View Full Version : What is you favorite Nintendo console
seems like there have been alot of cross threads between NA and here lately. But I thought I'd post this one over here. What Nintendo console is your favorite and why? Mine is the NES, I never owned a SNES (I had a Genesis), but was sort of taken aback by all the votes for SNES as everyone's favorite. I will disclose I'm not much of an RPG type of guy which seems to be the reason SNES got so many #1 votes. What do you think?
I almost feel that I need to drop the NES for right now and buy me an SNES.

That's a really close call for me between the NES and the SNES. In the end I would have to say that the NES wins out. I love both but there are just more games on the NES that I love and the rose colored glasses of nostalgia are pretty strong with the NES. It's the system that got me hooked on video games. Even though I didn't have one growing up, all my friends did and we all played a lot of the NES.

For me the #1 Nintendo console will always be the Nintendo Entertainment System. I have had more fond memories of the NES than any other gaming console in history and I will always cherish the time I've spent (and still spend) with the NES, nothing could ever come close for me. With that said, I do love the SNES and N64 as well, I've had fond Gameboy and GBA memories too, but the NES will always shine the brightest for me and I will always hold it in such a high regard.

I did notice on the age repsonse thread at NA, many of the posters are in their 20's, so they were somewhat removed from the time period. Not saying their opinion is not valid, it just might help explain why there were so many votes for the SNES

Exactly, the SNES was their NES. They grew up with it and it was their first console, so it's what they remember strongest. I probably explains why I don't feel nearly as strong about the older Atari consoles. I just didn't know them as a kid so I don't have the love of nostalgia for them.

I'm 34. I remember the Atari somewhat. Like going over to my cousins house and playing Pit Fall, Combat, etc. But when the NES hit it was like a pop culture phenomina that i guess you wouldn't understand unless you lived in that time period. I guess I was at that perfect age when the NES came on the scene.

For me it's the NES. I got one for my birthday in '86 and played the bejeezus out of it! We were pretty poor so I was amazed that I got it. So from a collectibility/nostalgia standpoint, that's my favorite Nintendo console. From an adult perspective I really love the Gamecube, too. I like the small disc format, the Gameboy add-on device, and the excellent exclusives like Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime and the Resident Evil/Metal Gear remakes. And it was the underdog console for its generation, never getting the attention and praise that Sony & Microsoft's machines did.

The SNES for me, but the NES comes damn close. The RPGs really do it for me. Also, despite some easier games, I felt that platformers and shmups on the SNES were about the same as the NES. but more polished. I will say that I tend to like the end of the NES better than the start of the SNES, Castlevania III > Castlevania IV, Super Mario Bros 3 > Super Mario Bros 4, but as time progressed, the SNES really started to shine, with Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Mega Man X being at the very top of their series. Then include Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, and the emergence of the excellent action-RPG genre, bringing favorites like Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Secret of Mana (lucky Europe and Japan also got Terranigma).
So, all in all, the SNES was just a souped-up NES with tons more RPGs and fighting games. That's why I favor it over the NES.

Famicom/NES, for sure.
When I was growing up, I didn't own an NES, but I was pretty lucky I guess - between me and my brother we had both a Genesis and an SNES. Those were the systems I grew up on. and GameBoy. It wasn't until years and years later until I was almost 20 that I bought an NES and was able to experience Super Mario Bros. 3, Megaman 3 and a great many others. I fell in love, learned about the Famicom, and really got going with my 8-bit love affair.
The SNES is dear to me as much of its library is so nostalgic to me due to playing those games in my formative years and it does have many of the best games of all time without a doubt, but for me, it'll always be Super Mario Bros 3 before Super Mario World, Megaman 2 before Megaman X, Metroid before Super Metroid. The SNES is really just the easy answer because "ooooo pretty".

Same here. The only people I knew that had one were my cousins and we saw them pretty infrequently. I recall very few games that stood out for me. Games like Q Bert, Pitfall, and Frogger. I really need to jump on YouTube and get an idea of what games I would want. A friend of mine is selling a 2600 with a lot of games and I'm somewhat tempted to buy it.

