Does anyone still enjoy playing this 90's FPS classic? I believe I first played it on PC DOS, but it saw ports to 32X, N64, Jaguar, Xbox, and probably some other systems I am forgetting. I believe it had the ability to be played multi-player over an intranet on Windows PC's too.

Anyone with fond memories of Doom gaming sessions from the 90's?

I was in college when Doom came out. I remember several nights of heading to the 24 hour computer lab with some friends after the bars closed to play against each other over the LAN. Great memories.

I just played through the 32x version the other day.

I spent a lot of my time in middle school with graph paper pads creating maps which I would then make when I got home. I did this also with Duke 3d.

Like Wolk 3d before it, Doom help solidify my love for gaming on the PC and help start my push away from the consoles. SNES was really the last console I had a big collection and use with. After that, consoles dwindled to nothing even though I continued to have them but usually only for a specific game. the N64 was the last console I had games for but I never really like it.

I always enjoyed playing Doom the most on the Playstation. It looked better than the SNES, and 32X versions by far as it didn't have that border around the action.

And yeah, OP forgot the Playstation version.

My childhood memories of Doom were that I never had a PC that was powerful enough to run it, and by the time I had one, Quake was out. It's not that I didn't want to play it, it's that I basically couldn't.

Ironically, I have almost no desire today to revisit it for some reason, which is weird.

Doom is possibly my favorite game of all time and I always have it installed on my PC. I think one of the things that keeps me playing it is the huge mod community, there's tons of really fantastic fan made levels and conversions out there.

YES!

When I built my new old gaming PC it was one of the first games I loaded up.

You can play Doom in a web browser for free!

I don't think I have ever played Quake. Was it the official sequel to Doom, and was the gameplay any good?

I should add that part of the allure of Doom, especially the older pixelated versions, is the choppiness of the graphics. It takes me back to that time like nothing else.

There is still a pretty big speedrunning community for doom games, and still a large community making custom content I think you can find on DoomWorld or sites like that. Whether it be ports of doom 64 to run on the PC, or custom made doom WADS.

I think Doom was the first game I ever played, before my parents even got me the N64 and gameboy I grew up with I had saw my Uncle playing it on a laptop. I quickly memorized the codes for all guns and invincibility (IDKFA, IDDQD). Haha, definitely still have a lot of love for doom!

I have it on my DS as well so I can play it where ever. Such a versatile game/engine.

The first version I played was the 32x version. It's a terrible port, but the core gameplay is so good that I adored it anyway.

I've played many versions in my day. While the n64 and PlayStation versions are notable, nothing beats the pc versions running at 60 fps, with the extra textures excluded from many of the ports. Thankfully, these are the versions you can get on Xbox Live, and they're really fun to play with strangers. Doom players on xbla tend to be a bit different than the cod crowd.

Fun and still relevant to quality gaming and I do. I do use that gzdoom front end though for a modern interface. That oddball unique n64 version also has a fairly recent windows app that can convert the n64 rom to it to play on PC and that's slick. For gzdoom though I used the final doom collectors cd 4 wad files. I also for fun keep doom2 gba around.

I have the Japanese Saturn version of Doom, and it is actually quite good.

I am not much of an RPG player, yet I enjoy the early Phantasy Stars. This the same for first person games, since I am not a huge fan of them, but Doom is one of the games that I do enjoy. I know one of the things I liked was the 3D aspect of the game.

I first played Doom on my old computer in DOS. Like sloan said, seeing those pixelated images represents the early/mid nineties gaming well and brings back memories when I see it.

Love it. I have so many versions and platforms of this series. I remember when our old pc game shop had floppys at the counter of hacked games. The funniest was doom bbb. The enemies where beavis and butthead and the bosses where gnarly barneys. Haha. Fun times.

Doom was the first reason I ever had to take notice of pc gaming. Doom made me want a 32x, which I got for Christmas in '94 and love -- probably more than most people. The PS custom edition is my 'go to' version, but it's soundtrack makes me cry. I'm not a big fan of fps, but I still love Doom and could play it forever. There is just something simple and pure about only moving about the 2 axis, not worrying about aiming up or down.

Maybe this says more about me as a gamer than it does anything, but I spend a lot of time panic running, staring at my invisible feet or looking at the sky in modern fps. I've just never gotten used to it. I don't have to worry about that in Doom. Plus, mowing down tons of enemies at near lightspeed is also a plus.

..and I just made this coaster today:

To answer your question, no it was not marketed as a sequel.

The gameplay... well, Quake seems to be a hit-or-miss for people. On one hand, its nice and fast and in full-3D and has nice levels... but some people hate the blandness of the weapon set, the dull monsters and the empasis on dull colors.

