possible. But would have to be a collector of a bygone era thats been living under a rock from the media to go "hmm this old nintendo game isnt worth anything. I am just gonna donate it to the local goodwill"

Its who ever has ahold of the price gun that day. I've been to a goodwill where i found a ps1 going for 7 bucks for one day. 15 the next and back to 7 a following day.
They dot leave prices alone. They basically gove freedom to who ever has ahold of that thing. I am just waiting for a joke of a mario/duck hunt cart going for a million dollars there

Well, thanks to ebay's new design I'm seeing more what people are asking for SNES games in lots.
People are starting to think everything they have is gold.
Like 3 Looney Tunes cart-only games for $25, 5 random sports games for $40?
Mega Man X is the one that surprises me at the moment, it's selling at $25+ loose now, with some sellers trying to push it to $50. For the first and far more common game.

Sounds fishy to me......who the hell goodwill's a CIB Stadium Events in this day and age? Owner must have died and relatives junked all his shit not realizing the value of certain NES games. Thats the only logical reason I can think of, that or its a make believe story.

Well, like a sucker I walked back into the same Goodwill today.

This is such bullshit.
1. I now sorters that work for the goodwill, and they never let stuff like this through.
2. Sorters are not careful with ANYTHING. There's no way the box made it through processing unscathed.
3. It's goodwill policy to remove plastic wrapping, stickers, previous price tags, and labels from all merchandise before sale.
4. That is NOT a goodwill price tag on the box.
5. My best guess: This guy's store is floundering a little bit, he has a copy of Stadium Events in his collection, and he needs to drum up a little interest in the shop to bring in more business. I'm willing to bet that if business gets good, we'll never see that cart again.

Perhaps that is just exclusive to your Goodwill.
There was a HUGE Goodwill haul out of Wisconsin last summer. All sorts of Near Mint to Mint CIB in original plastic cello (some with previous price tags) from Gameboy and NES. They were priced at $2.99 each.
Long story short, I found a guy over the net who was local to that store. I paid him on average of $10 per CIB so he tripled his money. Unfortunately he was limited by funds on his debit card so he couldn't buy their entire stock of GB CIBs. I wound up with about 80 games total

Another NAer hauled about 100 GB CIBs himself

And I don't have the auctions, but there were at least a few other games that made their way to eBay. On NES I remember Flintstones 2, Wayne's World specifically, those were the only two I bid on. F2 went for about $2k and Wayne's went for about $300.... yes they both sold at $2.99 at Goodwill.
Goodwill finds still do happen and this is not the first time that MINT NES games have come out of one.

This just hit yahoo headlines.
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/woman-buys-video-game-could-worth-15-000-220621476.html
Sadly this is going to inflate prices. Which is why I'm happy I'm a gamer and not a collector. I would never put a shitty ass game like stadium events in my collection. I would sell it in a heartbeat for profit.
The person who found it knew what she had when she found it. You can tell from reading the yahoo comments more people are aware of the value of video games even if they are casual gamers.
You don't need to be a active member on a hardcore video game forum to have the video game knowledge. Between Pat taking his to pawn stars and now this will only inflate prices of other rare gems.
Perhaps that is just exclusive to your Goodwill.

It's your theory that is debunked. People like you put in peoples head that just because you or someone you know found a big score like that, that it could happen to anyone. Which is true but not in the sense you make it out to be. Most people will find nothing but commons and waste their time and gas.
It's just like with an expensive antique. Yeah deals are out there for pennies on the dollar but not just anyone is going to stumble across them. You're kind of telling people if they keep checking the end of a rainbow they might find a pot of gold. In reality they won't find anything. On the same premise you can't ever find anything if you don't look.
To me your examples are of false hope for the average person.

