View Full Version : Thanks for the laugh, Mega Man X5

I decide to try X5, having just finished X4. I read through the manual, then select Mega Man and play through the first stage. Before I quit for the night, I browse the upgrade menus and such. I notice something called "fourth armor". Odd, I don't recall seeing any mention of fourth armor in the manual. I look through the manual again. No, there is no fourth armor.

Wait. Do they mean "force armor"? Did they seriously type fourth armor instead of force armor? They did! My girlfriend and I had a good laugh about this.

Maybe it was intentional, so I do some research. Despite the best attempts by fans to suggest it means "armor from X4" (which it is), none of the official text in the manuals, art books, etc call it fourth armor. It is consistently force armor.

I suppose one of people in charge of the translation had a lisp?

LOL that's pretty funny. X5 is general is plagued with a sense of "rushed" development. I always found it funny how the game insists on making you sit through tutorials on how to play a Mega Man game. As if the player at this point has never played one!

X6 is even worse in that regard. The controls are super-twitchy and they didn't even bother to remove the Japanese voice acting from the cutscenes (which was fixed in the MMX Collection). I remember picking up X6 with hope that it'd be as good as X4 and the previous games, but sadly that wasn't the case.

The series is generally regarded as sorta crap after 4, so it comes as no surprise that there would be a typo like that. Heck, I wouldn't be too surprised if the game itself had the typo :P

It's not a typo, just an idiotic romanization of the original Japanese text. The localization process for the game was embarrassingly pathetic: http://www.themmnetwork.com/2011/04/30/the-truth-behind-mega-man-x5s-maverick-names-revealed/

In a nutshell, the guy who was supposed to be responsible for it decided to be lazy and dump it on his wife, even though she had no idea what she was doing nor had any clue about the "lore" of the series.

This is how little of a crap Capcom gives about Mega Man fans, even back then. Instead of a legitimate, professional localization, we get some ditz throwing in inside jokes for the amusement of her husband.

I didn't even consider the maverick names. They did seem a little odd to me. It wasn't until I saw the Japanese names that I realized they didn't follow the usual convention.

I feel like I have no idea what the hell is happening in this game. The parts screen has no function so far, and I have six of the eight mavericks defeated. I know I need all four parts of each suit to enable it, but the manual mentions DNA parts or whatever, but I see no way to use them on that screen. I just get them and they disappear into the void.

At the end of the level, I get to choose life or energy, so I choose one, and I see no change in anything. Sometimes it will say "part completed" and show life or energy, and even lists it in the pause screen, but I still have no idea what they do. It isn't even related to my choice at the end. I will choose energy, and get a life part completed.

Also, I see no reason not to use the force armor constantly. It really makes the game easy. I blow through every boss on the first try.

I found it odd that the enigma cannon seemed to not be affected at all by my finding all the parts. I accidentally fired it right when I started the game and it had the exact same sequence as when I fired it after having it fully upgraded.

You complain about a manual typo in X5? just wait till you get to X6.

Seriously. Some of the lines are gold.
