View Full Version : Bought a PS2 with flip top and HD Loader on Craigs List. Can I play PS1 imports?

I searched the forums but all the info seemed old. So I am posing a new thread.

I purchased a PS2 Fat Model on craigs list for $20.00 the other day. It has a flip top and HD Loader 0.8 installed. I also have a copy of swap magic lying around. So I purchased Intelligent Qube Final because I thought swap magic would load this up. But swap magic just says insert a PS2 disc. I thought it worked for PS1 games. I noticed looking online it says you need a USB drive for some ELF tool. When I boot my console up it automatically goes to a ELF screen and I have a bunch of boot options. Like boot from hard drive (which there are a bunch of games installed on), and some more swap magic versions (2 of them), cog load, and a bunch of other stuff. I would think there must be a way to get this Intelligent Qube Final running. Or at least in a perfect world it would..

Am I just doing something wrong?

On a final note (not as important yet), how do I save my PS2 games to the HDD? There is a bunch of crap on there I would love to delete and add my games I own. I'm not really into owning illegal copies of games I don't own anyway so they have to go. I tried to copy a few games and they all just hang and I give up after an hour or so. If I could find a good tutorial just how to use HD Loader not actually install it that may be what I need to get these questions figured out.

No. You will only be able to play your PS1 imports by using some type of swap disc, either a CD-based cheat thing like CB/GS/PAR, or one of the dozens of cheap import player discs for PS1. In other words, the same methods you'd use to play it on a real PS1 machine.

The only way you'll be able to play PS1 imports without some type of swap is to have a genuine mod chip installed. You cannot copy PS1 games to the HDD (unless I'm totally behind the times and that's been figured out).

Avoid HD Loader, it's garbage. Search up Open PS2 Launcher and install it, the compatibility will be worth the effort.

As for the games on the HDD, if you don't want to add/delete using an application on the PS2 side, you can always just remove the HDD and plug it up to your PC. You can manually delete or add ISO files that way.

PS2 does takes a long time to install games. But I don't know much about hanging...

Modchip is required to directly place imports and backups on HDD from the PS2. That you can get around with flip top, slide tool, or PC.

hmmm... well guess i'm going to have to find another option. I guess I will sell my ps2 HDD and the memory card to boot the HDLoader and just keep my swap magic to play fist of the north star.

I guess that leaves me 2 options. Either get a Japanese ps1 which seems cheap, or a Japanese ps3 around the time ps4 comes out. The only issue I have is the ps1 video quality. If I get a Japanese ps3 would there be any benefit to play ps1 games using HDMI? Or should I just go with a ps1 with S-Video?

Which ps1 model is best regular or slim? Can the slim do s-video or component?

Well not much point staying at 40GB. I'd upgrade to a larger HDD. It's worth vast load time improvements.

Maybe your PS2's laser has gotten tired? An idea to look into.

s-video will work. PS1 top video quality is RGB (PS1 and PS2 both support that in the US, just rarely used).
Component was added in PS2.

Or you could get a modded PS1 as those are easier to find than import systems, or use a PS1 with an Action Replay. Japanese PS1s are pretty cheap though.

Or mod the PS2 with a chip.

If you're already fooling with the flip top and disc swap to play FotNS (excellent taste BTW) just spend a few bucks on a PS1 Codebreaker, Game Shark, or Action Replay.

That's cheap or cheaper than an alternate system and you'll have one less thing to hook up.

I use this on my PS1, not sure if it works on PS2. If it does, the price is unbeatable.

PS2 Swap Magic discs do not work for PS1 games.

PS1 Swap Magic discs do not work on PS2.

There are GameShark discs that the PS2 will recognize as legit commercial software, boot to PS1 mode and you can swap out a legit PS1 game for your import before GameShark boots into the game, however you will need a flip lid top for the PS2.

I can't mod a ps2 because I like to use component video and I hear a lot of PS1 games don't support component. And I also do not want to tape down tabs because I hear it's a pain in the butt and can be hard on the system laser.

So I guess my options are ...

1. get a English and a Japanese psone newer model

2. Get a modded English psone

Is there a reputable person or website that still does these mods?

Can you mod the PsOne or just the original ps1?

What is a good psOne mod chip? I would really like to use the slim model ps1 if possible.

ps1 games support component. you're already covered if using an SD CRT. that issue is on the display end, many HDTVs don't accept their video mode from component.

besides nobody forces you to use component with ps2.

Yeah but I like using component on ps2. And I don't have a CRT with component and don't have the desire to buy a bulky CRT. But I do have a CRT with s video. Crts are getting harder to find and are a pain to move around. But they are great for classic gaming.

