View Full Version : Revisiting the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES, how often?

So, in all the years since we've had Super Mario Bros. (for me it's been 25 years), how often do you revisit it and give the game a solid play-through? Personally, I try to play and beat Super Mario Bros. at least once every couple of years, but at least once a year I will pop it into my NES and play the game for a little while just to kind of relive the memories I've had with it. I remember when I first got my NES and all the late nights (and early mornings) as a child I spent playing the game and how me and my friends would trade the controller off between Mario and Luigi as we progressed through the levels, it was an absolute blast, memories like that just simply don't exist anymore it would seem. This game was truly magical at the time, and some 25 years later I'm still inclined to play the game every now and then because of it's impact on me and my life.
How about you?

Really? You play the game every single day? Come on....
I plan on playing it this week and trying to beat it, its been a few years since I've beaten it last but I did play it for a few days back in 2012 and try to visit it once it twice a year.
Lately I've been discovering new NES games that I've never had the pleasure of playing back when I was a kid because I didn't own them or rent them.

This. I wasn't even alive during the NES era, so I have been picking up everything and anything worth playing. I have around 50 carts now, and am liking every second of it.

Same here. I recently discovered Mendel Palace, a lost gem on this system. Also, there are a lot of great imports that should have been converted to the US system as well.

I can't think of the last time that I played a full game of Super mario Bros. but I'll bet that it was over 10 years ago.
Wanna know something funny? I never see the cartridge in the wild. I have a copy with Duck Hunt and Track and Field, but it doesn't load.

Once a year earnestly. More sometimes but usually just to play the first few levels.
I suppose its about time for another no warp zone run.

I do it very often. The same thing goes with Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis. Both games are short. Super Mario Bros. with no warps has taken me as little as 20 minutes per quest while Sonic the Hedgehog with all chaos emeralds takes around 30 minutes. I also play through the first quest of The Legend of Zelda frequently which has taken me as little as 80 minutes.

Although i do see them in the wild. I'll more likely find a sports game then that any day. I think the reason for it is the same as super mario world for snes. Theres a bajillion copies out there but since any game collector wants everything mario related the game never turns up or if it does they ask a crazy price.

Super Mario Bros.2 for Famicom was the version that never released originally in the U.S., because it was so much harder! Later it was included on Super Mario all stars for the SNES, but the original for the Famicom was just awesome. Make sure you go through it if you haven't!

Haven't played it since 1988 and don't ever plan to.
If I had to choose a single NES game to play forever, this would be it. I put it in and play through the first couple levels rather frequently. I last played through it earlier this year.

Dude... I play the hell out of Super Mario Bros. On average, since I got back into playing the NES again, I'd say that I beat the game about 30-40 times a year. 75% of the time I warp through the game as quickly as I can, and the the other quarter of the time I savor each level as I play through the game. Sometimes I beat the game twice, back to back. Sometimes I moonwalk via emulation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6V_nz6rGE4) as far as I can through the game. Sometimes I rock my Dream Mary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OewL0VrlxKs&list=UUhgmiFfkflph1J7UdNUi9Mg&index=51) Super Mario/Duck Hunt cart. Once in a blue moon I get in the mood to tear Mario's world asunder with the Game Genie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3VASCMqTfM). There was a period of about two to three weeks where I spent everyday trying to find an exit in the Minus World (http://youtu.be/v7z1fQEuQOQ?t=1m12s) and an end to my existential despair. And do I love Super Mario hacks? F*ck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzmUGZ9tplQ) yeah (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1011/).
So, yeah. I definitely still play Super Mario Bros.

First game is too dull, but its evil brother the sequel I did play the hell out of... until finally I cleared it without deaths/warps. Since then I've only played it maybe two or three times. I still like it; those levels' arrangements are way better than the first game's. :)

I am in agreement with this one. I have a repro of 2j that I enjoy a lot more than the original. But now I usually use my powerpak and play the real fds rom with the correct springboard color rather than the repro version where both kinds of spring boards are red.
The strange level design and not being "too easy" like the first one are what make me like it more. But you must love and master the first game first in order to enjoy this one.

I only beat it after finding out the sort cuts, after that it wasnt hard, unless I didnt do the shortcuts, then it was way too hard. :/ I need to tackle that thing.

I usually sit down and play through it from start to finish every 3 years or so. I just played through it last year.

I admit, my memories of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3 outshine the first title by a large margin and I do prefer them over the original, but I love the original too. When I did my top 100 video games of all-time list this past year I placed Super Mario 2 at #4 and Super Mario 3 at #6. while the original landed at #12, but as you can see all three games ranked exceptionally high on my list. You would all laugh at me if I told you my #3 and #1.....
But yeah, SMB rocks and has supplied me with memories that will never die out with time.

The original NES version? Rarely. Can't remember the last time I played through that one beginning to end. I'd say the vast majority of my playing of that version was done before I hit 10. But Super Mario All-Stars was my very first SNES game, and I played all the games on it to death throughout my preteens and teens. I became so good at them that playing was just a matter of going through the motions, so once I became a collector and started to have a large selection of games, I took a long break from all of those Mario games. It was only last year that I played through each game on All-Stars again.

A few years back, I attempted to beat SMB without using warp zones.
I got all the way to the final level and then got my ass handed to me.
It's weird... for some reason, if I warp then getting past that level is no prob. But if I play the levels straight then I can't defeat that one damn Hammer Bro.

^Edmond Dantes: Fatigue, probably.
I would rank them in this order:
SMB3
SMB2US
SMB2J
SMB
Despite this, I still love the original, and do play it once a year at least. I also have it on GBC and play through it there too as well. It's nice to be able to revisit levels. Oddly enough, I haven't played it on SMB All Stars since I was a kid...18? 19? 20? years ago?

This happens to me as well. It's all about the rhythm.
A friend came over and we played SMW, a game I've beaten more times than any other, and once We started a 2-player game, my whole system was thrown out of whack and I made stupid mistakes left and right.

Because your throwing yourself out of your rhythm and your no longer fresh. Your use to beating the game 10-20 minutes flat and this makes ya play it for alot longer

Yes. I too find World 8 much harder when I reach it without warps. I think one reason that I feel so psychologically "off" when I reach the last world sans warping is that world 7 is kinda tricky and I don't know it like the back of my hand as I do with all the warp route levels, so beating it saps me a bit, stealing my wind and, as everyone has said, throwing my rhythm off.

Which ones come highly recommended?
Personally, I dig the Giabbit Hunting hack, which is equal parts odd and intriguing, and the hack of Hudson's SMB Special is a favorite for its slightly off kilter yet fun design- you can still haul ass through it for the most part, unlike SMB 2j.

So I decided to pop in my copy of SMB and see how far I could get in one run. Made it to World 8-3 (using Warp Zones, since it was more of spur of the moment speed run) but when I lost my last life I had a complete memory fart. You see, I could have SWORE SMB had continues. That if you died you restarted at the first level of whatever World you were on. Apparently that's not the case, and you go back to the title screen and World 1-1.
How could I have possible forgotten that? Its so freaking weird.

You can continue. It's just a secret:
"When your game is over, hold A and press Start on the title screen. This lets you continue from the beginning of the world that you were defeated in. For example, if you died in World 3-3, you'll continue from 3-1."
