What I am about to describe actually happened to me tonight. It wasn't a ghost, or a curse, or a drowned child. Just an accidental cartridge tilt.

The most fucking terrifying accidental cartridge tilt I've ever witnessed in my life.

I was playing Inspector Gadget for the Super Nintendo. Fun game - one part ghosts n goblins and two parts castlevania. I had reached the castle section of level 1 without taking a single hit, doing pretty well. I went to hit one of the deer heads that fall on you.

The screen went black, and the game went silent.

I thought, "aw man, the cartridge tilted".

I stared at it for a few seconds, then went to turn it off and remove the ga-

SUDDENLY, glitchy static shot all over the screen, the game started playing the level music again, and a thumping sound effect looped infinitely.

I literally fucking jumped.

I tried purposefully tilting soon after the shock, and it was even WORSE. Corrupted backgrounds stuck, the (I'm assuming to be) final boss theme played, and a groaning sound randomly played through.

That being said...anyone else ever experience a horrifying accidental tilt? ^_^

You might want to adjust those pins on the cartridge slot. "Cartridge tilt" is not a part of normal operation and should only happen if you rock the cart back and forth or subject it to some other stupid abuse.

There's a supposed glitch for shin megami tensei for the super famicom where the screen goes red and says "turn it off turn it off turn it off" in japanese repeatedly all over the screen. That game is creepy enough without this.

Also, I find the Ecco the dolphin games creepy as shit. Whenever any of those crash or glitch i get freaked out. The possibility of drowning and the creepy aliens just get to me.

There's a really great pc game out called Anna that's the scariest game I've ever played. I can't tell if its intentional or not, but sometimes the physics engine goes berserk and objects will slide loudly across the floor. I damn near piss myself when it happens sometimes. Having surround sound makes it that much worse.

Are you talking about tilt as in the cartridge is not seated in the console properly, or are you applying the pinball term to video games? (more commonly known as "crashing")

I'm talking about any kind of unintentional (and surprising/shocking) game crash, be it from tilt or not.

"Cartridge tilt"? o_O I can't say I've ever heard that kind of terminology before. I know about tilting on pinball machines, of course, but for video games, I've only ever heard of crashing, freezing, glitching out, etc. Is this some kind of regional thing or something?

Yeah that. I've never seen it myself with my cartridge, and I'd heard it was a fake. Pretty good one though. Damn that intro is amazing. Too bad that games a bit obtuse in design. Even with an English patch its tough to play.

I used to tilt Sonic Spinball for Sega Genesis in my old Genesis 1 on purpose because the one time I did it accidentally it produced really cool glitched music. Also, if you cartridge tilt Sonic 3D Blast it will take you straight to the level select screen rather than screwing up the game. I used to do that on purpose before the internet where I found out the actual BARACUDA code.

Also one time when I unplugged a controller and reinserted in my Nintendo 64, it created a cartridge tilt glitch on Super Mario 64. Watch this video I recorded. It's hilarious:

I'm similarly perplexed, especially that others are chiming in and using that terminology without missing a beat.

I've only heard of people saying that about Ocarina of Time, where people would purposely try to partially remove the cart (tilting it) while the game is running to try to force the crash itself into debug mode. (even though I imagine in the long term it's bad for both the game and the console)

I've had many, many games lock up and freeze like that over the years. I don't even think about it anymore other than a brief jump when it happens.

I've personally seen people use it when talking about Goldeneye and the crazy legs thing that became a meme a few years back.