I've been working with PS2/Swaps for quite a while.

The short answer: yes.

The long answer:

There is a method I've used many times to load other-region PS1 games. It'll work for burned games, too, if there's something ridiculously expensive you want to give a go without emptying your wallet like rakugaki showtime or something. I know it works with SPCH-9000x super-slims and most Fat PS2s. It may not work with normal slims and a few fats (some have an extra legitimacy check at a certain part of the PS1 bootup), but it's worth trying. One nice thing about this method is that you'll NEVER have to do a swap while a disc is spinning, so your discs won't be damaged by constant repetition of this method.

Things you will need:

Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8
Magic Switch Pro v4 (probably already installed, have tool a in a position in which you can remove and insert it at will) or Flip Top
A usb drive (used to start Ulaunchelf)
Ulaunchelf - http://psx-scene.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=17135&d=1276376381
A real PS1 game that has a big TOC (table of contents) I suggest a Final Fantasy or A Demo Disc.
An import or burned PS1 game.
Instructions:

Setup

1. Download ulaunchelf, and copy all of the folder's contents into a folder on the root of your usb drive (yes, it's case sensitive) SWAPMAGIC.
2. rename BOOT.elf (Ule's default name) to SWAPMAGIC.elf.
3. Remove your USB stick from your PC and insert it into the ps2
4. Insert your swapmagic DVD into the PS2

Process

1. Start your ps2 and then Swap Magic. With your USB drive in it, Swap Magic should automatically load Ulaunchelf.
2. Once Ulaunchelf is loaded it will give you a few options. Hit select to configure it and turn disc control ON.
3. Exit the configuration menu and your configuration will be saved. On the main screen you will see "STOP DISC=PS2 DVD"
(The Next Three Steps are for Magic Switch mods ONLY. If you've got a fliptop, just physically open the actual drive mechanism (to signal the change of disc), remove your swap magic insert the legit big-toc PS1 game, close it physically (so it will read the disc) THEN fliptop it open and put in your import/backup PS1 game WITHOUT physically opening the drive mechanism.)
4. Remove your swap magic disc and insert your large PS1 original game. Keep the disc cover open.
5. (here's the first tricky part) Your tool A is most likely taped into your PS2. Lift the tape (and mod) and put it back in. Then close the lid. Your PS2 should make some noises and the disc will start and then stop spinning. "STOP DISC=PSX CD or PSX CDDA" based on if you put in a demo disc (CDDA) or normal game (CD).
6. Now, open the lid, remove your PS1 original disc and insert your copy WITHOUT lifting the sensor mod. Now it will not do anything. THIS IS GOOD. Close the lid.
(everything is the same no matter what you're using from here on out)
7. Hit O to go to the filebrowser (this is the default). You should see a lot of devices like CDFS (CD or DVD) MC0, MC1 (Memory Cards) and MASS (USB Drive) Go to the last device, MISC, and hit O. There will be a few commands to choose from. Select PS2DISC (yes, PS2DISC) and hit O once more.

wait a few secs...

..and there's our friend the PS1 logo. From here you're in the clear, you can play the import/backup without a problem. The only games that will not work are the ones that Sony lists as incompatible (like tomba) or games that require switching CDs (like Vib-Ribbon)

You can eventually configure PS2disc to a button for quick ps1 launching, but doing this works well too. Also, (if using Magic Switch Pro v4) you may be replacing the tape on your Tool A from time-to time with inserting and removing, that's normal.

Enjoy the ps1 games! If you've got any issues starting them then reply and I'll try to help ya out.

...or you could just buy a gameshark or PS1 swap magic, but if you want to do it without, there is a way.

NOTE: I did post this tutorial on an emulation-themed site a few years ago under the name "personuser". I've slightly edited it here to compensate for what I've learned over time about the different methods of doing it.

Talk to Ape992. He's a member here on this very forum and he knows a lot about this stuff. I seem to recall he had some modded PSOnes cheap...

Holy bajeesus that's a lot of work!

I just use my flip-lid PS2 and this for booting other-region (non-PAL) PS1 stuff:

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/GameShark-2-V2-Code-Archive-Disc-PS1-PlayStation1-Video-Game-Enhancer-US-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/87MAAOxyzHxRSlNR/$T2eC16VHJGkE9no8h,%28zBRSlNQo%28o!~~60_35.JPG

Load Gameshark 2 V2, get to the point where it ejects and accepts PS1 game, insert US region PS1 game with large TOC.

When PS1 game disc stops spinning, pop flip top lid and swap out for import game.
