Then get a 5200. Best console Atari made, and a purchase you will never regret. The 5200 library is somewhat small, but Berzerk, Pac Man, and Space Dungeon are some games that other systems do not have similar versions of (Space Dungeon is a 5200 exclusive).

If you get a 5200 just prepare to spend a lot of time and money refurbishing the controllers. I got an 800XL to avoid all the problems the 5200 presents, yes there's no cart version of berzerk but there are ways like the sio2pc to just get every game that exists and play it on real hardware and there's a lot more games to enjoy than a 5200. A lot of people love the 5200, I personally can't get over the crappy controls and don't have the time, patience or money to waste when I can play 98% of the same games on an atari 8-bit computer with regular joysticks and no headaches.

That's my two cents, spend it as you see fit.

If there ever were to be an adapter, it would basically have to be the whole system on a cart, with 5200 controller ports on the cart. The adapter would use use the 7800 as a pass through for power and video output.

The controllers on the 5200 have extra buttons not available on 7800 controllers.

The 5200 has a superior sound chip built into the system.

Some models of the 5200 have 4 controller ports for 4 player games, the 7800 only has 2 controller ports.

I like Berzerk on the 5200 but i just prefer the 2600 version as it is a little chunkier with the sprites,i presume you already have played the 2600 version in some form?

Yeah, I have the 2600 version, I actually have 2 copies of it. I didnt know the difference between the 5200 and 7800 was that massive.

I seem to remember an adapter that was in the works to play 7800 games on the 5200

Yes it was developed in 1984, I assume to allow 5200 owners to "upgrade" to the 7800 without spending as much money.
