I think the version of the Game Boy Tetris, build v1.0, may have been released here (in the USA) as well, and I might know why...

Pictures for convenience. Both pictures are from eBay auctions.

If the catalog # on the label reads "DMG-TR-USA" and has "MADE IN JAPAN" on the bottom center of the cart label (instead of sharing the lefthand silver part of the label with the catalog #), then it is V1.0 with the alternate "A TYPE" music, called "Minuet."

However, if the words "MADE IN JAPAN" share that same lefthand silver portion of the label with the catalog # (instead of on the bottom center of the label), then it is the common V1.1 build with the "A TYPE" music being the "Korobeiniki" song.

The catalog "DMG-TR-USA-1" (with the "enhanced" artwork) is the "Players' Choice" version from the later '90s.

EDIT, 9:35 AM PDT - I also want to know whether or not the USA versions of the GB Tetris have the "23" or "23A" hard stamps on the label (like the Japanese "DMG-TRA" versions)?

explain this better?

if your game has the number on the left and made in japan on the bottom it is v1.0 and has different music?

EDIT:

I just looked this up for the music difference. My GB copy is as you say for 1.0 but it most certainly doesn't have the 1.0 song. copy came originally with my GB whenever we bought it way back when.

That is what I am trying to find out as well.

The GB was initially released here on July 31, 1989.

Again, now I'd like to see whether or not the hard stamp on the label, if ever there were one, read "05," "22" or "23" (no final "A")?
