Rumor has it the Xbox One is overheating in part due to the ESRAM and that to fix this, Microsoft is going to reduce clock speed to push around 800-900GFlops instead of the 1.3TFlops that was previously rumored.

Not quite. The rumor is that the yields on the ESRAM have been poor because of the size of the overall chip die. As the size of the chip increases, the chance of an error in each tiny segment of the die increases. There are several possible scenarios if this turns out to be accurate. One would be that Microsoft would simply ship fewer units as they would not have sufficient viable chips to meet their requirements. Another possibility is that they would reduce clock speed to use imperfect units which are more prone to thermal build-up and overheating. A third possibility is that they will solve the yield problem quickly and it will have zero impact on the Xbox One. Frankly, at this point I have no interest in rumors and ultimately my money this generation is going to go to the manufacturer that delivers a console without used DRM and without an Internet connection requirement. The fact that Sony still hasn't clarified the situation leads me to believe that maybe there won't be any console that fits that description this time in which case I may just skip this generation all together.

It was already answered. Kotaku didn't quote everything Yoshida stated. They later reported that it was already answered and they skipped right by it.

"At a roundtable this morning, Sony's game studios chief, Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers. Sony won't require that." (Emphasis added.)"

There will be no difference than what can already be done now. Alice Madness Returns. The original Alice was on disc, but EA locked it away using an online pass, the reason I actually haven't purchased the sequel. Allowing third party publishers to do it, passes the repercussions from Sony to those publishers. Even EA doesn't have the balls to force a used game pass onto customers. Their game would bomb hard. For games that don't sell a ton of sales, there's not going to be a used game pass because not enough copies will get out there anyways and they'll only receive backlash from the consumer.

I already know what you're thinking. You were thinking of t he Eurogamer interview where what Yoshida said could have went either way. Not natively being an English speaker, he probably thought what he was saying sounded fine. Since it's been cleared up, twice, a report of it around a week ago in most news sites as well, people don't have to continue saying it's locked down like the Xbox One is.

Actually, it was not. There have been new rumors that have been circulating for the past couple of weeks and several media outlets have received a no comment response from Sony. There are two questions Sony has not answered. 1) Will the PS4 require an Internet connection ever? 2) Is there any form of DRM or other mechanism that would prevent users from freely selling or giving their games to a subsequent user?

I will concede that Sony has partially answered #2 in that they will allow publishers to do what they want essentially. They haven't, however, given a statement about what they are planning on doing for first party titles.

As for your other comments, if the rumors about Xbox One are true, there is no way EA and Ubisoft and every other major developer is going to pursue one model on Xbox One and another on PS4. Multiplatform games will be locked across both platforms guaranteed.

We'll know more for sure hopefully next week, but until then, there is no reason to think the PS4 or Xbox One will be consumer friendly.

I've heard it runs Windows NT.

Does the Wii U have used DRM and mandatory internet connection requirements?

WiiU isn't part of this generation IMHO. It's a half step and not a very good one at that. I will keep buying Nintendo first party stuff as long as the games are fun.

This news is extremely upsetting, because the Xbox One is going to dictate what 3rd parties do for the next 7 or 8 years. If this system ends up being significantly underpowered, it's going to mean that we are stuck with some underpowered crap for like 8 years or more, because Ubi Soft and EA and Take 2 and Activision are all going to program their games with the baseline console in mind.

The games will be designed around the Xbox 1's limitations, and most publishers like their games being pretty much identical on each platform, so don't expect them to harness the extra power of the PS4. Luckily Sony has a strong stable of developers that can show what the PS4 is capable of, and hopefully those games will reap the sales rewards, and force Activision and EA to use a bit more power of the PS4 and not just code everything to the lackluster Xbox One.

I heard a modified version of Mac OS X. It was from a reliable source so there's a good chance it's going to happen.

Yeah this would kind of suck. Isn't Microsoft's policy that if the game is going to be a multiplatform console release, then the it has to be the same or better quality than the competition? So even if the developers could add higher texture packets to the PS4 version like on PC, we're screwed since they'd have to scale it to the level of the Xbox One.

The PS4 would have the benefit of running every game at 60fps, but we'd be seeing a lot of low quality graphics outside of exclusives if this was the case. So hopefully they get it to work. Either that or hope they say screw it and keep the higher clock speed anways. It's not like Microsoft fans didn't stay with the company despite all the RRoDs they've received, among other rarer issues like disc drive failures.

Microsoft got kinda lucky that during the time the RROD was at its worst, Sony was charging half a grand for the PS3 and still struggling with a lackluster library. If the competition had been stronger the 360 may have suffered a lot more than it did. This time the price and library differences are likely to be negligible. There's just no way in hell that Microsoft is letting the One out the door with an above average failure rate. They'll do whatever they have to in order to fix it.