SNES > NES > N64 > I don't really give a damn to rank the rest :P
The NES turned me into a gamer, I have lots of nostalgia for it, and there are boatloads of games I love for it, but I like the SNES just a slight bit more. The SNES came into my life around '93 when I was 11, and while I had an N64 by 14, those tail end years of the SNES were some of the most exciting years in gaming ever for me. While I got a couple so-so games here and there, it seemed like almost every game I was getting was absolutely amazing. Super Mario All-Stars, all three Donkey Kong Country games, Kirby Super Star, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Lufia II, Harvest Moon, etc. It's just ridiculous how good gaming was then, and there were plenty more fantastic games coming out beyond what I had gotten. Later on I was able to acquire the early games I missed out on too and discovered even more to love, with games like Secret of Mana, Castlevania IV, and ActRaiser, and when I started importing, the likes of Star Ocean and Marvelous blew me away. Even though I missed out on some years of the SNES, I'm kind of glad I jumped in when I did, because looking back at the history of the SNES, there was definitely a distinctive slump around '92 or so. I think I joined the ranks of SNES fans right as the system was experiencing a grand revival, this sort of second wind, and I really savored every second of it, especially because my approach to gaming had completely changed, as I became serious about the hobby and got informed and excited about what was to come, when I had been pretty oblivious previously and just picked up games at random at the store based on what the packaging looked like and said.
Game Cube, followed by Game Boy (for playing in flight)
NES wasn't really that good, we all moved on to Amigas by then, and NES was like 'what you wannna play this old 8-bit stuff for?'

1. NES

4. N64
5. Gameboy
Don't have Wii or any of the DS derivatives. I got my NES Control Deck set for Christmas 1985 and it changed everything.

Kind of a toss up with NES and the SNES. The first I had as a kid, the other came out when I was a teen (14.) If I thought farther back in time the NES was the favored one due to the kid aspect, but in the big picture I think the SNES edges it out just by a tiny margin. The SNES gave us most the other cherished mascots the NES didn't give us. It took so many franchises started on the 8bit era and refined them into platforming genius where the gameplay is still solid today and the hardware was advanced enough it still looks and sounds more than acceptable thanks to both the GBA and basic smart phone type games of a similar appearing and audio nature too. I'm not saying the NES is dated by any means just that the SNES took what it has and refined it well.

Like I said earlier, the NES wins for me by a landslide but I really have grown into loving the SNES even more now than I did back when I originally owned one back in 1993-1998. I'm discovering new SNES titles almost monthly and am enjoying playing these games with friends, especially 2-player titles where I can co-op with others. It's an absolute blast. After the N64 I couldn't care less about any system, but the N64 is an absolute distant 3rd for me because aside from Mario, Zelda, Goldeneye, Banjo, and the WWF Wrestling titles there was nothing much I truly loved about the N64. But those titles that I mentioned I absolutely adored and couldn't live without. Funny how that works......
I guess the GBA came after the N64 so you can count that as a console I suppose, I loved the Golden Sun titles for the GBA as well as the Metroid games they put out and a few other gems that saw release. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario vs Donkey Kong come to mind.

Hands down the NES for me. I can remember saving my money as a kid to get one, and when I did have enough. I went to the store and left with a NES that came with everything, and a few games also. I got Commando, and Metroid. Also with what came with the NES. Now for the why part.. Good old school gaming at its best, and brings back so many memories..

Super Nintendo for me, without a doubt. It's not just my favorite Nintendo console, but overall as well. If it were one of those 'desert island' scenarios and I could only take one console and the games I owned for it, SNES would be the one. Why? I love more games on this console more than any other console, though the Dreamcast and PS1 come pretty close. If I could choose just one console's library, it would be SNES.

Probably Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. I kind of missed the NES era so I'm not as familiar with it as I am with the SNES. But SNES is probably the console I play/emulate the most nowadays, and it was also my first game console. I also have three of them now (SNS-001, Retro Duo, and FC-16 Go).

Has to be the SNES/SFC for me. It is still the console I play the most. I have fond memories from various different systems, from the Atari 2600, Vectrex, PC Engine all the way to the the Game Cube and Dreamcast. But as for Nintendo systems that still pick my interest today as a gamer, it has to be the SNES/SFC, hands down :D

For me it is easily the N64. It was the first console I ever owned myself, we had an NES and a Genesis growing up but they were the entire family's so we all had to share them. The N64 was just mine and that was when I really dug into video gaming in general. I played Goldeneye and Zelda OoT for hours on end getting every single cheat, items, etc... for both games not to mention all the other games I owned.
This was also the time I turned 16 and got my first job and car so I was able to go out and buy the games I wanted on my own as I saw fit. I buy a ton more games now days but miss those days as I would research the games I wanted to death and get my excitement up until the point I bought them.

