Do most people throw out their game boxes? I have noticed that at stores like Gamestop there are tons of games in generic boxes. Worse, I have seen several Gamestop stores that have thrown out all of their remaining GC and PS2 boxes and have also disposed of all used 3DS, DS, and now cheap 360 game boxes. However, even before Gamestop made this problem worse I have noticed that many people in general seem to either lose or throw out their game boxes. It seems like once a game is a few years old it becomes harder to find a complete copy in good condition. It gets worse when you go back to prior generations (like PSX), where some Amazon listings have nothing but disc only copies besides one or two overpriced ones that are complete.

I also visited a local Gamestop that had a stack of used Call of Duty Modern Warefare 2 and Black Ops games for the Xbox 360 (it looked to be ten or more) in a bargain bin and every single one of them was in a generic Gamestop case. Before you say that this only casual gamers who do this, I noticed that many RPG games were disc only in generic cases at the same location.

I think the game stores often throw out the cases themselves just to save floor space. It sucks. Other times people will lose games when they let friends borrow them and stuff so discs get separated from their cases forever. There's also people who like to keep their games, music and movies in one big CD wallet. Some moms make their kids throw out their hard cases to save room. People just don't seem to realize people will pay more money for something that is complete than just a game itself.

Personally I don't mind disc only if I am only trying out a random game I never heard of for the first time and want to get it cheap, or if I want extra copies of good games to share.

When I was a kid, I used to throw away my NES and SNES boxes. I simply didn't have the room in my parents house to keep them all and I needed the extra space by having cartridge only games.

I was much better with the PS1 era; I kept all of my cases, but they had to go on the top shelf of the closet because the games were in a CD wallet to conserve space. I didn't have a big room like I do now. I did the same thing with the PS2 until I moved out of my parents house at 18. Once I had an entire apartment to myself, I could dedicate shelves to my games and I put everything back in the cases that I did have.

Be sure to ask employees. I asked about DS games and they had a ton of boxes in the back.
