PS2 Shipments Reach 40 Million

(SCEI announces that its PlayStation 2 console is as popular as ever, and has just achieved another landmark shipments figure.)

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc has today announced that cumulative worldwide shipments of the PS2 game console had reached 40 million units--only four and a half months after the figure of 30 million units was announced.
The breakdown of shipments by region as of September 17, 2002 is as follows:

North America - 17.01 million units
Europe / PAL - 12.06 million units
Japan - 10.97 million units

“The PlayStation 2 user base across Europe, Africa, Middle East Australia and New Zealand continues to accelerate and to grow the market for computer entertainment on TV based consoles,” said Chris Deering, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “The recent and forthcoming line-up of new software titles on PlayStation 2 is the strongest in our history. Reviews have been outstanding, and the range of choice between now and Christmas is just awesome.”

The number of PS2 consoles in Europe is sure to increase as the platform approaches its third Christmas. Not only has SCEE recently announced a price cut for the console, but SCEE's own pre-Christmas software line-up includes the likes of The Getaway, World Rally Championship 2 Extreme, Tekken 4, Ratchet & Clank, and Kingdom Hearts.

Xbox is doing better than I thought... or vice-versa, Gamecube is worse than I thought. I always figured Microsoft's machine would barely make a blip, but I'm surprised to see Nintendo's console doing so poorly. I wonder if Nintendo will go the same destination as former gaming giant Atari?

I think that both of those systems will pick up some serious ground this holiday season. The games I'm most looking forward to are on either GameCube or Xbox (with the exception of GTA Vice City and Shinobi).

Little known fact here.

Nintendo made more money with the N64 than Sony made with the PS1. Now that was of last year and if Sony continues to make some cash on the PS1 that might change.

In business that is the bottom line. Making the most money. Nintendo has 1st party software power and no one sees them taking a bow anytime in the near future.

The game cube titles that everyone was waiting for are finally arriving. Mario ,Zelda, Metroid , RE and the RPGs are just around the corner. Will it surpass the PS2? As far as sales of hardware no way but its just getting started. Don't expect that gap to get any bigger than it has.
