View Full Version : Phaser Sega Master System games: what is worthwhile?

Recently my flea market adventures brought back a Sega Power Base Converter into my Genesis team. As a fan of NES Zapper games, I'm naturally curious about the Sega Master System's stock of Phaser games. I've read that Gangster Town is fun, and You Tube videos seem to confirm this. What other shooting games are fun or novelty enough to pick up off the Bay?

Rescue Mission and Rambo III for sure.

Gangster Town, hands down. The other SMS phaser games are alright, but nothing comes close to Gangster Town. That game alone is worth picking up a phaser. also, I think the phaser is just cooler looking than the zapper and the trigger is much better as well. I want to track down a spare preferrably non-working phaser and gut it, replacing it with the parts of an NES zapper. a zapper in a phaser shell would be awesome. but that's just me.

Rescue mission is a must. It's really unique. You have to protect an on screen character like like Cheyenne and gumshoe. Laser ghost is cool too. It's like rescue mission but on a grander scale.

Shooting gallery is a really cool game too. I highly recommend it.

Safari hunt Is clever but gets boring in about 10 minutes. Avoid marksman shooting/trap shooting. That game is horribly boring.

sad, I got this game with the SMS bundle I bought 5 months or so ago and I have no CRT TV :( I want to try it now.

Lazer Ghost is sweet, and if you have the 3D Glasses Missle Defense 3D is awesome.

Laser Ghost and Gangster Town are the best ones I played and I have pretty much played them all. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up any light phaser game though because on whole I find the games to be a lot funner than NES light gun games.

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone!

Now I have to decide if I should buy a Phaser outright or if I should wait for an enticing Master System lot with one and a few light guns games to drift across eBay.

Visit your local goodwill or other thrift stores. CRTs are very commonly found in such places. Or look on kijiji (or creig's list if you live in the US) or heck, just drive around on garbage day. Many people throw out perfectly good CRTs.

Wanted is good. Hell, they're all pretty good, and unless you try and pick up the European releases they're all cheap. Even Marksman shooting/trap shooting is ok if you get it for just a couple bucks.

The only ones I really didn't enjoy were Rambo III and Operation Wolf. They might not necessarily be bad games, but they just didn't click with me. Rambo III seemed to be a bit too difficult for the wrong reasons (didn't spend a lot of time with it though) and Operation Wolf just had too much going on at once. All IMO, mind you.

In light of the slim pickings of Master System lots/bundles on eBay, I jumped on a Phaser for like $10. I also snagged Gangster Town separately for dirt cheap. Safari Hunt is already chilling in my collection with Hang On, so I'll have two games to try my Phaser out on. If it works well I'll have tp grab more like gun games for my Power Base Converter.

Gangster Town is a must play, and if you have an extra phaser, you'll be able to play with another partner or you can just try to beat the game "John Woo" style (a.k.a. Dual Wielding), and Missile Defense 3D is fun, but if you want an interesting challenge, try playing it without the glasses to have that "double drunk vision" illusion going on (that's how i do it since my SMS has the 3D unit, but not the glasses).
