DROP KARATEKA. Replace with Ikari Warriors, post haste. Drop Realsports Baseball, put in Midnight Mutants. I'd also say drop Asteroids for Scrapyard Dog. those first 2 games suck bad...baseball is just a port of the 2600 version with better graphics, and karateka, has no excuse. As for Asteroids, it's a good version, but there are better games then it.

Karateka was just AWFUL. I think the worst game on the system!
Drop Choplifter and add Midnight Mutants! That's my favorite game on the system, and I believe the first Atari home game to have a BOSS. When my 7800 comes out, Midnight Mutants always comes out with it. Do people really like Choplifter?! I dunno. It's an OK game but just always seemed knida generic to me. I think having it on so many different consoles diluted it.
I wouldn't be so quick to drop Asteroids, though. That two-player co-op feature REALLY makes the game (same goes for Centipede 2 player co-op)! I think it's the best version of Asteroids on any system, including the arcade.

Hmmm...maybe replace Donkey Kong or Desert Falcon or something with Klax? Who else has somethin to say on that?

Yes, Klax. Desert Falcon should probably stay, but considering the capabilities of the 7800, DK falls a bit flat. Impossible Mission isn't really my cup of tea, either that or DK could probably go to make way for Klax.
*edit* I just noticed Pole Position 2 is still there. That could be dropped too for its non-spectacular status.

Why do people dislike Pole Position? I thought that was a very popular game... I know it was my favorite racer.

it is one of my fav 7800 games and one of the best classic racing games.

I think Pole Position is a pretty solid title...Donkey Kong is too, but I really don't think it's top 20 material.

Why only top 20? That's almost half the entire 7800 library!

Well the 7800 has like 73 games or something...and of those only like 10, if that, outright suck.

Pole Position 2 is a middle of the road title on the 7800, probably shouldn't be in the top 20. One the better games for the system that hasn't been mentioned is the light gun game, Alien Brigade. Fun to blast aliens.
And my own idosyncratic top ten pick would be Ninja Golf just for its goofiness but I know some people think it's a little boring.

I'd almost say Double Dragon, or Rampage (both are sweet), but I don't think either is worthy of top 20...top 30 maybe, but not 20.

I need to get you guys used to checking our lists here! See banner below. Especially good for these "Top X" lists because you can see the whole library at once.

I was going to sell my 7800, but after seeing all these great games, maybe I should re-hook it up and play it. Ahhh, SPACE... the final problem.
Oh well, emulators don't use much room.

Ok, so there's 59 games for it...60 if you count Senso, which seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. And we don't even know what sorta protos you guys got for upcoming CGEs...
And you have to add this to the best games archive eventually Joe :D

I was unaware of a completed Klax for the 7800?
No top 7800 list can be complete without the splendid Tower Toppler.
Take out Galaga. It was a serious let-down, especially compared to the NES version, which is pretty much perfect.

Klax is complete, and was sold by ResQsoft for the past few months... now atari7800.com is selling it.
I thought Tower Toppler blew major ass, but thats me. I love 7800 Galaga more then just about every other version.

I don't own a NES. So, I'll leave the 7800 Galaga on the list.

Aside from the so-so graphics, the 7800 Galaga was too predictable and easy. Of the original batch of 7800 games, it was the only one that I didn't like. The ColecoVision version of Galaxian is actually more fun, and almost as good looking. It actually sounds better...
When it was released in 1988, Tower Toppler not only proved to be a great game, but it filled us with hope- now THERE was a game that showed what the 7800 could really do, just as Matt Patrol showed the sort of scrolling the ColecoVision could do. Then, over the next couple of years, while the NES and even the SMS thrived with a great variety of games, we 7800 owners...
A completed 7800 Klax? How does it compare to the NES version? Any good screenshots?
I always thought of the 7800 as the "little system that could have," but for its one unbeatable handicap- the Tramiels (grrr!).

I wouldn't say it's easy...it gets mad hard to dodge the missiles once you get to like wave 18 or so.
Tower Toppler looked impressive, but it lacked the important gameplay. God, that game was terrible...the controls were crappy and unresponsive, and that's my number 1 complaint. Like, it ruined it for me. It seems to me Tower Toppler is sort of a divided game...lotta people like it, lotta people hate it.

