An anonymous reader writes "Now that both Sony and Microsoft have announced their next-gen consoles, and we've gotten solid information about their hardware, technology, and features, Eurogamer asks whether Nintendo's struggling Wii U will be able to hold its own once the new competition arrives. 'Wii U has tanked — there's no other way to put it — with even the release of traditional big-hitters like Dragon Quest 10 failing to make a dent in the Japanese market. If you believe certain analysts, April saw things getting even worse in the U.S. with the Wii U shifting under 40,000 units, easily outsold by the 360 and PS3 — and, even more embarrassingly, the Wii.' If the Wii U doesn't see a miraculous turnaround, Nintendo may be left with the difficult choice of whether to port its software to competing consoles. It'll also serve as a bellwether to see if the big gamer complaint about the new Sony and Microsoft consoles — that they're only partly about games — is honest. 'At a time when the goal of its competitors is to own the living room, the extent of Nintendo's ambition is simply to be in it — a dedicated games console, and no more.'" http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Can+the+Wii+U+Survive+Against+the+PS4+ and+Xbox+One%3F%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F14N3sj8) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F13%2F05%2F25%2F1317200%2Fcan-the-wii-u-survive-against-the-ps4-and-xbox-one%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfaceboo k) http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/13/05/25/1317200/can-the-wii-u-survive-against-the-ps4-and-xbox-one?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

Let's forget that the name Wii was a stupid choice by Nintendo that was only outdone by naming their newest system the Wii-U. Is that an addon to the Wii or is it a totally new system? Can't really tell based on the name. Secondly, people already own systems at the graphical level of PS3 and Xbox360. Why would they want to buy a brand new 5 year old system? Since Nintendo could focus solely on making a games console, why didn't they at least make sure it would be the most powerful game system of the next generation instead of playing catchup to the current? They shot themselves in the foot when they made a cartridge based system (N64) when everyone else was moving onto CD's. The Wii saved them and this time it looks like they've shot themselves in the head. Let it be known the one making this comment has purchased every Nintendo console from the NES onward and still owns every one. I have not, however, purchased a Wii U.
