I'd add Blazing Lasers, Splatterhouse, Galaga'90 to the list, so many good games. Damn! I was going to add Neutopia and Neutopia 2, but they've gone up in price in the recent years. Blarf!!!

You know, the Japanese PC Engine games are often cheaper than their US TG16 counterparts, and some can be played without much knowledge of Japanese. But the turbochips/HuCards are region-locked, so you'd have to purchase a Japanese PC Engine (which can be cheap), or an adaptor (which are crazy expensive!). Also, as far as I know, CDs are not region locked and can be played on any US/JP system :)

No regional locks on the CD's. Very good stuff. I personally liked Tiger Road, Sidearms, and the original BONK. Bomberman is always fun, especially if you can get four players together. Dungeon Explorer is a blast too. The games thus far named before are great too.

Hucard
Bonks Adventure
Dragon's Curse
Ninja Spirit
Parasole Stars
Galaga 90
Dungeon Explorer

CD
Monster Lair
Valis III
Ys Book 1&2
Prince of Persia
Exile

Though hucards are region locked, that can be bypassed through a converter or having a region switch put in.

Gradius II
Super Raiden
Forgotten Worlds
Rainbow Islands

These 4 are great on the system, though Rainbow Islands prices can sometimes get downright scary.

Oh, um, if I may, can I ask about whats a game where a boy is running around inside a frame at a time with a bunch of cutesy things walking about, and when he beats a level and boss he gets sugary treats and other snack things as a reward? It looked like a action puzzle game, but I couldnt understand what the object of each frame hes in to get to the next. It had really good colorful graphics.

I don't know what you consider to be "break the bank".

I recommend picking up Military Madness and Alien Crush. Both titles can be purchased off of ebay for under $40.

You might want to buy a coregrafx and have access to PC engine stuff. Some North American stuff that is rare is common for PCE (eg Bonk 3)

TurboGrafx is a really good game system, many good games on it.

If you are happy to open your console and do some basic soldering work it is easy enough to make it region free too.

CDs are region free to an extent. There are 5 System Cards and those are region coded, we only got 2 of them. Altered Beast has a bug that prevents it from running on bios 2.0 or late, the 1.0 card was JP only, as are the Arcade Card and Games Express card, though the latter is only relevant if you really like anime strip poker type stuff. I'd get a Japanese duo before playing cd games, most of the good ones require a 3.0 card which is worth about as much as cd unit unless you go the JP route and the first model CD units have a gear that swells until it jams or breaks.

i dont have a CD nor do I plan to get one. I also don't have a booster so saving games is out.

breaking the bank for me right now is anything over $20 bucks

Finding a turbo-cd can be tricky let alone one that works.Still there are plenty of good games for it on CD.Track down a pce-duo,duo-r or duo-rx that's the best way to play CD titles.

Bloody Wolf isn't too expensive, it's a run and gun game kinda like Contra. I'm surprised no one mentioned it.

If you don't want to spend over $20 for games and are never going to get a CD system or anything that can play import games, then your potential library is quite small. The TG16 is a great console, but it's one of the most expensive classic consoles there is, and most of the better games either require addons (CD system, etc.) or at minimum cost more than that. You will find some decent cheaper US-released titles, such as Blazing Lazers, R-Type, Legendary Axe, Keith Courage, World Court Tennis, Moto Roader, Victory Run, Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge, Alien Crush, Dungeon Explorer, Final Lap Twin, Cyber-Core, Dragon Spirit, and some others, but you'll eventually have to pay the money for the addons to get the most out of the system. Start with stuff like those games, though... there's enough there to last a decent while.

As black falcon mention you are missing out then while there's a good deal on hucards. There's allot more on CD and not every game for it is expensive either,if you stick to japanese release.

My only other advice look into having the TG16 region modded at least. So that will expand you're choices in playing to what's available. The other reason being, some japanese version of hucard titles can be cheaper then the u.s versions.

TG 16 stuff is kind of expensive but in a good way. Look at bonks adventure. Yeah you can say 30-60 bucks is a lot for it. Or you can get a NES and pay 300-700 on the same thing. The best way to find cheap games is hit lowest price first on ebay and get ready to sort through a lot of tv sports games. In the big picture as a collector i have learned to set money aside for games and play what i have, while i cant afford that A+ title. If you wanna really feel broke just buy a jaguar and an origional neo geo. I have a jaguar and the three not so good games games because i cant afford any others right now. And you might as well look at good/rare neo geo games as cheap cars.

I havent played it yet and look to get the tg 16 version. Is there any reading other than title screen. I am not against other languages just i wanna know what the story is without a language dictionary taking me out of the feel of the game.

I can't speak for the NES/Famicom version, but the TG-16 had a bit of text at the end of the game- nothing heavy, though.

An absolutely awesome machine with very faithful renditions of arcade games.

I'd say go for:
- R-Type
- Side Arms
- Bomberman
- Ninja Spirit
- Samurai Ghost
- Blazing Lazers
- Dead Moon

TG-16 is in my list of top favourite three systems of all time (ColecoVision, TG-16, Dreamcast).

Really, no mention of Neutopia? Neutopia 2 is pretty expensive, but last I looked the first one was pretty cheap for a Zelda-style game.

TG16 version can be pricey at auction but the PCE version is cheaper in price.

I personally recommend any of the following;

Dragon Spirit
Splatterhouse (little spendy)
Any of the Bonk games--fun platformers
Sinistron--bad ass shoot 'em up

Many of the games suggested so far aren't within your budget or are only on PC Engine and the games suggested to be outside your budget are actually quite cheap. :P

Here are some worthwhile TurboGrafx-16 HuCard games which don't require saving and can be found for around <$20:

Military Madness
Alien Crush
Devils Crush
Aeroblasters
Bloody Wolf
Ninja Spirit
BlaZing LaZers
R-Type
Psychosis
Sinistron
Sidearms
Neutopia
Final Lap Twin
Dungeon Explorer
Double Dungeons
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge
Galaga '90
Pac Land
Cyber Core
Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe II
Cadash
Bomberman
Dragon's Curse
