As of the past month or two I've been playing a lot of Astyanax for the NES and I've got to say, it's a pretty darn good hack n' slash side scrolling game! It's got some repetitive enemies and some insane boss battles later on in the game but all in all it's highly enjoyable and I definitely recommend it to those looking to try a game they've possibly never tried before on the NES. Anyone have any memories of it they want to share with the forums or maybe some insight on the game from personal experience? I did a review of it recently at http://theretrovideogameaddict.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-retro-video-game-addict-reviews.html, so check it out if you want to.

It's funny, I remember a sales clerk at Funcoland telling me not to buy this game waaaay back in like 1995 and I actually listened, I've been missing out and kind of feel bad I never gave this game a fair shake until recently. It's quite fun to play if you're into arcade ports and/or side scrolling titles.

Thoughts on Astyanax?

Fret not. The time wasn't right back then.

I haven't played it since the 80s, but I liked it a lot back then. It's a somewhat B-grade game but its fun and I appreciated the cut scenes.

Though I haven't played it, I hear the arcade version (titled "The Astyanax") is significantly different.

I really like the music, but the game itself is kinda bleh. It's basically a poor man's Legendary Axe.

I remember buying for a friend for his birthday one year. Oddly enough, I've never played it. It is on my wanted list though.

Love it. As a kid, I always used to pronounce it "ASS-TER-ANX" for some reason! Strange title.

There is a home movie of me playing this as a 5 year old in 1991 somewhere... I should digitize that one! It's pretty funny and definitely nostalgic.

It's actually named after a character in the story of the Trojan War: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astyanax

Same game producer, in fact. Anyway, Legendary Axe is better in every way (Asty's enemy patterns are boring while Axe's are challenging)... but if you only have an NES, then it's not fair to compare them.

I'm just bummed that I didn't give this game a chance until recently. Even in 1996 when me and my friend were trying to collect as much NES as possible we always passed up the game, I think a big reason was because we didn't know how to truly pronounce it and didn't want to look dumb when asking for it at our local Funcoland, lol. Anyhow, I'm just glad I'm playing it and own it now, it's become a personal gem of mine. :)

Astyanax is great game. I wouldn't put it among the very best games like Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, etc, but it's up there with the very good games.