I enjoy it when I'm in the right mood, but I don't find it superior to Doom.

I've always read that the NTSC Saturn port of Doom was pretty bad, is the Japanese port better?

I was in the same boat, so I played Wolfenstein 3D a ton, and when I got a better PC, I kind of forgot about Doom!

The Japanese version came out months after the USA version, and the gameplay was improved.

I picked up the SNES version of Doom last week. Played it tonight for the first time and was surprised at how quickly it takes you from the intro screen directly into the game. No options selection or anything, it just puts you there aiming your gun. You can change difficulty by pausing and restarting your game, but is that weird or what?

Edmond Dantes
08-17-2013, 10:43 PM
Yeah, that does sound weird.

Personally I never fussed about console ports of Doom, save for Doom 64 (which is all new levels and is basically a Total Conversion), but I may want to check out the Playstation (or Japanese Saturn) versions because the Happy Video Game Nerd made them sound pretty awesome. Funny... I remember not liking PSX Doom, but well...

Also, don't overlook Doom's erstwhile brothers-in-arms: Heretic and Hexen! (Except for Hexen 64, please overlook that one).

PSX Doom is definitely worth giving another chance. Besides including both Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 it has a bunch of new levels added in. Hexen I always felt was a "love it or hate it" kinda game, it's not terrible but it seems to rely way to much on switch hunting and backtracking to previous levels. I just really suck at Hexen though so that might just be me.

Actually, Hexen 64 is the best port of Hexen available. If you've played the original PC version, it becomes apparent that Hexen 64 is not only the most faithful, but also the most playable port.

As for Doom 64, I'd say it's a bit more than a total conversion, since it upgrades the gameplay with numerous map features and enhanced effects (ie, scripts) not seen in the PC original.

DOOM64 isn't really a conversion, I've finished it and it's 100% unique and nothing at all of what old DOOM was. I remember when that one came out the iD people made a big deal over what Midway/Williams did with it because what they did was take the old 'Doom Bible' that had been written about which had some really nice concepts that never made it into the old game or its sequel. The big set of them would be the super end boss that DOOM64 had and the fact it was nearly impossible to take down unless within all the stages you found these components that create this nasty laser weapon that can fry its ass. There were other little bits added from the bible that came up too but that was the biggie set of things.

DOOM SNES I also have (along with PC Final Doom Collection which had d1+ult doom+d2 and the final doom game wad pairs.) DOOM SNES while fun for awhile it screwy, but it could have been so much more had someone less cheap ass would have handled the work than my old company Midway. They cut some horrible corners on it with the worst being NO Battery, NO Password, and NO configuration changes, ONE of 8 angles of each monster displayed, and of course difficulty change up from starting a game, pausing and restarting which was dumb. Midway wanted to make more money so they cut the battery and cut the ROM size so the storage wouldn't allow for those cuts which was a dick move really. All said though what did survive is a truly fun game albeit a bit creepy as you never know if the enemy sees you or not until they open fire. If you have I think the XBAND or one of those action replay devices you can save your progress which at least makes it doable as playing all 3 episodes in 1 sitting is overkill and it's a shame Nintendo didn't block them for it in testing submission.

I actually just recently got Doom Legacy for the Macintosh/Powermac! It comes with an awesome poster and like 8 floppy disks. It was pretty cool because it came with Chapter IV: Thy Flesh Consumed. A great buy for any Doom fan. :)

I never got what the deal with DOSdoom was... I mean the original Doom was already for DOS, wasn't it? And then there's a sourceport that was based on the Linux version... ported back to DOS... just... what?

I remember Doom was the first game I played on my 486 IBM-PC. I was 5 or 6 years old and it really scared me and I didn't like it. 2 years ago I beat it for the first time in my life. Played the Saturn version which I heard is not good. I enjoyed it very much and I now envy those who played it first hand. GREAT GAME

By the way HAPPY BIRTHDAY

and thank you guys at id software you did a great job

Someone said something about Quake, Quake was more about the MP than the SP. It was the first game that really put MP into the hands of everyone. It sort of started it IMO.

Though, I used to play Doom, Decent 1 & 2, Duke 3d and some others using Kali in DOS...those were the days.

Sweet it hit the big b'day. I've been thinking of adding this to my Nexus 7 tablet I have, but the DoDOOM on there has the shareware release while I have all the WADs of the game and sequels. Anyone familiar with the setup for something like that as that classic is still fun to pull out for some brainless blasting so many years later.

On Virgin America flights over the past maybe 3 or 4 years (or longer, not sure how long) they've had a Doom port that's selectable and then playable using the remote that's wired to each seat. It's the only recognizable title if i recall, and to my knowledge you can still play it!! Definitely made the flights / expensive in-flight beers more enjoyable!!
