In 1983 -- or at least I think it was 1983 -- there was a re-release of Mr. Do planned for the arcades that included extra levels (a lot of extra levels).

It showed up in a video gaming magazine from that time.

Does anyone know if it was ever released... or, if not, has anyone out there possibly completed coding it?

Always had a soft spot for Mr. Do!, especially Mr. Do's Castle. According to this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Do!), the version you speak of was released in 1989 by Electrocoin. That's the only ready corroboration I can find, however.

Ooh! That's the one.

A bit later than I thought too (unless it was hugely delayed).

Thanks so much!

Now if there was only some way I could track it down...

I wish Universal would sell the rights to release a Do! collection on something.

The most recent iteration was a freaking java mobile phone version of the arcade game distributed by Namco like, six years ago.

Universal (the company that created Mr. Do, which I don't think has any relation to the movie company whose game division is now part of Activision) sold their assets to a Japanese company called Aruze, I think.
So, Mr. Do! was one of a billion arcade games released on Wii VC in Japan only (okay, it was more like 50 Namco games and a comparative handful of others).

Has anyone here played Neo Mr. Do! at all? I wonder if it's worth tracking down...

I highly recommend the version on the original game boy. It's fantastic.

I wish I could find a copy, same with the SNES version.

There is a knockoff of Mr. Do! for the Gameboy Color, Quest Fantasy Challenge. They replaced the cherries with diamonds in the game, but the box art still shows cherries on the playfield so it's clear they really ripped off Mr. Do!

It's mediocre. Probably my least favorite game in the series. Sucks that's the one that they went out on. Really odd graphics too.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that one, thanks.

Someone should do a Youtube video of this version if it hasn't happened already.
Has anyone here played Neo Mr. Do! at all? I wonder if it's worth tracking down...Like most Neo-Geo games, it is quite trivial to get it going in an emulator.

I think it's worth checking out at least once; it's a really exotic take on the formula.

There are several out there. I like and sub to a fellow called "Gaming History Source" who puts out videos about all the ports of arcade games. Here's the one on Mr. Do - the Neo Geo version is at the end around 11:18

I really like the Atari XL/XE version but I don't think it was released in cart form.

I have a neo Mr. Do mvs cart and I think it's fun! You can turn Mr. Do into a woman and shoot rockets. It's pretty crazy!

Btw--I've got a copy of the snes version (cart only) that I'm willing to part with if anybody's interested.

Both are tough to find in the wild, but I did find one SNES version loose for $9.99, it quickly found a home with me. The GB version continues to elude, but I believe if I did find it, I wouldn't be so lucky price-wise than with the SNES version.

I also remember Mr. Do's Castle, played it as a young kid and promptly got my ass handed to me. This game didn't mess around. Do Run Run and Mr Do's Wild Ride were nice too, just never saw them in any arcade areas here, or any places that had arcade cabs in them.

I have it for the mvs and it's not that bad,to me it's the original with updated graphics and some tweaks.

I actually kind of liked it.

You're right though, the presentation is a bit weird (and it doesn't have the replay value of the original).

I suppose I should mention that the ColecoVision version of Mr. Do and Mr. Do's Castle are both stellar.

I almost forgot about it but years ago I found the Tomy Mr. Do! handheld which was only sold in Japan(okay, a Mr. Go! version was sold in Europe). I was lucky and found it in a thrift for under $5 total once taxes were added, this was back when good stuff still showed up and was priced cheap. It's actually pretty rare and very expensive now from what I can see.

Reason I brought that up is because it's actually really fun, usually most handheld versions of arcade games are terrible. This one is excellent, if anyone gets a chance to play this please do so. I would play it more often but I don't want to break it, it uses a real fluorescent light bulb as a back light so if it gets used up there's really no way to repair it.

There are several out there.Videos of this Electocoin Mr. Do, you mean? I can't seem to find them.

Sorry I thought you were talking about the Neo Geo version. I've never heard of this electocoin Mr. Do. I'll have to do some research. Sounds interesting.

EDIT - there's a picture on this page, is this what you mean?

Looks like a slot machine with a Mr. Do theme.

Then I have no idea. I know the wiki article mentions electrocoin made a 99 level version but I can find no evidence of it.

Wait, there's this -

Yep. That's the article.

The magazine that it's from is "Computer and Video Games" issue 87. January 1989. The magazine itself is PDF'd on a site called
http://archive.org

AKA. The Internet Archive.

He says he played a prototype, so I would hope that there would be at least one working machine out there.

Oh, so it's not just sitting there in the MAME romset already?

I couldn't find it, you'd think there's gotta be a prototype rom out there somewhere.
