View Full Version : Are you a classic/retro gamer only, or do you play modern games too?

Up until recently I've always dabbled in the modern era of games here and there, I have an XBox 360 with about 13 games and I would play a new game and beat it two or three times and then move on to the next and I've owned a Gamecube and an original XBox too. The problem is that my "fun" with these games (and with modern gaming as a whole) has been minimal at best and I always find myself going back to the classics (2600-N64 and everything in-between) and I find that my memories with the games from those era's and my current enjoyment with them outlasts and outshines ANYTHING I've experienced 2001-current. So why continue to pump money into today's market if I'm not enjoying the products? Everything is too gimmicky and realistic anyway and the "fun" was ditched a long time ago in favor of big soundtracks and stunning graphics, so I'm going back to my roots and sticking to classic systems and games only.
My question to you would be how many of you are 100% only retro/classic gamers and deal very little (if not at all) with the current market? I'd really like to see what others on this forum are doing as far as their gaming habits.....

Most of my actual games are retro but I'd say about 50% of my actual playing time is on modern consoles. I have about 70 games or so for my Xbox 360 and only about 20 or so for my PS3.
I appreciate all gaming no matter what era, they each have their own unique charm.

I try to be equal opportunity and play both retro and new games, but I find myself going back to the old stuff way more since I've been having less and less free time recently. Most of the old stuff gets right to the point without long openings, logos, loading screens and opening stories. Hit start and go. I've probably clocked in more playtime on my SNES and Genesis than anything, especially since my currently 89-game genesis library gives me so much to choose from (I only have 22 SNES games due to ninflation, but there's still a decent variety among them).

About 75% of my collection is composed of retro games. I love retro games, but I still do play modern games though my interest in them wanes every year. The Wii U might be my last console. Hopefully PC gaming will get better after this next release of consoles. I just bought a new video card just for Bioshock Infinite and there are a couple of newer PC games that really interest me.

I'm pretty much 100% retro with most of my gaming on the ColecoVision and Atari 26/7800. The only games I play on the 360 are Pac-Man CE DX, Crazy Taxi and Daytona USA.
The last time I was "current" was with the Nintendo DS. I have a Wii, which I use for Skylanders and a few games with my daughter. Otherwise, I am firmly entrenched in PSone and earlier. There are dozens of games I have waiting for me.

I don't think I could ever completely rule out a particular era of gaming, since who knows what the future may bring, but I definitely play older games WAY more than modern games. I actually feel like that's a little out of the norm around here. As much as people collect retro games, it seems like many of our regulars do more actual gaming with new stuff than old stuff.

I'll play either, but for awhile now going back I've put more hours into old stuff from the NES->GBA era. If something fun comes along on 3DS or PS3 and WiiU I'll get it but on the home console front playing it safe and not being creative or interesting has become more normal so I get less, or get it far later when it's dirt cheap not to reward that kind of stuff. I only have so much time playing Mr Mom while working at home so I'll put the time into something I really will get some value out of and at times stuff I can do quick and usually old console carts and handheld games are more suited for shorter play.
The most recent I have played is NSMB on the DS, Skyrim and Tekken x Street Fighter on my PS3.

I'm mainly retro, but the last modern game I played was dodonpachi resurrection. Tonight I just got Gundam Extreme VS so that's about all the modern gaming I do.

Mainly retro, although I do play new games on a tablet device.

I play everything.
When I'm on the road, I'll play retro games on my laptop using MAME, KFusion and ZSNES. I recently purchased the original Fallout to play on my laptop as well.
I mainly play current games on my PS3, PC and 360, but I'll dust off my old home computers and consoles at least once a month to enjoy a classic. I've amassed a pretty decent size library of classic games over the past 30+ years.