I'm assuming your drug use has rendered your ability to read and to use reason ineffective. He posted his find and those of other collectors as proof that just because this item was purportedly found in relatively nice condition and complete that it doesn't mean it was a made up story. He made no statements telling people they should all start searching their local thrifts or that they were likely to find anything. Do you really think anyone here needs your advice on how to use their time, money and gasoline? Every post you make is an attack on how others choose to live or collect. Nobody cares, so stop wasting your time and ours with your unintelligent and worthless posts.

I know some video game hunters that spend more time and gas money then they find games. Half the reason they do it is because they enjoy the hunt of course. The other half comes from false hopes that they will score a stadium events or a treasure chest full on 1st part NES games factory sealed. That's not everyone though. Some people actually just want to get good deals on basic common stuff. The others who live in a fantasy land think every time they visit a flea market or thirft store that they will find a copy of earthbound in a dollar bin.

Fair enough. Incredible finds DO happen, and I've occasionally snagged a few of my own, but the frequency in which they happen is negligible. I wouldn't call my "theory" (you should really buy a dictionary) debunked. The vast majority of anything you find at the goodwill (re. damn near everything) is garbage.
Regardless, I still call bullshit on this story.
If someone had a copy of Stadium Events and knew what they had, they wouldn't try to sell it to some used video game store. Why would the supposed owner wait for a month before listing it on ebay? Everything just reeks of a store owner trying to drum up some extra business and notoriety by having a fantastic story about his shop and some incredibly rare game. It's just some bullshit story that got dumped into the collector community in order to get some extra customers.

Again, your post is totally irrelevant. These are the four points the guy above made that Jonebone specifically refuted with his find and information about other similar finds:
4. That is NOT a goodwill price tag on the box."
Obviously, the fact that Jonebone found what he did through Goodwill completely refutes #1, #2, and #3. It also makes it clear that #4 doesn't prove or disprove the origin of the alleged Stadium Events find. Jonebone's post had nothing to do with encouraging people to go to Goodwill, it only refuted the unfounded claims that the other poster made.
I don't understand how you read all of this other garbage into Jonebone's post. People can do what they want with their time and money. People do find rare items at thrift stores and garage sales and lots of other places. Does it happen for everyone or every time? Of course not. It doesn't change the fact that people have free will and choice and can decide what they want to do with their time and money. I'm guessing you would prefer that people live their lives by your rules and guidelines, but that sounds like a very depressing and sad world to live in.

My point wasn't to cause people to frequent their Goodwills 24/7 hoping to find deals, it was just to refute your points that it is completely impossible and the story is bogus. It's like winning $1,000,000 on a scratchoff... no one is going to advise you to buy as much scratchoffs as you can possibly afford, but there will always be someone who hits the jackpot by freak luck.
And to further debunk your post...

Before the SE was found, a member got an FFF Athletic World CIB from the same Goodwill at the same price, $7.99. Either he got there after the Stadium Events (but who would buy that and leave the FFFAW?), or the SE went out at another time. I think it can be the second option... on the find I referenced, games were sat out over the course of 3 separate days. The story behind that one was a closing video store that got donated to Goodwill (maybe owner died or something?)
Needless to say, I bet there were a lot of early era titles that came out of this Charlotte Goodwill, possibly Sqoon / Chubby and Black Boxes. From the Wisconsin haul, some made there way to eBay, and I imagine that will happen again here.

That Athletic World isn't near as rare as Stadium Events, I don't know why that version suddenly became super valuable. I could have bought that same version complete with the same box for $10 at a game store, but didn't because I didn't want it for myself and it was only worth around that much at the time. I'm assuming the price spiked because of Nintendo Age.
I don't doubt that Stadium Events was found there, I just don't get why people make a big deal about that Athletic World even with that box.

Well most of you guys live in the magic goodwill land, cause all the stores around me are full of musty furniture, VCRs, Hawaiian Shirts, and absolutely not a single video game. I go once a week or more since the store is right next to my work, nothing good has ever come from this goodwill.
Same here, I have NEVER seen a single video game at any of the local Goodwill stores by me. I don't go to any of them anymore after it proved to be a complete waste of time.
