What is the best way to emulate N64 on the go?

Short of having a portable N64, what's the absolute best method you guys know of for an N64 emulator running on a mobile device?

I've been searching for so long to find a way to play N64 games on a portable device.

What about something like a 3DS XL? Something with built in controls would be pretty nice.

And obviously running other emulators would be essential as well.

I tried PSP; however, N64 is pretty much impossible to run on it.

If you have an android phone or tablet there quite a few emulators available, free and paid for. If the touchscreen controls are hard to get used to, most of them allow you to connect a PS3/Wii/bluetooth controller.

So like a 3DS XL wouldn't be able to handle it? A PSP GO?

I don't know if a 3DS could handle it or not, but it's a moot point since there is no way to run homebrew or emulators on 3DS yet. They've just barely gotten the thing to run ROMS, it may be years if ever before they figure out anything else.

As for PSP, I don't know if there are any N64 emus or not but if so, I doubt they're any good. Even SNES seems to be pushing the system pretty hard. PSX only works because Sony made the system to do that.

You may need to temper your expectations a little bit. It is my understanding that N64 emulation still has a long way to go.

Laptop with decent video (AMD or NVidia) is really the only way.

There are tons of cheap Chinese made Android gaming handhelds made lately, and they are steadily improving over time.

The JXD series seem to be the best right now, and even the cheapest of them, the JXD S602 seems to handle N64 decently, but with slowdown on the more taxing games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rHXj5ly1Mk), while the newest model, the S7300b can handle even the more taxing games at or very near full speed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERNygqgCW7w&t=5m29s).

I think the S602 lacks a true analog stick though, whereas I believe the S7300b has a functional one.

How do these games do in light of the rather horrendous compatibility problems still plaguing many games in PC emulators? I've been playing some lesser known (but still fantastic) N64 games, or trying to. Indy Jones doesn't work on Project64 or 1964, Beetle Adventure Racing! calls for switching video plugins, which turns out to be very badly handled by Project64 which can't be honest about what's loaded, or even that you have certain plugins installed. Are the mobile releases based on mupen64 or something?

If you can afford it, nVidia Shield would flawlessly run Android N64 emulators (based on Mupen64Plus to my best knowledge).

If you cannot, I would suggest Chinese based Android stuff, even if I'm not a big fan of.