Like I said in my opening post, I do own an Xbox 360 and have some games for it and enjoy them to a certain extent but I haven't played my Xbox 360 since maybe February and will probably never really play it again. All of the games I've played since the N64/PS1 era have been just too long and involved and don't suit my taste anymore, it's as if the game companies have forgot how to include actual fun into the games anymore and they gear them toward online play more than anything else. I want to sit down and play a FUN game, nothing more....nothing less. So as of now I'm strictly a retro gamer and plan on focusing my attention to my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, 3DO, Jaguar, PS1, and N64. I truly consider the N64 to be the last real classic gaming machine, everything after that I just didn't enjoy.

While I easily play more retro games than modern myself, I play about 50/50 with my son.

I generally play more modern systems, but not specifically modern games. Many of my more modern systems libraries are full of compilations of older games. Hell, I just got a 3DS as a gift and the only games I have for it are a few VC Gameboy games.

Mainly retro, I do have a Wii and PS3, but a majority of their libraries are old VC stuff on Wii, and PS1 Classics on PSN for PS3 (and Mega Man 9 and 10 for Wiiware). Also have the MK Arcade Kollection for my PS3 so I can legally relive the days of playing the old Mortal Kombat games (though MK 1 and 2 are kinda different on this collection).
My 8 and 16 bit consoles, and my GBA get more play, GBA can play my old games, my DSLite is mainly for my GBA games.

I mostly play retro, with a little bit of modern gaming thrown in here and there. My NES and SNES by far get played the most.

I play about 95% retro. We have a Wii, which is no longer considered current gen I suppose, and my daughter has a DSi XL but those are the most current gaming systems in our house. I play Wii Sports or Mario Kart DS on occasion or my biggest "modern" gaming passion which is Sims 3 on the PC but other than that I'm almost strictly old school when it comes to games and any modern game that I do have an interest in doesn't show up on consoles but IOS devices.
And nothing Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo are doing seems to be changing that for me anytime soon.

Really, I just play whatever I'm interested in (and have access to). Loving old RPGs didn't prevent me from binging on Oblivion a few years back.
For the most part, I enjoy Retro games more because they're easier both to get and to get into, and there's just more that interests me.

70% of my collection is retro (pre-PS2 and not at all including computer games, which comprises only 2% of my total game collection), but I certainly spend 90% of my time playing NES, SNES, Saturn, and PS1. Lately the Wii has been getting more action from Mario Kart Wii with online buddies.

Computer or like game system?
For the price of a new pc you could just buy these classic systems and not emulate.

I have around 50/50 mix of retro and newer games but I spend most of my time on the newer stuff. It seems as though I've become more of a retro collector but modern gamer.

I'm always 1 generation behind.
Meaning I'll get a PS3 a year or 3 after PS4 gets released.

I mostly play modern games, but certainly enjoy retro games as well. It depends on my mood and circumstances. Currently, I'm playing Symphony of the Night on the PSP (via the Dracula X Chronicles game), alternating with Final Fantasy VI's PS1 remake. Before that, it was Luigi's Mansion on the 3DS.
I don't really split modern and retro in my mind -- a good game remains a good game, as long as it's a genre I enjoy. I do have two gaming setups at home: my 32-in HDTV for the Wii, 360, and PS3 (and occasionally the PS2, like when I recently played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II with a friend of mine), while the small CRT TV in the computer room is for the NES, SNES, and Genesis.

75% of my games are old games but in all honesty i havent been playing a damn thing, new or old, lately so i guess for the time being i am not a gamer at all!
i feel bad letting hundreds of game set in boxes but when i get the house i bought in november figured out it'll be better.
still been buying alot of stuff still though, waiting on my FDS to arrive from an overseas auction

I don't play retro much, mostly just collect for it. I mostly play current gen games. I may not go to the next gen though, depends on how digitally focused it all is.

I'm like 90% retro, 10% new stuff. I have a ton of older stuff. If the rumors of the next X-Box are true and it'll require a constant internet connection (which someone else allegedly in the know has said it will) then the retro percentage will get higher, because I won't support a console requiring an internet connection.
I do play a lot of the retro stuff, I'm extremely huge with nostalgia so those older games I have played (which are largely RPGs) have aged well. Some of the action and sidescrolling stuff has not.
