Looks like this one's gaining some traction. I wish I could have sold my loose one for what they're going for now...

These prices are crazy.

Not only is this Madden. It is a Genesis sports game!

Speaking of which check out the prices on Mutant League Hockey.

But both Mutant League games are actually, you know. Good.

Even for a rental (Blockbuster?) exclusive?

Even for a rental (Blockbuster?) exclusive?

The DP online guide says it was offered via mail-order or rental only; I have a complete copy with security stickers from an indie video store so I don't think it was exclusive to Blockbuster.

Damn...a coupla months ago, this guy was going for $40 COMPLETE...wonder what made it soar so high?

I actually had a chance to buy a CiB copy a few years ago locally, too...wish I took it up now.

Not Blockbuster exclusive, a rental/mail in exclusive as someone said. Since Blockbuster ruled the rental business, they obviously had most of them. It's far rarer than most Genesis games, as is Mutant League Hockey, though not quite as much as that Madden. As for the price, well you have to factor in the demand, which is high, because of the presumed rarity.

I only remember that because I first heard of the game when EGM responded to a letter asking about the game and saying Blockbuster reported a number of people deciding to keep the game and paying $150(!) in fines.

Championship Edition is an enhanced version of Madden '93 that has a 4 player mode not present in the original and iirc some roster updates. It's not worth 150 bucks imo but it isn't some run of the mill EA Sports title you could find for two bucks at your average flea market.

Geez, even a few years ago this game only commanded max $50 CIB. Are people just slowly going insane?

It must be demand, if it wasn't people wouldn't be paying escalating prices.

There's no 4-player mode. The EA 4 Way Play adapter didn't come out until the following year anyway. The change was that it replaced the 30 1992-93 NFL teams with Super Bowl or championship teams from the previous 25 years. 8 were already included in regular Madden '93, so 38 in total. As a football fan, even though the teams and players were generic city names and just numbers, I thought this was terrific at the time. I believe they kept doing this in future Madden games. I rented this game a few times specifically for that reason, but when '94 came out and it had most of those teams, I never gave 93 CE another thought.

The next Stadium Events, except this version of the game is actually slightly different from the common one.

My bad, I seem to remember reading something about a 4 player mode but that must have been a later game.

Madden 93 CE is an awesome football game for us hardcore old school football nerds. The roster is better than Tecmo Super Bowl. The 92/93 Madden engine is better than any that followed it imo, including newer Madden games. You just can't beat the old school gameplay. For old school video game football gameplay, Genesis is where it's at, and Madden 93 CE is about as good as it gets. I like playing the 70's Vikings against the 70's Raiders and using Alan Page against that Raider O Line with Gene Upshaw & Art Shell. It's a fun challenge for a football video game. I don't think I could ever sell my copy of the game.

I did just notice that the ones going for big bucks are the ones with the box and booklet included. Those are even more rare than the cart(which still goes for around 30-40$) since the video stores just threw them away most of the time.

'94 edition went to 4 players on Genesis, and 5 players on SNES, as did NHL that year.

I would think the more likely reason for the manual to be missing is that the customers lost them (didn't anyone else maybe read the manual once and then stick it back in the rental case?). I thought most stores (definitely Blockbuster) kept the boxes (or cut them to use as rental case cover art), though I do recall seeing a few games at BB that were sold directly in the BB case.
Of course, there's a good possibility of customers purchasing the games after they are retired and then throwing out the box and manual afterwards, not caring about the collectible value.

All the Madden and Bill Walsh games of that era had stinky engines and gameplay mechanics. I hated the hyped three window passing system and how slow and clunky your receivers moved after they caught the ball. For superior football games from that era look nowhere else but to Sega's College Football's National Championship (and II) and NFL '95 games. Those games had speed and smooth gameplay that EA merely dreamed of.
