Golly. Looks like a lot of us non-CGE lamers are lucking out. God must be making it up to us.

For my part, check out this find at the local Goodwill:

Playstation2 for $10. O_O

It was just the core – no power, AV or controls. No problem because all the PS1 stuff I had was forward compatible. So the big question was did it work? No way of knowing at Goodwill, so I played this angle to the manager who rang it up for $10.

So my mind was just reeling with giddiness as I sped home to test this puppy. I hooked up all the PS1 stuff and fired it up. Sho’nuff, it got power! Sho’nuff, the display and sound came on! Sho’…uh…hmm…it didn’t seem to be reading any discs.

So I got on the Web and started poking around. Disc read errors for the PS2 are well-known enough, and usually related to the lasers falling out of alignment. You can replace the whole laser system module in one drop ($75 new or $15 for an untested module on Ebay). Or if you want to DIY then you can re-align the lasers by adjusting some pots. All you need is an ESD-happy workspace, an oscilloscope and…

Whoa whoa whoa! Trying to get composite video out of an Atari 2600 (which i've done) is one thing, but laser alignment is way out of my league! Even if I could borrow an o-scope and my financial investment remained minimal, there’s still a good chance I would screw this up big time, and I’d really like this thing to work. I figured I’d call Sony and get an estimate. If the repair could be done for $100 or less it was still a deal.

So I called Sony’s U.S. support.center. I wanted to cut to the quick and try and get a repair estimate, but I had to go through the grind of giving a name, email, serial number etc. The nice young man on the other end asked me where I bought my PS2 and I said, “To be honest, I just got it at Goodwill for $10. So it’s probably out of warranty. But I know what the problem is and I just need an estimate for an out-of-warranty repair.”

Being the good customer service rep, the nice young man ran me through the troubleshooting steps I had already performed. Satisfied that I knew what I was talking about, he then uttered the following magic words:

“Well, based on the serial number you gave us, the warranty is still valid on this machine, so if you send it back to us we can fix it for no charge.”

So there it is. I’ve got an RMA number in hand and all I have to do is send the thing back. So even though I’m not physically there at CGE, I seem to be there in spirit, and am definitely getting the good deals. :D

Good luck to the rest of you as well!!

Find a Commodore 128, Commodore Printer, 1571 disk drive and 1702 monitor all in original box (except the 1702)

Everything have foam, papers and cables (again, except the 1702)

The whole kit was under the rain, so the computer and printer box got alot of water, but everything should be fine in couple of hours (they are in a drying session right now).

BTW, i saw Joe early this morning on the CGE Cam :D
