Never owned a Sega CD before but found a working one recently. I'm a big fan of RPGs and wondering what are some of the best RPGs for the system, and also what your favourites might be.

The only ones I can think of

-Lunar
-Lunar 2
-Shining Force CD

Dark Wizard

Popful Mail though it's a action rpg plus a fun one to boot.

Ahh Garry you beat me to it. Granted I haven't played many, but Vay is the only decent RPG that comes to mind.

There's no such thing as a "bad" Sega CD RPG, despite what the internet may tell you.

At least, if there are bad ones, they never got localized.

Vay is an underrated gem, and Dark Wizard (though really more of a strategy game) is pretty nice too.

The only RPG I've ever played for the Sega CD was Dark Wizard, which I believe was more of a strategy/rpg more than anything but I remember really enjoying it circa 1996 when I owned and played it. I may need to hunt that one down again someday.....

Shining Force CD is really good, I like how its more focused on the battles rather than wandering around looking for towns and plot-points.
Vay is also really good. As far as RPG games go its pretty challenging.

Heimdall, which is pretty poopy.

Dungeon Explorer may count as an action RPG.

I actually appreciate both of those.

Though its more of an action RPG like Zelda 2, Popful Mail will probably interest you, and it's probably one of the top 3(if not THE best) games on the system.

Dune is an interesting RPG too. It's designed I'm the west so it won't remind you of Lunar in any way, but it's interesting and a nice homage to the weirdness of the David Lynch film.

Wouldn't the Dungeons & Dragons game be classified as an RPG? I am not saying a good one since I think I played it for all of 5 minutes, but an RPG none the less.

I may have to try Shining Force CD, I've actually heard quite a bit of good things about it and it's a game that looks pretty good from the YouTube videos I've seen.

Two others (albeit not very good ones):

Dungeon Master II (PC port)

Revengers of Vengeance - Really weird RPG/Fighter hybrid - I couldn't get into it all and only played it a bit.

Fortunately these missteps are more than made up for by Dark Wizard (one of my favorite games of all time - gotta love Krystal's wyverns and the wyvern rider), Popful Mail, the Lunars, Vay and Shining Force CD.

Shining Force CD is an updated version of the games that appeared on the Game Gear with enhanced graphics ( looks great ).
( I think 2 in total ) but pretty sure 3 were released in Japan.
Fun game, you can forget exploring but the fighting is too fun
Some things like secrets have changed but again, I played it so long ago I'm pretty fuzzy on it all..
As far as I can remember it does have some new content exclusive to the disc.
You can't go wrong.

You can play the 3rd game after finishing the first 2 if I remember right. The thing is that in order to do it you have to have a memory card to hold the saved games.

No, only 2 of the Game Gear games were included on Shining Force CD. Shining Force CD is divided into 4 books, the first 2 books are the Game Gear games, the last 2 books are new content specific for the Sega CD and continue the story from the Game Gear games. For books 3 and 4 you do need the memory card as you've said.

There is 3rd Game Gear game that never left Japan, it's not related story wise to the other 2 Game Gear games.

I forgot about AD&D: Eye of the Beholder, but that is readily available on other platforms and in better versions, so I wouldn't bother with it.

Is Power Monger an RPG? I've never really played it, but it looks like it might be one.

Do point-and-click adventures count as RPGs (or an offshoot of them)? Sega CD had some fun ones.

Heimdall just felt like a choppy port of a PC game to me (I haven't played it in years, but I remember it just seemed to run really slowly). The story seemed kind of interesting (I think, again, I haven't played it in years), but I just couldn't get into it. What did you like about it?

Dune has roleplaying elements. Though its probably closer in definition to a sim game.

No, Power Monger was a strategy game a la Populous and it was awful. Sega CD had another 10 or 12 RPG's that were unfortunately released in Japan only. I think a group has been working on translating Shadowrun CD into English but the project seems to be stalled.
