Mario & Wario is one of the few games that uses the SNES mouse accessory. Unfortunately, it was only released in Japan, despite the entire game having English text. It was also featured a couple of times in the Nintendo Power preview section. I won an auction for a Canadian Kellogg's cereal box last year which had a mockup of the US box for Mario & Wario, which I have put up on my website. I still have no sure reason as to why it was cancelled, but my guess is that they didn't want to market another game that used the SNES mouse (which was also likely why the mysterious Sound Fantasy never came out).

That's really neat! Thanks for sharing this with the retro gaming community. I always wondered why this game didn't come out for the US SNES... It actually seemed kinda cool. This game reminds me of Lemmings, kinda, but with Mario. :)

Interesting. The game is great. I'd recommend it to anyone who's into puzzlers, and it can be had for very little scratch.

I'm sure that some of the folks on the cover project will be excited to see this, and possibly recreate the artwork (creepy as it may be).

You'd think it would be ideal for a revival of some sort on the Wii or DS, but I guess that's what Mario vs Donkey Kong is, more or less.

I'm pretty sure some have already a stab at the box art over there (CoverProject):

This is one of the few SFC games I've wanted to pick up for awhile. Such a fun puzzler.

Oddly, the game is referenced in Pokemon R/B/Y, even in the US versions.

There are a couple Japanese guide books which outline and detail the fastest routes through the stages. Really awesome how quickly the tops players can clear the stages.