Hey Digital Press, can you add this 7800 list to the DP List Archive?
Ditto the Jaguar list?
Thanks,

Time to resurrect this thread from the pit of despair.
The list seems good, but I have some complaints.
1 Double Dragon should be in the top 100 worst games of all time. It's that bad!
2 Replace Scrapyard Dog with either Donkey Kong or Rampage, both are better.
3 Why no love for Water Ski? If you understand the controls it's a sweet game to play, totally original. Take that excuse of a game Karateka off and put Water Ski in its place.

This top 20 needs to be updated:
There are a couple homebrew games that should be included:
Beefdrop(aka Burgertime)
Pac-man Collection-has Pac-man, Puck-man-known as New Puck-man x in Arcades, Hangly Man,Ultra Pac-man, Random Mazes,Ms. Pac-man,Mrs. Pac-attack,
Pole position 2 needs to be dropped and maybe scrapyard dog.
As more homebrew games being released the more this list needs to be changed or create a top 25 7800 game list.
I know that froggie and Q_bert appear to be released some this year. This could bring more changes to the list. There also could be changes in the list due to there appears to be future 7800 games that be could be developed with the xboard in mind. An xboard is An expansion board with 128Kbyte SRAM and one POKEY(a sound chip used in ballblazer and commando) and still has the Maria Graphic processor.

What was everyone's opinion of One on One? I played that game to death on the Atari 800 computer, but I've only dabbled with the 7800 version (MESS). The speed is a little too fast, and I don't know if that's an emulation issue, or if that's how the actual cartridge played. Would be too bad if that was the case, because I've always had a soft spot for that game.
I'm really only enjoying a handful of games for the 7800, and nearly all of them from the early '84 crop of arcade games - Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Robotron, Food Fight, Xevious. Oh, and Ballblazer, I suppose, which is also very glitchy in the emulators. I don't mind the squarish, blocky graphics on this console. It seems to give it a certain charm.
I would like to see an update to one of the 7800 emus to fix a few of the bugs, like Ballblazer and One on One and the button mapping on Xevious. Probably wishful thinking.

I have a question. How much memory does a 7800 cart have compared to a SMS or NES? Is the space the reason that so many games are so limited? What new Homebrews are coming out, Atariage never updates their site?

It is up to what your asking for memory. the 7800 is capable making 512k games, which is about about half as much as the sms can with backswitching. It is less then the nes was capable of with the mmc chips in a cartridge. A nes game was capable of with the last version of a mmc is 1024k. The closest to that the nes go to that was with kirby, which was 768k according an old issue of gameinformer.
The 7800 never had a game bigger then 144k due to the owners of atari not wanting to spend money on making games bigger then that. Part of that problem was how much memory was in the system itself. It could cause an atari 7800 catridge to go at least $50.00 or $60.00 back in the day I think if the atari did a 512k game for the 7800. That problem can be fixed by getting a x-board and have it installed by going to:
http://www.x-game.se/products/xboard.htm. There hasn't been any games annouced for using it yet, but it sounds like there is at least one forum member on the 7800 boards on atariage is attempting to do a game for the 7800 with the xboard in mind. 7800 systems that have a xboard will have an advantage from the systems that don't have one installed like homebrew authors can sell the games cheaper and make games that are more then 48k.
Right now: Pac-man collection for the 7800 is out. What will be coming out for the 7800 some this year will be froggie otherwise known as frogger. Supposely the homebrew game beefdrop(otherwise known as beefdrop) will be back in stock at the atariage store soon for the 7800. Q-bert for the 7800 should be out sometime this year I think, when it is completed. If you own an Atari 5200, Adventure 2 is now completed. As for as 2600 hombrew games, there hasn't been a new homebrew game ready yet this year so far. Part of the problem with atariage not updating the site is the owner of the sight will be moving soon and is trying to fill all Holiday sale orders from the store. I hope this answers the questions about homebrews, 7800 memory and about atariage.
