I thought this was unreleased (and why IIRC Romero himself released the ROMs a few years ago), though it would seem it was in Europe?
Was it released in Japan as well as a Nintendo Power-exclusive? (GameFAQs lists it as canceled)
I noticed as I was browsing Nintendo's old NP page (http://web.archive.org/web/20061010202021/http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n03/gb/npnew/index.html) to download all the manuals, it was dated for a May 1, 2001 release (I believe 平成1年 = 1989). Would seem strange for them to go to the trouble of listing it, write up a PDF manual, and then not release what pretty much amounts to a digital release.

From what I've read the release in the US was canceled late enough that there were NTSC copies with labels printed ready to send to Best Buy, EB etc. Never played it myself but I've seen many youtube videos that have me intrigued

It was my understanding that Romero's posting of the ROM a couple of years ago was the first that the Internet had seen of it.
