Im too used to Street Fighter I think to really get used to the controls. I dont like the fighting stick too. Street Fighter was a challenge at first, but I could go back to it and had fun. Mortal Kombt isnt fun to me, and Ive played the first four games, and I watched a EVO tournament of the newest one, Id love to play as Freddie if I could get the game for cheap. Am I just playing it wrong? How do you play this game? Whats an easy character to get the hang of?

EDIT: Since I made this thread I decided to below talk about Bushido Blade. I dont want to hog space on here.

You're fine. I've messed with them up to the first one on the PS2/GC era stuff due to being at Midway and I have to say outside of the first two I hate the games. Even beyond that as good as I did get with the original one I've had the SF2 or any other style of them etched into my mind so much I have to go with a good assault playing MK games because I never remember there's a block button which is no good. What turned me off to them entirely was the introduction to the RUN button and the hyper-bitchslap type playing which gave a hyperactive five year old an even playing field with button mashing when the older stuff like SF and clones were more steadily paced and tactical. The last one I touched around 2002 when it was being developed I didn't like because it was made too overly complex with multiple styles per character with complex Tekken kind of style motions to pull off stuff and it just was overkill.

The only MK stuff I have anymore is the original on SNES and if I choose to keep it I have the 2nd on there too from a couple weeks back in stunning shape CIB.

I don't know what to tell you. Not every game appeals to everyone. If you've played any fighting game, you know the mechanics to play any fighting game. You can't really play it... wrong. I wouldn't call any one character easier to use than another. The moves for all of them are pretty easy, just do a quick search for them.

The first two Mortal Kombat games were phenomenons strictly on the novelty of a video game with blood and violence. Nowadays, EVERY game has blood and violence, so it's not as novel as it once was and people can see that underneath the base-level appeal, there really isn't much meat to the actual gameplay.

Street Fighter II is, simply put, the superior game.

I personally think Street Fighter 2 is the better game but I've had more fond memories of playing Mortal Kombat in the arcade and on my SNES. I can play both games any day of the week but if I had to pick one to stick around it would have to be Mortal Kombat because of the memories I've had with it and it's historical significance, but I still love and adore Street Fighter 2.

Too true. MK always had interesting characters, but control and mechanics-wise those old games were a horror show compared to SF2 and it's many modifications, or even Fighter's History. The later games that were basically dumbed-down Tekken with more gore are entertaining and fun, but you can still name several fighters of the same generation that are better made in every way, shape and form.

The Arcade Collection (that's MK1, 2, and UMK3) occasionally goes on sale for less than two bucks. Sadly, it seems I just missed it this time around.

I'm told UMK3 is practically unbeatable in single-player mode as the sneaky AI will anticipate your every move, and the only way to proceed is to use the AI's strategies against it, but I never heard the details.

I watched a EVO tournament of the newest one, Id love to play as Freddie if I could get the game for cheap. It will be out on Steam very soon, and everything on Steam ends up on sale at 90% off one way or another.

Ehh, different people like different things.

MK is my favorite fighting game series by far, but I also enjoy the Street Fighter games.

Honestly, Tekken is the only big fighting game series that I've never been able to get into.

It makes sense people are bringing up Tekken about the later games on the PS2, since Ed Boon really loves Tekken. The only 3D fighting games I can get into and have fun with are Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter. I will get the new Tag Tournament Tekken game on the Wii U for the Mario/Nintendo characters novelty.

I want to like Mortal Kombat, but yeah, block buttons are stupid to me, unless its a 3D game. If I had a friend to play these with then I could more easily get into them I bet, the AI is too smart.

Hey, look at what showed up on my youtube feed.

If Boon is in love with Tekken that says a lot as I hate that game probably the most or nearly the most of those 3D fighters. I don't like the controls and button mashing involved to pull of moves as it's overkill so that explains it with 3D MK games from the 21st century. I never was huge on 3D fighters but Dead or Alive with it's rock paper scissors style of parry, grab, block and attacks I do like and Soul Edge/Caliber 1 I've been a fan of too.

Eh I like MK and SF (as a series) equally. But I'm not a competitive fighting guru or anything, I just like cool characters and fancy moves, I'm easy to please.

But the original MK1 on SNES / Genesis is a complete bore to play these days. I popped it in sometime last year and turned it off within 10 minutes. It was a nice blast to the past down memory lane but I wasn't wasting my time with those god awful controls and horrible mechanics. And it also seemed way harder than reasonable, but maybe my gaming skills have just deteriorated that quickly over the years.

Ok, I played the two Bushido Blade games. Its weirdly strangely addicting. Like Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter, the action isnt as fluid as Soul Calibur, but theres a reason why this is so key and perfect for the game. Its more a (kinda) realistic sword fighting simulator, you can kill/be killed in one attack. The game isnt long, you can beat it very fast, but if you have a friend then its very fun I think.

I highly recommend these two games released for the PS1.

Bushido Blade (the first one) is awesome. I love that you 'fail' and don't see the later characters if you break the rules, and that you can go walkabout (and ultimately just jump down the well). It's a shame nothing really capitalised on it. Way of the Samurai had a similar combat system though.

I broke a rule :/
I played the second game, guns in sword fighting games.......bad idea, but I killed that character by running around. I wish a new game would come out with more blood and more weapons, the realistic approach would probably be more welcoming to most gamers nowadays, and Soul Calibur seems to have hit a dead end with how its gone over the years, so maybe players of that and Samurai Shodown would get into it?

I didnt think Id love these two games as much as I do now before playing them. Its very addictive, the time between your opponent and you striking has a perfect tenseness.
