View Full Version : Good, cheap starters for a Master System Library?

Okay, so I just scored a power base converter for a little less than $24, but I don't have any SMS games yet. I'd like to get a library started with the rest of my monthly allocated game funds - I've got about $16 left.

Alex Kidd In Miracle World appears to have bloated up considerably along with a good chunk of the SMS library, and the only other SMS games I know of well are the 8-bit Sonics, Shinobi and Quartet. Most every price guide for SMS I've found is pretty out of date as prices seem to have shot up considerably. So, DP, I come to ask:

What cheap (<$10) SMS games are worth buying?

Thanks in advance.

tough one.. most of the games I've been enjoying are probably more than that.

Are you worried about CIB or just carts? carts can get pretty cheap.

Govellius is good is a great game, sort of zelda/FF adventure/zelda 2-ish

also fantasy zone, rampage, double dragon, zillion, my hero (sega card)

I have a second copy of rampage (loose cart) if you want it.

out of the 50+ games I have i would say that most of the cheaper ones are sorta bleh but I'm CIB only so cheaper there may be do-able if you do cart only.

I really like Rampage, Outrun and, this may sound odd, Carmen Sandiego. All are probably under $10 CIB unless they've really shot up in the last couple years.

I've been trying to find a copy of Astro Warrior myself.

I don't care immensely about CiB since most MS boxart is either a bad redraw of genesis art or an absolute eyesore; there's a handful of exceptions, but not many ;^^ It's nice if I can get it, but I can still enjoy the game without.

As for the games, definitely some good suggestions here. I asked a friend who grew up with an SMS and he told me to get zillion right away, but they average around $17 loose OR CiB on ebay :( I found a copy of Zillion 2 for $4.25 but from what I've seen it's not really as good as the first.

I tried out Govellius and it's pretty fun, but I get hit a ton on the overworld sections. I'll definitely consider picking it up but I figure I should chek out a few others first.

Carmen's an interesting choice, haha. Is it any better than the genesis one?

I might PM you about that rampage in a little bit; I'm selling a few doubles online so I'll have a little extra paypal cash once that's done.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Fantasy Zone, Shinobi, Action Fighter, Golvellius, Space Harrier, Out Run, Alien Syndrome, Choplifter, Time Soldiers, Rampage are all easy to find and cheap US SMS games.

Welcome to one of my favorite consoles! I advise you to check out sega8bit.com (http://sega8bit.com) and also segamastersystem.com (http://segamastersystem.com) when I finally get back to restoring the hosting fees!

...welp.

An hour after I bought the PBC, the seller refunded it and cancelled the sale.

Asshole must have decided he didn't make enough money on it (he started bidding at 99c but had a buy it now of $69.)

Is there anything I can do about it? If not, I guess another time...

thanks anyway.

If you're patient you can probably find one for a cheaper price, a few years back I got one with a Genesis 1 for under $10 at a thrift store. They do turn up.

Allrighty, I'll keep on looking. I actually missed one last year for $10 by a minute - saw someone walking away with it just as I walked in.

Keep watch on the UK. Great selection there for cheap.

Sonic 1 and 2 are easy.

You can never go wrong with Choplifter. The Alex Kidd games are also good but some of them can get expensive.

A lot of the lightgun games are fun if you still have a CRT TV lying around.

Gangster Town, Wanted, and Shooting Gallery were some of my favorites growing up. Zillion is another good one, although it looks like you mentioned it already.

Astro Warrior is a really good one too, and is in one of the those 2-in-1 carts (I think with Hang On?) that I'm pretty sure was a pack-in at some point.

Action Fighter and Enduro Racer were fun when I was a kid, but I haven't played them in a long time.
