View Full Version : Crude and offensive games that are also really fun?

A lot of games that used crude humor back in the day seemed to use it in a gimmicky sort of fashion, like a "We're going to make it all about farts and boogers to get kids to want the game, and not focus on actual gameplay!" type thing. It was pretty demeaning to children, but some games were crude and actually really fun.

Earthworm Jim is the prime example. It has things ranging from belching, vomiting, and fart noises, but that doesn't get in the way of innovative platforming.

Duke Nukem 3D is another example. A different kind of "crude" from Earthworm Jim, it was pretty infamous in the public's eyes for its suggestive themes.

What are some other games that proved that a game could be both tasteless (so to speak) and fun?

The Gals Panic series range from suggestive and racy to downright pornographic, and they're all fun as hell. They're all an interesting take on Qix.

I have a Puzznic arcade PCB that unfortunately stopped working recently. People familiar withe NES or PC Engine game know its a great puzzler, but the arcade version has full on porn shoehorned in it for no apparent reason. So you get to look at some titties while you solve the harder levels.

The yakyuken special for the Saturn is essentially rock-papers-scissors where the reward for winning is a rather young appearing girl takes her clothes off. The girls in the videos are hilarious. The look like they're ashamed or being held at gunpoint. Their apparent discomfort makes it hilarious. The game is impossible to win, too. My friend had to use an action replay code to see all the videos.

It is a really good game. One thing Ive never understood: in the title animation, what are all the characters doing? The pigs with the sign: We love Kobe, do they mean Kobe beef or is Kobe a character? The penguin is counting on an abacus. The Mambo fish is predicting the weather?? That little guy is moving that huge dresser full of underwear that wont even fit him, and the other penguin is out delivering newspapers. All while the Octopus with a mustache is dreaming of sexy (human) females. Like seriously, wtf is going on here??

Great soundtrack too

I think that I might have this game, unless it was one of my Famicom games that I sold off. I will have to check later today.

How bout the cutscenes where the penguin is squishing the padded bra and staring at it intently?

God I love that game.

No no, you're just culturally misinformed. That boss is a ghost (or a guy wearing a white sheet) with a manji on its forehead. The manji is not a swastika, and even if it were, the swastika itself is an historic religious symbol manipulated and given a bad image by Nazi Germany. the symbol itself dates back hundreds of years.

Look up wikipedia on the manji to learn more about it.

My guess is that they're probably referring to the fifth-largest city in Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobe).

According to HG101's article on the series, "Sexy Paro picks up with Takosuke running some sort of merc-for-hire agency, where the crew helps out people in need," which explains (most of) the opening images. As far as Takosuke dreaming of sexy human females, my guess is that it's probably a parody of shokushu goukan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tentacle_rape) (link NSFW).

Seconded on the soundtrack, btw. Fantastic work on Konami's part there.

Given the general ignorance about this in the u.s., It still amazes me that the manji made it into the Legend of Zelda's u.s. release. (It's the level 3 map in the first quest).

manji (まんじ) is swastika. That's all it means, it's the Japanese word for it. In fact in kanji form it looks exactly like what it means!! (this: 卍 )

There are two types of swastikas. There is the traditional swastika, which is a good luck symbol around the world (with the word itself stemming from Sanskrit, the language used by Indians/Hindus) , but nearly all talk in the Western world of the swastika since WWII is of the Nazi swastika, which is NOT the same as the traditional swastika or the manji character. Besides the extreme difference in what the Nazi swastika represents, it's also counterclockwise. So when people say that the swastika, implying the Nazi swastika, is not the same thing as the manji character, they are absolutely right.

Of course, most Westerners are ignorant of all of this, and it's resulted in all sorts of stupidity when Japanese products (anime, manga, games, etc.) containing manji characters are brought to the US. If left in, it usually results in some degree of controversy, but a lot of the time, they "censor" it out. Like in Goemon's Great Adventure on N64, the destructible blocks with stars on them originally had manji on them, and they actually screwed up with the US manual and left in an image of the block prior to alteration.

Yeah, you are right. I am (or was) aware it was used as a symbol in ancient Japan, I guess I did not make the connection. The 'guy in the white sheet' looks alot like a clan member to me. I wasnt aware that it was called a Manji instead of swastika.
Ive never been really big into manga, but when I was in high school I used to really like Blade of the Immortal, which features an immortal samurai who wears the manji symbol, I guess to represent his immortality.

Thanks for clearing this up, I been confused for awhile why a KKK member wearing a swastika would live in dracula's castle.. (or kid dracula's castle anyways..)

Is THAT what that mini game is all about?? I dont have the translated version so with the mini games I dont know whats going on..

Ah, now there's a surprise out of nowhere! I have a bootleg of the PlayStation version of this game. So silly and fun! The girls have the same retro charm as the ones you see on MXC. And the game is totally winnable unaided. Each girl has a particular tendency you can exploit, and some are harder than others.

The Swastika was originally a Sumerian or Babylonian symbol IIRC and I believe it was a mirror image to the Nazi one.

The king of offensive/crude games I can think of is Duke Nukem Forever. The game does some truly shocking things that people glossed over because MEH THIS GAME IS FROM 1997 LOL such as first person peeing, and a first person blowjob by two blondes....within the first few minutes of the game.

There must be some kind of story in Japan behind ghosts that dress in a way that looks similar to KKK members. A similar character had to be censored out of Bangai-O, as you can see in the comparison shots on this page:

Thats so weird that you pointed out that Bangai-O screen, the first time I played it was using a bootleg copy that somebody gave to me. It must have been a copy of the European version because I saw that screen and I remember being totally baffled.

Not much to say,the game is very japanese relating to it's culture. It's probably why none of the parodius games made it to the u.s.The other being that parodius is a parody to the gradius series.

Don't know if its been mentioned but Kato and Ken for the PC Engine which has farts as a weapon and characters urinating and defecating. That was all eliminated in the North American version for the TG-16 - JJ and Jeff. Luckily the core gameplay remains which is still good. One of the few platformers I enjoy.
