View Full Version : Best Portable SNES?

I'm looking to get a portable SNES system.

I'd like to have the ability to do a few things

- Use original SNES controllers
- Use a retro adapter to play NES titles
- Project good quality game play onto a TV
- Have a high quality screen on the device

I had a retro pro duo 2, and I found the screen on it was bad quality, it was fuzzy and looked a little distorted. The picture also distorted when going out to a TV, but perhaps that happens with all portable SNES consoles.

I'm looking at perhaps the Supaboy or FC GO Version 2.

What do you guys think? Is there any portable console I'm missing? I'd say my biggest concern is screen quality, followed by being able to play NES games.

I'd love to hear your guy's opinions.

The best portable SNES is going to be one of the custom ones people at the Ben Heck forums make. Those sometimes use real SNES internals. But expect to pay a premium.

Lol I'd likely never pay over $100, and I imagine those customs cost 100's.

You won't find one with ALL of these features. Some are better than others, but it's like saying colon cancer is better that pancreatic cancer. Either way, still sucks.

Other than the NES adapter the v2 releas of supaboy fits his list well enough. The retro duo has the other but is poorer all around.

Sometimes people make or buy these things and get sort of bored with them after a while. It can't hurt to throw out some offers.

I remember seeing one that doubled as a portable as well as a stand alone console that looked pretty good, if not a tad bulky for a portable. I will have to hunt for it online but the name escapes me at the present time, I just remember it looking really cool.

Why not just get a PSP or DS XL and mod it for homebrew? It'll likely outperform anything someone could build in their garage.

Because emulation blows. The PSP is pretty far from perfect SNES emulation too

What the hell happened to the GCW Zero ? Did they ever ship out the systems to all the people in the kickstarter ? For awhile there, it was looking like it would be the best possible handheld to have for retrogaming.

I'm having pretty good luck with mine. What's broken?

Can anybody else confirm that the SupaBoy is better than the Retro Duo 2?

And PSP sucks. Games like Mario Kart you can't even emulate.

Also, is there any NES adapter that will fot in a SupaBoy?

I don't like dealing with emulator, because other than PC I always find there is certain games that are not superior. I loved the way the Retro Duo played, but the screen quality was just too poor for my liking. I'm hoping maybe the SupaBoy is better, and that I can use a NES adapter.

These new JXD handhelds are far better for emulation than the PSP.

Playing super nes (and other old consoles too) is very good on a smartphone or cheap android tablet paired with a ps3 controller or wii classic controller pro. Beats any crappy clones like supaboy, which are bulky, poorly built and eats batteries.

Which one do you recommend? I see several, but the one that looks like a Vita clone looks like the best.

I enjoy the RDP v2, but have never used the Supaboy, so I cant compare the two. I do have the fc 16 v2. It is ok. The rdp screen is better than the fc. Also have the top right snesp from the benheck forums pic. It is awesome.

I know people who have much tested the rdp2 and its inferior as it has stability problems not just in general but between one system to the next running a game and not on another which is goofy. I can't say if a NES adapter on it works, but its not a cheap piece of crap and works fine. Press had no clue what he's on about saying it is a battery eater. If that refers to itself, it's reach arable and lasts 5 hours, and if you mean in game batteries, the RDP was the one proven to zap the life out of SNES batteries by a fe people.

So you'd say the SupaBoy is better? Big thing for me is screen quality. That really bugged me on the rpd 2 I had. I felt it was very poor

I've never used a SupaBoy, but I have used a RetroDuo Portable v2.0 and an FC16 Go Version 2. RetroDuo Portable v2.0 all the way. It's an all-round better portable Super NES than the FC16 Go for several reasons:

-Better battery life (7+ hours vs. 2+ hours for the FC16 Go Version 2)
-Better screen (the RetroDuo Portable v2.0's screen is pretty clear with good colors while the FC16 Go Version 2's screen is blurry, has slightly worse response time, faded colors, and the picture seems the jitter vertically a bit)
-Better on-board controls (the FC16 Go Version 2's on-board controls suck)
-More comfortable to hold (the FC16 Go Version 2's boxy design digs into your hands a bit. The corners aren't sharp, but you will still feel them)
-Full Stereo sound whereas the FC16 Go Version 2 is dual Mono (that Stereo sound claim on the FC16 Go Version 2 is a LIE!), albeit very muffled on a TV and through headphones

The only thing that's better on the FC16 Go Version 2 is the audio output from the two speakers. It's still not Stereo sound, but the speakers are CONSIDERABLY louder than those on the RetroDuo Portable v2.0, which don't go very loud (but they're still decently loud) and they crackle a lot with loud Super NES games when set at maximum volume.

Word of advice, though: trash the provided RetroPort Adapter and buy the standalone version. The one the RetroDuo Portable v2.0 comes with is GARBAGE. The audio is distorted, it does not play Castlevania III, expansion audio is not wired into the audio circuit, and worst of all, many games hit false notes left and right. This isn't the common reversed duty cycles issue that plagues NOAC-based Famiclones, they're actually correct on both RetroPort Adapters, but the one the RetroDuo Portable v2.0 comes with will literally output the wrong notes. It really sucks. While you can fix the distorted sound by soldering an extra resistor, this isn't something everyone can do. You will also have to deal with that with the standalone RetroPort Adapter, but the simple fact it doesn't hit false notes puts it a step above the one provided with the RetroDuo Portable v2.0.

Final note on the RetroDuo Portable v2.0: if you find one that doesn't play games with the SuperFX (StarFox, Stunt Race FX, Doom, etc.) or CX4 (MegaMan X2 and MegaMan X3), send it back. A RetroDuo Portable v2.0 HAS to be able to play those games. If it doesn't, it's defective.

SNES emulation on PSP is sloooooooow. I have a PSP-2001 that has CFW (5.5 Prometheus 4, if memory serves), and I have barely used it for SNES emulation because it's slow and just not responsive enough. PSP does great for 8-bit systems and Genesis/Megadrive or TurboGrafx/PCE, but SNES just doesn't work that well. I tried to play Super Mario World on mine, and it just sucks wind.

Seems like in every thread about the PSP, 1-2 people that rave about "near perfect" SNES emulation on the PSP, but in my experience it just ain't so. Most games work with few actual issues outside of speed, but slow is still slow and very few games run at full speed, even after messing with the CPU speed, frame skip, etc.

I just got my JXD S7300 and haven't had the chance to really put it through its paces, so I'm not comfortable recommending it quite yet. But after flashing it and bumping up the CPU a bit, it's run the 5 or so SNES games and 2-3 N64 games I've tried, at full speed with no graphical issues other than some very minor stuff in one game.

Has anybody on here had a SupaBoy and can state whether or not the quality is better than RPD?