I'm going to say N64 for two reasons: 1) never had or has gaming been more of a social endeavor thanks to standard four controller ports & 2) my first home console, still have my original, plus a small handful of games.
Grew up playing NES and GameBoy and still have many fond memories. While I was more of a Genesis gamer, the SNES has a solid line up of games. Still going to stick to N64.

Interestingly enough my first two consoles were an Atari 2600 and 7800. And although I had them as a kid I could care less about either of them today, to the point where I don't currently collect or play either. Once the Nes arrived I found out what real gaming was. And thats why not only is the Nes my favorite Nintendo console but also one of my top 3 systems of all time. I have so many fond memories of playing co-op with friends in Contra, Life Force, the sports games and also playing the harder games myself such as Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 and TMNT. Hm, out of the ~2000 for Famicom/NES the bad games -good games ratio is really leaning more towards the bad games. Lot's of garbage.
I was talking to some young NES fan way back, he said that on the NES he played the usual Mario, Zelda, few more platformers and his mother used to rent NES games from Blockbusters,
and they were tried out only find out that they were garbage, to be put back on the kitchen table for mother to return to BB, and back we went playing Mario, Zelda, Metroid.....

SNES for me. I'm 38 and started gaming in the late 70's so I was definitely around during the NES' glory days, but I enjoyed the SNES much more. It doesn't have anything to do with RPGs; I don't think I've ever played an RPG on the SNES, actually. I just like the games a lot more. I was more of a Master System gamer when the NES dominated. I don't even know if the NES is my second favorite. It might be the Wii (since the early units are backward compatible with the Gamecube).
Actually, no. I like the Gamecube better than the Wii because of the Game Boy Player.

I thought about it for a bit and originally came to my decision of the NES being my favorite, but then as soon as I hit submit I had that tinge of guilt that I chose one over the other, since while the NES has more enjoyable platformers, the SNES has more RPGs I like and still a lot of good platformers, including the entire Super Mario Bros series and Ninja Gaiden series.
I guess I'd say SNES does have the slight edge over the NES as I'm an RPG fan and a platforming fan and there's so many more RPG and action RPGs on the SNES that I like than the few on the NES and it's still got a lot of its own great platformers, but the NES is a close runner up.
Overall though I think the GBA is better than both though, even if it's not my favorite. GBA has a much wider variety of games and some genres have better versions of those types. If there was one Nintendo system I'd choose over all others as being the best, then it'd be the GBA, unless of course you counted a hacked Wii or maybe a Wii and Virtual Console.

SNES and NES are on top, very hard to decide which gets the #1 spot. NES I'd have said so for a very long time, but the SNES refined what the NES gifted us in great franchises and genre designs, but then also gave us more or less the rest of what Nintendo IPs had to offer in the SNES period as they've added nothing really since other than Pikmin and eventually the GBA/GC era stuff of ...Wars, Fire Emblem, and Custom Robo. If you throw in the third party stuff same story really too as well. SNES stuff also thanks to the GBA/DS(non-3D) and tablet gaming stuff along with the 'indie' retro stuff still looks and sounds normal and relevant, not dated which says heaps since it came out in 1991.
Aside from that I guess in order I'd probably put it with the Gamecube, Nintendo64, Wii. WiiU gets no rating, too new and it needs games to form opinions. I'm keeping handhelds off that as they're not consoles. :) If one made a handheld topic I'd put GBA on top, GB/C below it much for the same reasoning as the nes/snes and then the 3DS, DS, and VB dead last.

Technically, the Famicom brought us the Fire Emblem and "... Wars" series, and the N64 brought us Custom Robo. And I'd say the N64 was pretty good about introducing new Nintendo franchises. Besides Custom Robo, we also got Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, Animal Crossing, and if we're counting Custom Robo, which wasn't developed by Nintendo themselves, we'd have to count all the new Rare franchises, like Banjo, Conker, Perfect Dark, etc.

I was 10 when the VCS came out. Yeah, it hasn't aged well, but there are a few classics worth checking out like: Yar's Revenge, Pitfall, Hero, Kaboom, Enduro, Space Invaders, Missile Command, River Raid, decathlete and Warlords.
I had a C-64. So I was already experiencing far more involving games on that system when the NES came out. I only bought the NES around 1988, because I wanted to play Super Mario Bros. and Punchout!!! The NES was a cool console, but not anywhere near my top 5 consoles of all-time.
I think the SNES is one hell of a console. It was home to all-time greats like Super Metroid, Starfox, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 3, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart and SMRPG. It's my 3rd favorite gaming platform of all-time and I grew up with every console that existed.
