I guess first we'd need to know which ones you've actually played. Going to assume the Super Mario/Mega Man/Castlevania bases are all covered.
Have you played Batman?

I hear Power Blade is decent.

Here's ten that I can think of that you probably haven't played that are oh so worth playing:
Power Blade
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Adventure Island 4
Bucky Ohare
Darkwing Duck
Kickmaster
Kid Nikki
Wizards & Warriors 3
Metal Force
Vice: Project Doom
Bazoo

Clash at Demonhead?

Have you played Faxanadu yet? It's a platformer that has RPG and adventure elements. Kinda Like Zelda II without the top-down map screens between levels, caves and towns.
Also I highly recommend you try to find two Camerica releases:
Big Nose the Caveman
The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy
Big Nose the Caveman acts kind of like a platform shooter where if you get hit you lose your powerups. It is best to practice a lot so you can try to get through the game without getting hit. It makes it a lot easier toward the end. Still it has plenty of enemies to defeat by swinging your club, boss battles at the end of every level and a catchy soundtrack. Avoid its sequel Big Nose Freaks Out which is very bland in comparison and has no background music to keep you interested.
The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy is a platformer that makes you use your brain. You are allowed to carry three items at once and your only defense against enemies is to dodge them. Your goal is to find items scattered throughout the world and figure out where and what to use each item for. You might struggle to start with but as you figure things out you'll get farther and farther through the game each time. It's a very rewarding experience to finally finish the game and memorize what everything is used for.

Going to assume the Super Mario/Mega Man/Castlevania bases are all covered.
And I will do likewise:
Clash at Demonhead: A rather engaging game of unusual charm for a NES platformer that I'm putting it on top of my list to make it stand out. Here is the Happy Video Game Nerd review that does an excellent job of conveying just how special this game is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIgKaTvJFTE
Duck Tales
Adventure Island
Bionic Commando
Metal Storm
Phantom Fighter: One of these days someone is going to try this damn game and thank me for it once they get into the groove of it. It will happen- one day.
Felix the Cat
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
... and what the hell. Here are some B-List games that are worth picking up for cheap just for kicks:
Ninja Kid: It's an early game that is atmospheric and kinda fun.
Kid Kool: Flawed yet strangely compelling.
Also, check out Ninja Senki, a neo-retro platformer that is flippin' sweet. I know it's bnot a NES game but the programmer recommends playing it with a NES controller, so there.
http://vimeo.com/17794020
Rockin' Kats is a really good platformer that is sort of like Bionic Commando (Which is another good game if you have not played it already.).

Kid Nikki is one of many bad Data East NES games.
It isn't amazing but it's not as painful to play as, say, Bad Dudes. Karnov has its merits also, providing you have rapid fire otherwise forget it.

I can't agree with lumping KKid Nikki: Radical Ninja in with the bad DE games. I mean c'mon, it isn't nearly as bad as many other Data East NES games! It stands the test of time MUCH better than the vast majority of their other games on the system!

Thanks! I have all the usual suspects, just didn't feel like listing them. Platformers are my favorite genre so I'm always on the look for new (to me at least) ones that are under the radar.
I did just pick up Kick Master a few weeks ago.
also I'm a huge Mr. Gimmick! fan boy. It's my desert island NES game (assuming there was power on a desert island)

If you have a Famicom or an adapter, I strongly recommend Hi No Tori and Don Doko Don 2.
I also second Darkwing Duck and the awesome Bucky O'Hare.

If he's going to take to the famicom/adapter... I always say 3 Eyes Story ("Mitsume ga Tooru" or 三つ目がとおる)
Some gameplay video... megaman-ish.

Then you can go nuts with all sorts of other famicom games.

Another Famicom/adapter recommendation would be "Goonies", a superior platformer compared to the sequel.

Adventure Island! The game has fun and interesting enemies, it's insanely challenging, and the graphics and music are really kind of cool for an NES game. There are three Adventure Island games on the NES so I'd start with the first, I really do think you'll like it if you haven't tried it already. :)

Nope. Japan only. And a good one to get, too!
Kid Nikki is one of many bad Data East NES games.
Agreed 1000% percent. Maybe I just didn't give it enough of a shakedown, but I bought this on a whim since it was just a couple dollars at the local game store, and I've not been very impressed with it. Decent graphics, though.

also in general, this is a good thread to plug my top 100 NES and Famicom editorial series which I go into depth regarding my personal choices for the best games on the system. Chances are that you'll find many games you probably don't know about here.

It may be a difference of taste but I don't consider that to be a good game, there's so many better games out there that I'd rather play instead.

For an earlier NES title by Data East, it could've been far worse. The graphics in Data East's NES games were always just barely above perfunctory. With that said, all retro gamers owe a small debt to Date East for the laugh they gave us in Ring King when the boxers are being serviced by their corner men.

True, it's not the worst game on the system and I wouldn't consider it to be one of the worst games either. It's more mediocre than horrible, it's just not something I would recommend to someone to buy. I remember playing Side Pocket by Data East for ages on the Gameboy so it's not that I hate Data East either.
Plus there's bad and then there's BAD. It's like movies, I've seen plenty of bad movies made by larger studios. Then I've seen really bad movies, the type you'd expect to see shown on the Cinema Snob. Neither type of bad movies I'd recommend for anyone to see.

Big sprits...yeah, I guess that's about it. It's not hideous to me, at least. The NES has worse. Like other Data East games. It's still not a game I'd recommend folks.

That's not really a platformer, though, but a shmup. Still a nifty little game, except that it's way too easy.

It's fine to call it a bad Data East game when it's originally an Irem title in arcades. ;)
It's not the worst though, and isn't all that bad.

I'm currently playing Kiwi Kraze, while it's a fun game it too is really easy.

I just want to say how awesome Kick Master is and recommend beating it. I know that it has been recommended and I know that you recently picked it up. As many collectors and gamers get, I was looking to dig into my collection and find some of the good games that I had overlooked over the years. I beat this with a friend and were pleasantly surprised with it. Totally great action platformer. The game has gone up in price, but still can be found for $20 or less loose.

I got mine for $20 two weeks ago from a local dealer. Plus he was selling Nintendo Power mags for $5 each. I'm not a NP collector but I bought the Ninja Gaiden issue just for the hell of it.

I know it's just too much money but if you ever luck upon it cheap or can trade into it Bonk on the NES is underrated as a pretty fun game, but it is fairly short. I think you can take it down in around 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I have it, traded into it as I would never suggest anyone sane throw $300 at an NES game.
I know you said you had the usual suspects so it's just hard to suggest stuff as I'd amount that to any of those 1st party games and Capcom's stuff from MM to the Disney titles and spinoffs of arcade games by the same name, same with the obvious stuff from Konami like the Castlevania and Turtles trios.
Gargoyle's Quest 2 I think would be a wise one to look at, not too pricy at all (yet, going up though finally) and has some distance and fun to it. Shatterhand, the Power Blade titles, Codename Viper, Journey to Silius, and even goofy tengen namco porting of Rolling Thunder is decent.
