View Full Version : 8 Bit beer from Tallgrass Brewing
This beer is a REALLY good American Pale Ale. Thought I'd share it, not sure if there are any other beer connoisseurs on this board other than me.

I've seen it, but passed just because I'm not an ale guy. If they make a stout or lager I'll definitely give it a shot.

I've got two local liquor stores that have a TON of craft beers, and I've never seen this one. Anything you'd compare it to?
It tastes like a smoother IPA and does not have a strong 'piney' flavor. This is an American Pale Ale, not sure what the difference is from an IPA. The guy at the store said it is brewed with 100% Galaxy hops, which I guess are some high quality hops; haven't googled it yet.

i brew mine with Galaga hops
Indian Pale Ale first came about when India was colonized by Britain - to keep the Ale from going bad, it was preserved by throwing in much more hops, or at least that is what I have heard.
Haven't been able to try this one, unfortunately, but it does look quite nice. I was never a huge fan of pale ales or IPAs, but I was just starting to acquire a taste for them when I wound up in Taiwan, where all we get is week swill, i.e. light lagers.
Down here in the deep South, I find that Pale Ale's are the perfect Spring/Summer beer. Great for grilling.

I really like hefewiesen. I may try this but it's so hard to pass up a good hefe when I'm beer shopping.

My local liquor store finally started stocking the 8-Bit, I ordered it direct and had it delivered the first time. Does have a nice taste, I just like my IPA's a little more hoppy. The can is cool but there is so much better out there that I'm not sure if I'd recommend it over quite a few others though.

You should, this isn't an IPA.
American Pale Ales, confusingly enough, are closer to British style IPA (less bitter) than American IPA (more bitter/hoppy).

I understand what you mean, I love hoppy brews as well, however, I like a wide variety of tastes and hoppy IPA's seem like a dime a dozen now-a-days. Finding a great, smooth, mellow, beer is a pleasure. Here are some reviews, should have posted this earlier:

Technically yes, but there's a big difference between Guinness or Sam Adam's Cream Stout and a pale ale.

Yeah, but without getting too technical, when you say "Ale", you're basically saying "I like beers that aren't lagers." -- The VAST majority of craft beers are ales. It's almost as vague as just saying, "I like beer."
So what he said sounded to me like, "I like almost all kinds of beer as well as stout." Which sounds kind of redundant.
I dunno, it sounds snobbish, but once the idea's in your head as a brewer, etc, it's like nails on a chalkboard to see it incorrectly applied.

You do make a great point there, seems like everyone's trying to out do each other nowadays. Long Weekend IPA out of Wisconsin is a pretty mellow, cold beer on a warm summer day kind of drink. Lately I've been loving the 25th Anniversary Goose Island ESB, Ska Brewing's Decadent Imperial (Strong, be carefull) and Mexican Logger (Great for a backyard BBQ or beach), New Holland's The Poet, Wytchwood's Hobgoblin or King Goblin and holy crap anything by Revolution Brewing here in Chicago, the website can explain each one better than I but gauranteed they are all equally fantastic...http://revbrew.com/beer/view-beers

Yeah, that 8-bit is a solid APA. Like others, I prefer hoppier beers most of the time, but that doesn't mean an APA doesn't hit the spot sometimes. My biggest beer problem lately is that all the really great hoppy beers are high abv., with few exceptions. That and Founder's Red's Rye has become seasonal, and that was my second favorite beer. The best value in beer right now IMO is Summit's Saga IPA. Don't confuse this with their old IPA, Saga is a great beer and I can usually get a 12-pack for 11 bucks.
Back to 8-bit, when this came out a year (?) ago, someone on the boards here had me send them a couple empties for their game shelf or something. Forgot who that was right now. I've had an empty sitting on our bar here for a really long time just because I like the art and have a hard time pitching it.

I was going to keep one of the can's but decided against it. I really wanted to keep one un-opened to put on my shelf as it seems better to have a full can with some weight to it as opposed to an empty aluminum can, but as expense has that beer is I'd rather drink it.

Yep, 8-Bit's been out for a little while. I live in Topeka so we get all the Tallgrass brews. Good stuff, but I'm sick and tired of American craft ales.
"ale" means that it was made with an ale yeast, which is a top-fermenting yeast that does its magic at warmer temperatures and shorter duration than lager yeasts. This means that Pale Ales, IPAs, stouts, wheat beers, are all "ales".
"lager" means that it was made with a cooler-temperature, bottom-fermenting yeast. "lager" does not denote a particular style. Pilsners, piss rice and corn pale "lagers", Hefeweizen, Bocks (Maibock, Doppelbock), Schwarzbier, are all "lagers", made with the same type of yeast.
