Need a good choice of game to find and I don't know what it is good.

lol they weren't Hu Cards, they were called "Sega My Cards" and then called "Sega Cards". Actually, since they were introduced in 1986, they predate the PC Engine.
Anyway, sorry to disappoint you but there isn't a single game worth owning on Sega Cards. The only ones that come close are My Hero or Transbot, but those are maybe 6/10 at best. It's a cool-on-paper concept, but the limited size coupled with Sega's lackluster library when the format was feasible meant it was doomed from the get-go.

To answer the OPs question... Ghost House. I used to rent that game all the time. Its not amazing, or a system seller by any means, but its a fun and charming, albiet repetative arcade game.

My Hero is in my top 5 SMS games. A very solid port of the arcade version and a soundtrack that just won't fucking quit.
If you only buy one card, that's the one to buy.
I CHALLENGE you to listen to the main game song and not get it stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Yeah, I wasn't going to say anything because I actually have my eye on My Hero right now on eBay. I did figure, however, that Frankie was going to take up for My Hero. The game is fun, charming, and, as mentioned, has a sweet little tune rocking through the first stage. I can't speak for Satoshi, but this game is definitely my cup of tea. Wait a day or so before you bid on it, bigbacon, providing you decide to grab it.
I just picked up a Power Converter at the flea market as chance would have it so that means Wonderboy, Shinobi, and, of course, My Hero are making their way to my home through the U.S. Postal Service right off the rip.

Yeah as mentioned, My Hero, Teddy Boy, Transbot and a few others are alright, but these are very simplistic games even for NES/SMS standards. You can kind of think of them as the Sega equivalent of the meh entries of the NES black box launch games like Baseball or Tennis or Pinball. What you get isn't awful, but also isn't great.

there are quite a few My Card games left in Japan which are quite enjoyable if you can appreciate mid/early 80's style gaming
here are some I own:
Bank Panic
Bomb Jack
C-SO!
Champion Billiards
Champion Boxing
Champion Ice Hockey
Championship Lode Runner
Chack 'n' Pop
Choplifter
Elevator Action
H.E.R.O.
Monaco GP
Pit Pot the Magical Castle
Pitfall II The Lost Caverns
Soukoban
Star Force
Super Tank
Woody Pop: Shinjinrui no Block Kuzushi
Zoom 909
Champion Billiards is an excellent game of pool by Compile, the music is surprisingly good for the era ~ but of course Compile has always been known for their excellent compositions
Choplifter is a great version of that game, and very enjoyable
Champion Boxing is rather good and quite unique
Woody Pop is one of my favorite ball&paddle/block games, and controls fantastically with the paddle controller
Star Force is pretty good
Elevator Action is fun
C-So! is a neat action game from Compile
Bomb Jack is very good
the only games I listed above which I don't enjoy are Load Runner and Soukoban
And it should be noted, these were introduced in 1985 along with the Hudson Bee Card for MSX computers.

Aren't the Card games that were left in Japan for the SG-1000 Mark II? That would explain why they are so primitive/awful.
Koa Zo
05-14-2013, 02:45 PM
Yes most all of the My Card games were first released for SG-1000 compatible systems.
A couple later ones like Woody Pop are strictly Mark III compatible.
Calling them all "awful" is rather ignorant and unfairly dismissive. These games were designed in 1985, if you can't appreciate them in that context, and for the simple straight forward challenges they offer then that's fine, but awful as a blanket statement is almost juvenile.

You heard wrong, it's spectacular. You are correct about the Genesis + Power Base Converter incompatibility however. The reason for that is F-16 Fighting Falcon has so much advanced programming, incredible graphics, and realism that it pushed the format to its very limit. You have to own the original hardware to experience this flagship title of the 8 bit era.

It's a port of SEGA's arcade version.
While the 2600 game is an absolutely spectacular piece of 2600 software, the arcade game is a hell of a lot of fun.
I only wish the SMS/SG-1000 version didn't skimp on the graphical detail of the arcade. The Sega home version is n odd hybrid of the arcade and Atari versions.

Yeah, fair enough. More accurately, the sega card games are awfully aged.
Thing is, that I like the Master System. A lot, in fact. Even so, none of the games on the card format stand the test of time in the same way many of the cartridge games do. I compare the Sega card games to the more forgettable entries in the NES black box series like Urban Champion or Baseball, and I think it's an apt comparison. Games like Urban Champion are equally as awfully aged for the NES and just as unrecommended.
The games on the card format unfortunately just don't amount to anything better than that level of quality overall. My Hero and Transbot are about the best on the format, but even those pale in comparison to the library available on cartridge. This thread is someone asking which ones are worth buying, and really, none of them are worth buying. It's a failed format for a reason. The best use of the card slot is for the Sega 3D glasses, not any actual Sega card games.

tg16 is easy to use. yet very limited in that state, rf video plus a small game library.
best thing you can do is plan ahead smartly. find the most cost effective way to run cds and turn its rgb video into useful form.

You can't use the NES adapter, you shouldn't use one of these on anything other than the NES. I'm pretty sure the Genesis model 1 adapter will work on it though.
I personally wouldn't bother buying a system untested without cords for $15, when a system is missing parts there's more of a chance it's not working right. More like $5 for a bare console would be better, if it doesn't work you can sell it for parts without losing anything.

So what's the consensus on Master System control pads? Is bigbacon's controller in need of retirement or are all Master System control pads hell to play with? I just bought a Power Base Converter, which I'm using a 6 button on, and I don't recall from the one time I played a Sega Master System in my childhood if the d-pad sucked or not. Honestly, I'm probably buying one or two anyway, but I'd still kinda like to know what to expect.

I find the SMS controllers just unusable because of the dpads shape. playing something like fantasy zone, where you have some freedom of movement and it becomes very problematic to me. If you aren't dead on you'll end up going diagonal. Both of my SMS controllers are like that, as is the joystick thing I have when it wants to work.
I cleaned my genesis controller this morning cause the buttons were stickings and everything was so much more playable.
As for my Hero, hard as hell. Can't get past hte first level, and the song will never leave your head.

Yeah, I personally enjoy the SMS controller. Except for a few games--I found Golvellius to be wonky with it, so I use genesis for that. In general, though, my hands tend to like the SMS buttons. I would probably rank it above the original NES controller (!) but below the dogbone controller.

Yes, all of them. and they are all removable. I believe its only the player 1 controller though. The Competition Pro controller is the best for the system, only released in Europe (all Euro released games and accesories will work in a US sytem, except for Jungle Book and Back to the Future III).

I've been playing a little My Hero here and there as I recover from a nasty ear infection, and I am up to level 3, and I too know the pain of those damn spitting frogs. There is some spot in the 3rd level where a team of two frogs keep me from going any further. I wish you could kill those bastards as they have a strange hit bubble around them that I struggle to jump over and avoid.

I agree. In addition to a pixel perfect arcade port I'd like to see a sequel that maintains all of the original play mechanics and just adds new levels and enemies ala SMB 2 Japan. For the record, I would not complain about the addition or option of a life bar. As long as I'm fantasizing, a Kung Fu Master/My Hero crossover would be cool.

Not on the Master System. Unless there's 1986 or later My Card games with western-style header.
Genesis removed that check and should run anything full Mark III mode.
Be careful here, since there's some fuzziness about whether we're talking about SG-1000 cards or Mark III/SMS cards. Just to be clear, none of the SG-1000 games will run on the Genesis, because it doesn't support the TMS9918 video modes. You'll get a black screen with game sounds, but no video.
The same is true of F-16 Fighting Falcon, and a handful of unlicensed and/or Korean SMS titles (mostly MSX ports) that also used those modes.
In addition, all the SG-1000 games have incorrect colors (too dark) on Mark III/SMS hardware. Some games aren't harmed too much, and I believe some others were adjusted for the new palette, but a few SG-1000 games are borderline unplayable on SMS/Mark III because of it.
BTW the SG-1000 is basically a ColecoVision in all but name (the BIOS is the only major difference, plus the controllers obviously), and various people have been busily porting the SG-1000 library to CV. Other than buying a Dima 2-in-1, or using a Game Gear with a flashcart that sets up the right palette, that's the only way to experience SG-1000 games with the correct colors on US-released hardware.
I like the SG-1000 a lot, and in some ways I prefer the "feel" of its library to the ColecoVision's. I translated a couple games for it, which was fun, and other people have translated Black Onyx and Sokoban. There are only 5-6 games left that have any Japanese at all, and of those, only one requires the language IIRC (Loretta no Shouzou: Sherlock Holmes).

Yes, all of them. and they are all removable. I believe its only the player 1 controller though.
No, it wasn't all of them. I had two SMSes (first one broke and got a replacement as it was still in warranty) and neither had any such thing on the d-pad of the controllers.
Also, there was no "player 1 controller" there were two completely interchangeable controllers.
I'm not saying no SMS controllers ever had such a thing, I'm just saying they didn't all have them. I believe it was only on early ones, probably phased out when they moved the cord from the side to the top of the controller. Definitely gone by Christmas 87, since that's when I got my first one.
They do suck, a lot. I found Double Dragon and Rampage to be unplayable with them.
Never played SMS Rampage, but never had a problem playing Double Dragon with the SMS pads.

I would definitely use a Genesis controller over an SMS one, BUT there are a few games like Alien Syndrome that just freak out at the Gen controller and won't work right, so you should keep one around for those. It's definitely a weird D-pad, but not so bad that I ever found it hindering my game playing.
I also had a Control Stick, now that was a bit weird, what with the buttons on the left instead of the right. That took a lot of getting used to after using an Advantage on my NES. The big square block on the tip of the stick (instead of a ball) was also odd. I think it was supposed to look like a gear shift or something. Anyway, sold that along with my SMS (and controllers) when I got a Power Base Converter. Kinda regret that whole deal, but oh well.

You really shouldn't use an NES power supply on a TG, you've been lucky so far.
As for RF for TG, shouldn't be hard to find, any of the RF switches for NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS, etc should work.
